@NRoG55 Which version of windows is it? Also do you repair the windows mbr? If this is happening it could be booting off the grub aka uninstalling it. You can also try Acronis OS Selector, not cheap but im sure with a torrent you can download and isntall it. It would install into windows and stoping windows from takeing over...
GRUB2 is freakin' horrible. It's the only thing I've hated thus far about Ubuntu. At least the Windows loader doesn't wig out, break, and not launch the computer every time you install a new OS.
total crash didnt know what happened registered a grub error scrapped the entire os for an updated version 11.04 was on 10.04 but no real damage since i back nearly everything up
I dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu Meerkat, when first installing the grub 2,it didn't come with the os-prober, I had to install it, which was easy enough. then I found a neat little package to customize grub 2, It's called " Grub Customizer 2.1.2 ". I know it's not the "way of linix", but I'm a windows user as well, so neat little programs are in my blood.
What's the difference between gksu and sudo, and how do you know when to use which? Also, for us real novices, can you demonstrate how to change the boot order of the OS? (When I open the file that you open, I don't see anything that seems to identify either of them!)
ubuntu 11.04 vista service pack idk..... trying to dual boot. when grub pulls up my monitor informs me that it cannot display the resolution. I have tried manually resetting the resolution via another youtube video that i found... for some reason it would not save the changes it kept saying that the /root directory was not present..... on that note no matter how many times i try and become the superuser/root user it wont let me, i get an authentication error. help please.
i got one i was using 10.10 and the grub crashed completely but something called busybox took over didnt posses the the technical knowledge to make it work it was terrible but i do back up everything so not a total loss and it pushed me forward into trying out 11.04 which i had planned on anyway which i actually happen to like better anyway it was terrible but i ended on top like always.
That tutorial voice reminds me of flight attendants whispering: "Ladies and Gentlemen, we are about to land. Please fasten your seatbelts. I will come over to you and give you a blowjob before we enter the runway."
I dual boot ubuntu 10.04 and windows vista. I reinstalled windows vista and was pissed off to find out that ubuntu is no longer there. How do fix this problem what do I do? How do I make grub reapear so I can boot Ubuntu again cause I have data on Ubuntu. This is frustrating. I put in the live cd and do all of these steps but when I use "sudo update-grub" it says error cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). Also what do I do after the last step when window pops up to fix the problem. Thx
@PiercingKnight You're not following her instructions correctly. The instructions are different when you're doing this from a live CD... "Recover grub2 ubuntu" and click the second link. Follow the instructions there for using the live CD to restore grub.
i installed new ubuntu 10.10 and installed every thing that i know..but then while i was in the middle of installing natilus elementry my pc get restarted while the installation was in progress...and now when i boot from my ubuntu it does not loads..????can u please tell me what happened..??
when i load a black screen appears(just like a terminal) and there is written (grub>)..???can u plz plz plz help me..??????
Install GRUB 2 from LIVE CD, in Terminal type: 1) sudo fdisk -l Look to find where linux is 2) sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt ^sdaX is the # figured out in step 1 3) sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda Type 'exit' and reboot (into hard-drive, not cd). Once in your system, type: 4) sudo update-grub When using "fdisk -l" (L) check that your linux is marked as boot. If not marked as bootable: sudo fdisk /dev/sda And use fdisk commands to flag partition. Press "m" to see help (p,a,#,p,w)
When using "fdisk -l" (Lowercase L) check that your linux is marked as bootable. If not marked as bootable: sudo fdisk /dev/sda (and use fdisk commands to flag that partition as boot).
I detest GRUB2. It should never have been released imo. Why introduce something that is more complicated and hassle than the previous version. GRUB2 can't even detect my Gentoo partition. I would suggest you uninstall GRUB2, install GRUB legacy, and block it in synamptic from future updates. All your problems wil go away! Cheers
I have vista on my laptop. used mint 10 live to install on to a usb drive from the live dvd. When i was done it would not let me boot to my hard drive without the thumb drive in and booting to the hdd first which then brought up the boot loader. I have finally been able to fix it with alot of work. can you do a video on this and maybe show us an easy way to fix this if it happens and what is the best way to make a linux usb. Try mint you will like the taste. LOL!!!!
After two days of searching the ubuntu forums and other forums i found your video and finally got it to work perfectly like i wanted it to work! THANKS!
I'm not a total Linux noob but I still don't quite understand grub. At some point I will have to reinstall Windows as I need it to run some proprietary software. Whats stopping me from doing this that it will overwrite my grub settings/bootloader. I'm still not sure how to fix this if I can't log back into my Linux distribution to update grub via the terminal. I should be asking this in an Ubuntu forum or something but just thought I would pose the question here. Any advice would be appreciated.
@Th3Alchemist It was not the grub.cfg, it was /etc/default/grub (which is a file without extension), and yeah you can't edit the grub.cfg, only the one she did.
how do you make windows 7 at the top of the list on gub2. not just make it the first select it at the bottom cause thats how ive mess up grub many of times.
Had to install XP for a friend and forgot to unplug the other hard drive containing Ununtu 9.10. Windows of course wrote through the boot flag and damaged grub. I tried to reinstall it using a root shell on the live CD and it couldn't manage to find the directory and I know I typed it right. We wound up installing 10.04 but now he can't get to his old home directory which is in the lost & found folder now. Any suggestions?

I just came from posting to a some guy who is making videos to show people that what u show in your videos isn't exact so i decided to post in here some ideas:
Try to choose better the titles u use for your videos
And try to explain every video in a more bottom-up easy and full explained way so everybody can understand what and how!
Besides I'am a fun of your videos "vous êtes très charmante!". Bye
Your voice in the actual tutorial....hmmmm geek porn! you sound soooo sexy! I'm getting a "hard drive" over here.....I'm about to dump my files ,and reboot for another session lol!
I see a lot of complaints about Grub 2 and I had some problems myself. I don't think it is really a problem with Grub 2 but some of the warnings it gives you.
@keljaden321 My point exactly, if you're using a noob-friendly distro, why not get Linux Mint and save yourself all the trouble? Check it out, folks! :)
@Cubix85 Me either, i ended up reinstalling again. I guess if you have a dual boot with windows you can fix the mbr and it'll boot into ubuntu again. apparently there are more commands you can try from the ubuntu forum help, i lost the link now
I tried using the Lucid Lynx Live install CD and alternate install CD to rescue a system Windows 7 killed. The grub 2 installer just didn't want to know. No matter what I did it just refused point blank to install. So I just broke out the sledge hammer and reinstalled the whole Ubuntu Linux OS.
The great thing about Linux is you can keep your data and settings totally separate from the OS. So no settings or data was lost.
Ubunu 9.10 Karmic was when Ubuntu first started using Grub2. I couldn't make out from your video. But it appears you where attempting to edit the grub.cfg file. This is big no no. You should only edit the /etc/grub.d/ files which will update the grub.cfg file one sudo update-grub.
i have a windows 7 license (msdn) which i would install and use occasioanlly, but my main fear is GRUB. hopefully i should be able to restore it from live cd. ps i also am still running never updated 9.10 because last time i updated it mashed GRUB
Sorry for the off topic comment. I cannot view this video since I am at work and work computers do not have flash player. Last night I saw your kdenlive introduction, and was very impressed by the sound quality. It was certainly not a lapel mic (your outfit could not have hidden it), although it sounded as if you were very close to the mic. I could not find any information on your website either.
WOW dude I can't believe you would actually post something like this. Why would you post a command that will erase your entire Ubuntu/Linux Harddrive/Patition. Shame on you dude. You are a prime example of why this world is so fucked up. Thanks. And I can't wait for a your Nasty reply in 3 2 ...
Oh yes...I had a lot of "fun" trying to edit the grub files...
When I got my new motherboard (a cheapie), Linux kept crashing so I to figure out that ACPI was screwing up, so had to hack /etc/default/grub just to turn the darn thing off. It works only now I have to turn the PC off by hand after doing Shutdown.
And right now I'm trying to remember how to have grub only show me "one" kernel to boot from rather than a buttload of old ones that Update Manager won't remove.
@NixiePixel i dont what to do in the grub menu. the problem I have is that installed ubuntu on my pc but with the dual boot option, and windows doesnt start when i choose in the startup
I had an old, unreliable computer that would often not work, and would require many hard resets. Eventually, after too many, I'd get a grub error, and now knowing how to fix grub errors that won't allow me to boot, and not bothering to boot to a live CD and google it, I'd have to re-install Ubuntu every 2 days on that machine. I've since fixed the hardware problems that were causing the unreliability.
Dear Mlle Pixel, known this way for about 2 years and it's a great way to rearrange the grub menu. I'm however having some problems, my linux splash screen is x8 out of my screen range.
@awelillow you need to run sudo update-burg after installing. To select which theme you want to use, hit the 't' key when you boot into Burg for the first time, or after installing and running the burg-emu package
@NVSBLmonstr Hey tnks for the reply, i have done all that, and even more, i have followed plenty of tutorials and also troubleshoting guides but nothing have made the job,
I just saw that burg-manager came out, ill give it a try, hope it helps
(maybe it has something to do with me installing it from tilda instead of terminal) :P
Anyways it would be better to see nixie doing it step by step:P

Nixie, do you do Kubuntu as well as Ubuntu? I know the differences are Gnome vs KDE, but I'm having trouble logging into Kubuntu after it updated via my acceptance of the auto updater, to the new Kubuntu 10.4.01 from 9.10. For whatever reason, it says my original password is incorrect and I can never get out of the login screen. I'm a Mac guy, so please be gentle with me. :)
Actually it's not that dangerous to edit the menu.cfg file because you can always use the command line feature of grub if your OS won't boot and add new boot command and boot the OS.
I thinks that a useful tutorial for Fedora users is "how to config or just kill SeLinux".
I actually started disliking Ubuntu because it is trying to be to user friendly and in a way starting to remind me of windows and it's starting to loose the old Linux magic so that's why a person needs to install Gentoo :P
Down with Sexit pigs in other words women haters!! now let us enjoy this incredibly gorgeous woman as she explains and simplifies the latest gadgets!!
OMG! You did read my email! <3 you nixie ^_^ GL with the logitech comp!! This finally reminded me to clean up my GRUB, I was going to after that and then thought "No I'm not, I'm currently on windows and don't feel like rebooting." hehe.
Can't wait for Natty Narwhal! I'll be changing my login sound to narwhals for sure
---------
And yes... I didn't mod my GRUB forever and decided not to update ubuntu instead... -.- *sigh* Shell script time! hehe
I encourage people to install BURG anyway. Much nicer and has a semi GUI to help modify things (like hiding the 50 different kernels I have installed)
I love you and your box!!! :) although i usually have NO idea what your talking about... I watch your videos because your HOT!!! :) hey at least im honest...
Thank you for now whoring out your sexuality in this video and just getting to the topic. Long have I grown to like your videos until you started wearing clothes to get more attention. While I understand that getting more attention earns more views, I think you have more to offer than just great looks.
@baronsengir187 Because I admired her for her brains and it seems like she was selling out is all. Seems like some girls these days feel like they have to almost go topless to get noticed and I think that's sad.
I get a black screen of death that says "Error: out of disk" The only way I can boot is from a super grub disk. I can't even recover my install with the live cd. I have rewritten the entire grub file, uninstalled grub and reinstalled it. I think I will have to format the drive and reinstall the whole OS. Lucid is a complete failure. You can have flaws but if you can't even boot the OS? "Epic fail!" and I hate the word epic.
To end boot problems once and for all. Do this... Install Vista or Win7 first. Then when you install Ubuntu, in the last step, before actually beginning copying files, there's an "advanced" option. There, you tell the installer to install GRUB 2 on the same partition where you'll install "/". Then, when you finish, Vista or 7, will not recognise GRUB 2, that's fine. Boot Win, download and install the program EasyBCD, and then you can edit your Win bootloader and that's it :)
sweet cat :))

There is now a little tool to reinstall GRUB in 1 clic : "Boot-Repair".
It can be installed on any Ubuntu session (live or not) 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04.
There is also a Ubuntu CD that has Boot-repair preinstalled : Ubuntu Secured CD. Very convenient ! :)

For LIVE CD for Grub2 (Ubuntu/Mint 10,etc)...boot it. In Terminal:
1) sudo fdisk -l
Look to find where linux is (sda1,sda2,...)
2) sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
^make sure for sdaX it's the # figured out in step 1
3) sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda
Done! Reboot. Then: sudo update-grub
When using "fdisk -l" (Lowercase L) check that your linux is marked as bootable. If not marked as bootable: sudo fdisk /dev/sda (and use fdisk commands to flag that partition as boot).

What microphone do you use?
Sorry for the off topic comment. I cannot view this video since I am at work and work computers do not have flash player. Last night I saw your kdenlive introduction, and was very impressed by the sound quality. It was certainly not a lapel mic (your outfit could not have hidden it), although it sounded as if you were very close to the mic. I could not find any information on your website either.

Like I Said,Grub = fun

I had an old, unreliable computer that would often not work, and would require many hard resets. Eventually, after too many, I'd get a grub error, and now knowing how to fix grub errors that won't allow me to boot, and not bothering to boot to a live CD and google it, I'd have to re-install Ubuntu every 2 days on that machine. I've since fixed the hardware problems that were causing the unreliability.

Hey nixie, i have been having problems installing Burg, have you used it?
do u have any idea on how to set it up?
i havent been able to make it work... what about a video about it? =D
take care, ur gorgeous in a very healthy way xD
awelillow 1 year ago
@awelillow you need to run sudo update-burg after installing. To select which theme you want to use, hit the 't' key when you boot into Burg for the first time, or after installing and running the burg-emu package
NVSBLmonstr 1 year ago
