  • This is truly one of the most immersive games I have ever played. I have found only one problem with it. Under XP the character can no longer run in water and slows to a crawl forcing me to use the jump control to move him forwards. Never found a work around for it. This is one of those games that should be updated and re-released for use on todays computers. A true classic.

  • @DumblyBrilliant it's on GOG.com and it works perfectly.

  • @Ehal256 thanks I will check that out

  • @DumblyBrilliant you're very welcome, have fun :)

  • hi!

i guess you run the game under XP with a virtual machine, right?

Could you upload your .vhd file? I can't get the game to run!

    :(((

  • You need to buy one - the Twon-Ha guy will give you a sweat rag and that will make the Twon-Ha he sells you trust you.

  • How do you ride the TwonHa ?

  • Another thing I like is that twice i saw a Twon-Ha stopping an NPC moving where he wanted and the Twon-Ha guy turning up to lead the offending Twon-Ha out of the way - therefore keeping you immersed in the game! Why are great ideas ignored and crappy ideas copied in modern games?!

  • What I like about Outcast and older games in general is the little details they do not bother with now. Like the head guy scratching his chin before 'remembering' the data to enter to open the first Daoka. Also the way he lights his pipe, also the way you can see footprints in the snow as you walk, it all adds to immersion!

  • You might be right about that this was the first game I could truly immerse myself in.

    Very good attention to detail.

More modern big attempt to be immersive games like Tes: Oblivion are good but everything looks so stale.......

  • THE best game I've ever played, close to Jet Force Gemini

  • This game looks incredible for a 99 release. The music is awesome too.

  • I got this working in XP (at least the rice field and Twon-Ha problem) by using a laptop battery saver program called SpeedswitchXP! By choosing the 'maximum battery' option in the taskbar menu, my dual 2.8ghz CPU's became 1ghz CPU's. I then switched off one CPU, leaving me with a 1ghz PC that ran the game fine, full screen at high res!

  • You can also try to go to the task manager, go to aplications, right-click on the oucast.exe file, select "afinity" and disable one the 2 cores in the CPU. I havent tried it with this game but I did with System Shock 2 and it works!

  • Could you please tell me if you experienced any unusual slowdown while trying to walk in the swamps ? cause for me everything just goes fine but i can't play the game properly because of that, and when i say "slowdown" i REALLY mean it, Cutter moves at a speed like 0.00001 mph lol. Can anyone help me here plz ?

  • See my post above for SpeedswitchXP. If you still have the slow walk (and probably no twon-ha riding too!) then also get a free program called cpu grabber and set it to anywhere between 30 and 70 AS WELL as using the SpeedswitchXP program. At some point you may find you get 'audio track error' messages which will mean no music when playing, this is solved by 'fine tuning' the cpu grabber. Once you find the right choice for your PC it will work at that thereafter.

  • Thx a lot John. Your advice led me to google some stuff, which taught me in simply reducing my laptop's clock by setting performances parameters to economy. But one last thing, that was not covered by the technical talks here, are you guys able to play in fullscreen ? cause on my machine, it renders the game in the center of the screen, with large black corners around, as if it was a scaled-down resolution. The problem persists no matter what i do, in vista or outcast graphical settings itself.

  • there is a 640x480 patch that will give you a bigger box with a much smaller border, just google infogrames Outcast 640 patch. It's a win98 program, so you have to go into OC1, OC2 and OC3.exe's an choose win98 compatibility for them for the 640 patch to work.

  • gryzorx make sure you unmark the 'Framed' option in the settings if you haven't already.

  • Hey thanks mate, in fact it's been a while i solved this issue, simply by scaling down my laptop's performance settings to the lowest degree possible, everytime i play the game. That way the Twon Ha bug goes away, and i was able to go through the rest of this anthologic game once again after precisely 10 years :) i gotta say it was quite an experience after all that time, while it certainly doesn't make me feel young at all ^^ but still, thanks for the help anyway, appreciated.

  • Sorry, just noticed it's from a year ago ;D

I'll try the same thing you done. I would love to ride the twon-ha around, thanks for the kind responce :)

  • Outcast was one of my best and most intensive action adventure experiences on PC ever. This game is outstanding!

  • Out of all the years of playing this game when I was little I only just realised that when you go near the local talan it almost sounds like they're saying 'The Gay Lord' O_O LOL Amazing game... and for 'YourBoyMc'... It was only one tiny thing from a very BIG game... and it's a twon-ha not a damn dinosaur >=P

  • This game seems to be a hell to run on modern PCs :/

Just a piece of advice if you're going to play this game on modern CPU : save VERY often.

I just got one save screwed because of a stupid glitch, at the beginning of the game (and yes, I used CPU Grabber and stuff, afterwards. It seems the save itself was wrong)

  • I would have loved to play this game, but just didn't have the time; too much dialogue and plot to follow.

  • One of the best games ever. Definately. I just love this game, you can tell if you look at my nickname :D

  • Wow, I remeber when I played whith it. The best script. The best sound and definitly the best game in the history for pc. I love it, but don´t run in windows xp :(

    Greetings from Spain.

  • It runs in Windows XP just fine if you install the latest patch. I even managed to make the 640x480 resolution patch that was made for Windows 98 work so I can play it fullscreen at extra high res. (Win98 compatability mode is needed for oc1.exe, oc2.exe and oc3.exe) the only problem is that new computers are so fast that it causes bugs with riding twon-ha and walking through the riss-fields... :-(

  • You're without doubt, the stupidest retard I've ever seen on the internet. For one the Playstation came out in 1995 and proceeded to dominate the 90's. I love the SNES and N64 but really, think before you post.

  • I agree with Kafkaatheshore. You really need to calm down and take your anger out of something else...

  • Hahahahaha.

  • Never got it to work right on my XP, but it plays fine in the MicroSoft Virtual PC with Win98SE. Had the famous Twon-Ha no-move bug, but solved that by using a utility to slow down the CPU. Still the best game ever made.

  • Good old days... I wish Outcast 2 came out, but we all know that's impossible... =( Oh btw. Who was YOUR favourite character and which was YOUR favourite world??? My favourite Talan definitely was Mogi. :) As for favourite world... hmm I felt at home in each of them, but if I really have to choose (okay I still can't choose...) it's Talanzaar or Okasankaar. =)

  • my all time favorite game, too.

I bought a used pentium-2 at eBay for some bucks to be able to play this game again (still with the latest ~12MB patch, which resolves some problems that were even there on the PCs it was made for)

  • Still the best game I've EVER played. I got chills and my heart raced just hearing the music and seeing the graphics. Best AI and sound effects of any game ever.

  • man i love this game...its legendery

  • Wow, I LOVE this game, thank you for posting this! It made my day, I could play this for weeks! Pray they decide to continue with Outcast 2!

  • Outcast is the best fucking game ever!

  • Ah man, this is still my favorite game ever.

I really played this game to death, it's got beautiful huge worlds and so much to do. You could play this game for hours and still only finish half of all the quests.

I still remember seeing some outcast 2 pictures, looked great. I was so disappointed when I heard it got cancelled.

  • me too ,everybody is always hyping al these other games ,not knowning that this game is basicly the best game ever made. From the Gfx ,that were (revolutionary for that time) to the voice actign and the smooth transition from gaming tot talking to people. It's still my favorite game of all time ,too bad it doesnt play well in windows XP (the twon-ha wont run ,but besides that it's basicly ok with the patch :) but anywayz )

  • For some reason I can't install this game, the installer crashes :(

  • yes, the installer has a bug. download the official patch which solves this

  • Where can I find the patch?? I really want to play this again ;D

  • i could send it to you^^ outcast is the best shit ever

  • That would be awesome! I'll send you a message ^_^

  • damn right jbaurand, THATS what i call a perfect Action Adventure!

  • I wish I could see outcast 2....

(it was a bad decision mr Bonnel...)
