I was able to go on board the HMNZS Caterbury back in 2001 while it was docked it New Plymouth. It was the first and only time I was able to board an RNZ Navy Ship.
A sad site.I had the honour & privelidge of serving on HMNZS Southland & HMNZS Wellington alongside HMNZS Canterbury.I remember sea survival training on HMNZS Otago & The Lachlan was a refit barge.I agree with litmann 03.May she rest in peace.Fond Memories. But yes at least shes laid to rest in New Zealand waters.
@paladiumdj yes iknow what you mean i too served but that was on a type 12 the Taranaki but my eldest daughter served on her during the decommissioning cruise now that would have been a trip to remember
all of the NZ leander class had a known weak structure crack just forward if the bridge running down both port &stbd sides, they had to be retired, it would have gone to Taiwan for scrap made into cars, so at least it is preserved in NZ Waters..
All very well, but it would have been nice to keep the ship in service, say as a training frigate, for a while longer, even in a static role tied up alongside. Preservation? Don't be daft. This is New Zealand! These days NZ has more frigates sunk around its shores for the amusement of divers than it has in service. That ought to bother somebody, I would have thought? Anyway, I suppose the new patrol vessels will be in service - eventually.
i dived it last year

The leader class frigate, one of the finest class of frigates in history.
26 in service with the Royal Navy at one point............sad end for such a fine ship.
We are lucky if we have 26 ships these days......never mind one class with 26 of the type.
All the best to our New Zealand friends.
