@benhotahot Oh no, I forgot about that...and he pardoned Nixon. But I think he did the pardon and the Commision because he was convinced, probably by others, that the country would fall into chaos if he didn't. He was a better choice to take over than most, in fact it's a miracle he was chosen and not some REALLY harmful pol.
"Ringo" fans.... In honor of Ringo's 70th, I hope U will check out my "RINGO"video. It's very retro with Beatleish touches & was done as a labor of love and with the utmost respect for the Fabs. My attempt at putting a little bit of the Beatle spirit out there for Beatle fans. It's also my tribute to George Harrison's slide playing as well as Ringo's unique style.
I love George (: What a cool meeting, President + Beatle! Does anyone know George's political affiliations? Because his song Taxman is pretty clear on his stance on taxes..... but otherwise he seemed to keep his opinions pretty quiet...
I always wondered what George Harrison's dad looked like. Hahahaha, right on, thanks for sharing this. It was a good video. I'd take it to the dance with me.
I agree with MusicParade321, I also thought it was funny that every one thought it was a bigger deal to meat an beatle then to meat the president. Now there is only Paul and Ringo left but i would still love to meet one of them than any one else.
I think he was a good man and he fought for Civil Rights when he was an undergrad in the 1930s. (He and his teammates refused to play in a football game unless ALL their team members were included as they had a black teammate. Ford said that if his teammate was excluded, then he would not play. As it turned out, his teammate was allowed to play and the game went on.) That speaks to a lot of good about Ford.
@BeatleBangs1964 So glad you posted this proof, I always thought he was too good a man for the office but he was tainted by the pardon and the Warren Commission. But I always thought he agreed to those to save the country, in his lights. He was wrong, tell the truth and shame the devil I believe (metaphorically only, I believe organized religion is the devil) but imagine the pressure brought to bear?
Harold Sr. left his stamp on George! In 1974, a decade after the Beatles came to America, Harold Sr. had even LONGER hair than George did and it was even WAVIER!
@twinoak170 Very, very true. Great leaders in any realm, whether it is art or science or social activism, on the level of a Mozart or a Beatle or a Galileo or a Gandhi, are greater in importance than any politician. A President is simply a replaceable part of a power structure greater than himself.
@twinoak170 No lie, although Gerald Ford was, from all I've ever read or heard, a normal, straight, considerate, moral man, not too far right and somewhat progressive, and his sons were, as evidenced here, loved and respected. They seem like admirable guys as well. That said, George is thoughtful, articulate and kind as usual and Billy Preston's afro is the BEST EVER! It dominates everything! He must have got shotgun all the time ;-)
haha they are two separate arguments. George is a music legend and the president runs the united states. In England it's considered the biggest honor to meet the queen.
@Thedisableddiaper Jeez, is that all you're going to say? What was George like? Were his parents wonderful, like it seemed? You see them at George & Patti's wedding, so warm to Patti, you see George's interview in Ireland where he's distracted by his mother's Irish cousins off-camera because his mother is there too (I thought some chick had distracted him!) I read George's mother let Paul and George practice in her house in early days and fed them all. Come on, tell all! Or a little bit?
In the 1970s George Harrison held one of the key cards to one of the major issues of world significance in those days - and that question was whether a Beatle's re-union would ever occur and when. It was a major cultural concern as well as a major corporate financial consideration, particularly as to the corporate rights and holdings to the Beatles '60s images, recordings, and all audio, and footage, in the context of any post-1960's Beatles existance. George Harrison was an international concern.
@Richardhedditch261 R U serious, it was a major cultural distraction in the western world & possibly in elite India due to George's religion & friend Ravi (oh - India IS George's but that's a tiny part of the whole); as far as the major corporate and financial concerns - those were crucial to the music industry and its sideshoots only & not the whole industry either. But I like the idea of George having control after being squelched by the 2 giant egos for so long! Do you have evidence?
@beatleman69 . Not to sound gay or anything but i can tell by your name that you are a good person. That being said, gerald ford was the only president that was NEVER elected.
@daprezzzzzz Yeah, he was never elected because he wasn't part of a political machine. I suspect he was too honest and moral to ever be backed by the real powers that run the country.
@chrstnlmllr51 Ford made a great comeback in '76. He was 33 points behind in early polls, disappointed many by pardoning Nixon and had the whole Nixon-mess hung around his neck. After 8 years of GOP rule (badly tarnished by Watergate) it was historically likely that the Dems would win. Still, Ford fended off Reagan then rallied to only lose in the end by a small margin (297 electoral votes to Ford's 240) and a small popular vote margin of defeat. We'd have been better offf if Ford won!
Funny when you think about it and nothing against Ford, but, George is here meeting a dignitary and it's really George, of the whole group that's had the most impact on the world. Ford is the one that should be making the fuss about meeting George. Not the other way around. Back then, people maybe didn't think of it that way, but now, I think people would. Crazy is our little world, isn't it? :)
Even though George said he was having much more fun in this band, John Lennon did say that around this time George and Billy were saying how cool it would be if they could form a band together with John. That would have been a godsend...but John said no because they didn't want Yoko in the band.
If my dad was the president of the USA, I'd ask him exactly that: "pleeeaaase, can we invite George Harrison for lunch ? Pleeeaaase daaaad!" Well done, Jack Ford.
It was Jack Ford that ran out of his bedroom into the hallway of the White House just as Queen Elizabeth and Philip were being escorted through. He was only wearing a towel.
Elizabeth said to Betty. "Don't worry, I've got one of those in my house too."

I'll wager Harold Sr. never in his wildest imagination ever thought he'd meet the US President or that George would become a household name loved the world over.
George was the only beatle to visit the White House. Elvis was there a couple of years earlier to see Nixon, and to slam the Beatles. Telling Nixon that they were "Bad" for american youth, and labeled their music "drug oriented" I`m a huge Elvis fan and love both him and his music, but i wish he never did that to the Beatles.

never have. never will! At least John and George retained their dignity and self respect til their dying days. and Paulo and Ringo will as well when it's their time. Elvis was just an entertainer who took it all for granted in the last 15 yrs of his career and surrounded himself with sycophants and died of the very thing he hypocritically denounced-Drugs! Only the Sun records era and his return to memphis are worthy of note. All else was trite and ridiculous. Some "King"!
i agree. he was just a stand in until Nixon's unfinished term expired. He wasn't meant to be president anyway, but what do you do when the president resigns? Like Jimmy Carter, he was trying to keep things afloat until someone with a plan that might work would take over. Of course it never happened. 33 yrs later and we're still waiting.
