  • Fantastic video. Well made, and to the point. You are a very informative, clear, concise, talented teacher. Keep up the great work. Thanks to you, I just bought the three point lighting kit you suggested.

  • What type of lighting is better for the camera. Tungsten or Florescent?

  • Thank you! I bought a 3 light set like this and was trying to get the Noir look. Now I know how. Great video!

  • One question, what the piece of equipment you use for the background? it looks so easy to flip round and change from black to white, where did you get it? Thanks

  • This is the best video on lighting I've seen so far. You're a genius!

  • please tell me what is the name of that mini portable white background used in this video?

  • @al3ndlib If you look in the description there is a direct link to it but we only sell in Europe.

  • Great tutorial! - I am considering buying this lighting kit with the three soft boxes. I am concerned that there is no hard light capabilities of this kit. Do you find that you need to buy another light for situations where you want a strong hard light with a narrow stream?

  • @Coogenius They are soft lights so if you want to produce hard lighting effects then you would need another type of light.

  • Hey I just watched DesignedToBePersonal's video response to your video and thought I'd watch yours to see what she was talking about. Really interesting. You do a great job of explaining how it works. I thought the hair light was more than she needed. Looks good here though. Thanks

  • Love your video. Wonderfully informational.

  • Gavin, what if I wanted to create the last part of your video, when you put your hat on, but I dont have the hair light? I have a rather cheap lighting set that I got off of Ebay, it did come with 2 soft boxes and another light that came with a gold umbrella. I know I dont have all the right info, but I am just starting out, and dont know the name of my light set (sorry) besides i am at work at the moment. Do you have an email that I can send you the info rather than putting it on here?

  • Excellent video tutorial.

  • Thank you, so much. I've been searching for lighting tutorials and yours was the most helpful for me.

  • This video was so much better explained than the uni workshop we did about lighting.

  • Or do you know of anywhere in Canada that I could buy the lighting system you are using or a kit equel to it...

    Thanks

    Art

  • Gavin great video and my question is would this three light set up be worth buying for taking portraits and would I be able to take full length pictures with these lights..

CowboyStudio 2275 Watt Digital Video Continuous Softbox Lighting Kit BOOM Set with Carrying Case - 2 Light stands, 2 Softboxes, 1 Boom Kit

This will come up in google search...

    Thank you

    Art

  • @miraroadvolfire If all you want is to take portraits then you should go for a studio flash set up, but that kit probably would give you just enough light for full length using high iso

  • hello, I am trying to have the white background as in this video. I have a pure white paper background, but I cant have the same white you do on my video.

I use Canon HG-20 HD camcorder, and even when only shooting the background I cant achieve the perfect white, any help will be much appreciated.

  • @kobitriki You need to alter the exposure on your camera to make it lighter.

  • @smickphoto thank you :) I use Aperture-Priority mode with F1.8 and now I do get the pure white when shooting the soft box but not the white background paper, I use brand new Savage "super white" paper - it is the paper "blame" or I need more light?

    thx again

  • @kobitriki You need to use manual exposure or exposure compensation not an automatic mode.

  • @smickphoto WOW!! I missed that I need to push the joystick to enable manual exposure, this is working like charm now. many thx!!!

  • @smickphoto thx, works like a charm :)

  • @smickphoto actually, he should put the white balance on manual and use a picture of the white paper.

  • @WAYOFFproduction Thank you for your order - We are pleased to announce that we now ship to Switzerland

  • Brilliant video. Thank you..

  • aren't those twirly bulbs daylight balanced though?

  • great video for sure... very informative

  • One final question, were did you purchase those backdrops? i really like those because they are portable. Ive only seen portable chroma keys for sale.

  • @rubent100 The backdrops are available on our website smick co uk , the important thing with a white background is to light it well and a black background you dont light.

  • When you have a black bacground, do you light it?

  • best lighting tutorial I've ever seen.

  • All of these are excellent, some of the most helpful clips I've found thus far, thanks much!

  • Excellent stuff. I hope elf & safety don't see the smoke.

  • Fantastic video and great explaination. It's nice to "see" what you're explaining, much more valuable that way. Can you tell me what wattage these light run as well as softbox dimension and are these 5500k bulbs?

  • Great tutorial....its funny when you know how to do somethng but you find out about new ideeas that you never thought about..:))) I like it. Have a great weekend. All the best.

  • Great thank you... unfussy explanation

  • This was excellent. Well done. Thank you!

  • I sure wish I had those lights a long time ago. I'm starting to upgrade for my youtube vids.

    Thanks for posting. :)

  • Your white background shot looked like a chroma keyed shot stuck on a white backdrop. Was it actually shot on white?

  • The white background was shot on a white backdrop no chroma key at all.

  • @smickphoto Can you explain how your black and white backgrounds look so good? As one stated before, it looks like you are keyed and placed on an all back or white solid color.

  • @smickphoto Great, do you guys ship to the US? What is shipping charge?

  • great video. At the end of the video, the background appears much more black. Is the contrast of the video enhanced a bit more with video editting?

  • cool

  • This is a wonderful how-to. Thanks for posting.

  • smoke added later? I think maybe yes. Very interesting, thank you
