Great technique....you remind me allot of the bass player in Level 42 ...saw them live a couple of times but can't remember his name.I guess because im a guitar player i don't follow bass as much as i should;

When i was a kid i listened to allot of Brothers Johnson and Average white band.as well as Sly and the family stone.You have very nice tone with just the right anount of mid's!!

Was this thumb strumming pretty common in funky bass, for example, in the 70's?

I've tried it a bit, but something tells me the top part of my thumb is going to pay sorely with a blister if I don't do it regularly. Did you have to build up a callous on the top of your thumb for the upstroke?
