QM&TM get a solid 10 on this. The Jaynetts got a 10 when they made theirs. Others have tried and failed to connect. QM&TM are the greatest...I think they are one of the best all time groups, very talanted indeed. Timing is perfect. I still recall the song vividly as I was shipping out across the pond.

This was a great song by the Jaynetts (or Jaynettes, depending on which site you go to). It is one of the few times that a rock song was sung by an R&B girl group. I remember it was a hit, but I didn't think it made it into the top ten. Was is #2 on the pop or R&B chart?

Actually it was the summer of 1963 (the year I was born) that it went to #2 for the Jaynettes. It's one of the most mysterious songs ever written and performed -- no one is quite sure of what the significance of the 'roses' were and Sally's secrets. The only reason why I remember it as 1963, is because it's played a lot in movies that are about or a have stories associated w/ JFK's assassination (even "The Waltons" TV movie set during that time period used this tune).

Sounds so good.  The singer is deliberately singing this song like a girl for effect... and it works.... like an Iggy Pop performance. I always loved the Jaynettes version, but always felt the production values on their hit weren't so swell... Nice to hear it really thumped out here... Dig the bass!
