I own two XR400rs, an '01 and and '03 that is CA plated.

We ride almost all the places shown in this video and I would not want anything under me than an XR400. It is one of the most reliable bikes out there still. It has gotten me back to camp everytime, sometimes with other bikes in tow.LOL

The tractor like torque will get you up anything, as long as you can stay on it.

Those newer, high reving, light flywheel are no match for an XR in the tight single track. I have seen it many times, you come around a slow blind corner only to be face to face with a steep uphill switch back. With the XR, no problem, just roll on the throttle and torque your way up and out. I never have to feather the clutch to keep rpm up. The only maintainance I have done on my two XR400Rs is change the oil/filter and checked or adjusted the valves a couple of times a year.

To all the xr400r owners, I am about to have the top end rebuilt on my 02 xr400r, has anyone got any suggestions on after market parts. And will up grading the carburetor eliminate the starting issues. Nice video seeing the xr prove it self on hill climbs, I was so disappointed when they stopped selling them new.

There are not many aftermarket parts available for XR 400 engines. I am installing an over-sized Wiseco piston and a new timing chain and guide in mine. There are aftermarket cam-shafts available for the XR but you end up sacrificing either your low or high-end power.
