Those are called Processionary Catipilliars. They follow eachother. Its what they do. If you lined them all up on the rim of a bowl, they would follow the one in front of them around and around and around. They would eventually die, even if you put their food in the bowl for them.

I've seen this where there would be a long line of these things crossing a roan and a car would come alone and squash then in two spots. The other ones would get all confused for a bit, but eventually start to reorganize and walk around their dead little friends.

I grew up in a small rural town, we actually watched this happen because we were that bored.

We have the same where we live every spring. These things get attached into a chain and you usually find them on trees. But also massive chains on the floor. When the first of the line falls, the rest follow. They usually fall on pavements or on roads, where sideway trees grow. But when cars or people run over them, it's kinda nasty. I remember I had about 20 caterpillars fall on the front of my car once, it suprised me so much, I almost had an accident... I don't like insects XD
