  • (Continued from previous.) The homesteader? He has tried to do things right (planting seed potatoes by the dark of the moon), but then lost the crop to early snow. Discouraged, he dreads facing the planting season again in the spring. Tonight (on the SEVENTH night in a row that the owl hoots – a folk belief) he will leave his downtrodden sodbusting earthly existence and go riding with the woman/girl and Wildfire.

  • Discouraged homesteader eagerly anticipates imminent death and meeting a legendary ghostly woman known to descend Yellow Mountain to the farmlands below during blizzards (whirlwinds) riding the pony Wildfire. Pony, not horse, suggests girl, not woman. Speculating wildly, the girl, out trying to save her crop from the killing frost (clear night), was overtaken by sudden blizzard. Called to Wildfire. He busted out, dies beside her dying body, and the two ghosts ride off. (continued)

  • I had a magic like horse when I was 9-10-11 years old. He was named Rebel. He and the other sweet horses were my sanctuary and love then. I miss them. I used to ride them along the train tracks and sing to them, this is one of the songs that I would sing to them along with Sunshine on my shoulders.

  • @whatsyourtubething1 You were one LUCKY kid to have had that experience, the horses must have loved it as well as must have loved singing to them.Take care.

  • @whatsyourtubething1 I miss my old mare, Bonnie, that I had back then, too. She wasn't magic, but we had a lot of good miles singing those songs, though!

  • May 1975, "Wildfire" reached No. 1 on the Radio and Records charts and No. 1 on all Adult Contemporary Charts, giving Murphey a new level of commercial success and exposure. It sold over one million copies, The song's success was the unique harmonies supplied by Jeff Hanna and Jimmy Ibbotson NGDB..beautiful piano introduction and ending coda, based on Prelude in D-flat, Op. 11 No. 15 by the Russian classical composer Alexander Scriabin, and played by master jazz pianist Jac Murphy.
