  • the sound is harsh cause they are playing through fender uitar amps not a PA

  • all the stupid comments..you people should stay with rap or even smooth jazz til you become real jazz listeners........

  • I love the tone of George Adams' saxophone.

  • Sorry if that sounds harsh but this is simply appalling.

  • Okay Wow. This is probably the worst Jazz I've ever heard, and of Mingus. That pianist sounds like a five-year-old having a seizure on the keys. 4:10-6:00 = total crap. This is disgraceful to Jazz.

  • insanity

  • quando la rai trasmetteva programmi seri..

  • Hamiet Bluiett takes the second solo

  • Merry Christmas/Happy Hannukah, Larv....

  • Esto es IMPRESIONANTE!

  • I saw Mingus quite a few times in Montreal, He was my favorite jazz musician - band leader live, and this captures some of the fantastic energy, danger and soul of Mingus live. His records were good, but jazz live is where it's at! He always had consummate musicians who took risks.

  • Mingus: yeah, just chillin' on stage with my band, y'know..

  • I like how jazz drummers always look like they're going to blow a blood vessel, cause they're working so hard to be musical and subtle. His face is like >X-0> and he's playing ting ting tingting ting tingting splash splash badapa!

  • i creatd a youtube account only to comment this.

it is one of the most beautiful things i ever heard!

    no day without this

  • gotta love Don Pullen

  • I wish I could've been one of the lucky people to see this live

  • First time i watched this video a hellavu years ago i was high as hell and i Hallucinated watching this. It tells me an amazing story about a trip to brazil full of animals that can dance and talk

  • Oh.. My.. God..

  • Amazing!! all i wanted to say

  • Hamiet has nothing on Ronnie Cuber xD

  • Sheesh! This is a great team of players, eh?These guys have such accuracy and emotion.

  • so no one is gonna comment on those high ass notes this Hamiet character was playing with that fat ass baritone sax like that isn't one of the most impossible things to do?

  • So true the poor lady may could hear some HM in the beginning and as soon as the brass comes in- this is my flowers... a genius with friends on the stage which are also genius musicians....

  • george adams is a great!

  • I like how Mingus just stands there so calmly and chews on his gum like it's no feat at all.

  • Around 17 people are deaf here!!!

  • mellontone

  • Mingus in a creative free-fall.

  • Synchronize this!!

  • George Adams has the dopest look

  • if people watched this every day the world would be a better place

  • wow, hamiett bluieet playing extreme high notes on baritone sax.

  • That footage of the piano mans left hand is thrilling! And no one ever plays the Bari like that!

  • That footage of the piano mans left hand is thrilling!

  • Holy shit.

  • wet girl

  • 15 bitches didn't like the flowers.

  • woah. he made that sax sound like a screamer trumpet. RESPECT MY MAN, respect

  • Incredible video! Great stuff.

  • and idk who that is wit da crazy fingers on keys...but he did his thang 2!!!!!

  • @wall2126 Don pullen...

  • Great Sax!

  • This song sounds NOTHING like I thought it would.

The poor lady that received these flowers...She must have have been overwhelmed.

  • @Gearsdisraeli she probably got a kicking.

  • @Gearsdisraeli I think of it more like the moment youre buying the flowers and going to her house to give them to her. The emotions are just..well you know. This

  • @salstoli That's cool, except that is a tenor sax :p Altissimo notes ftw?

  • who is the 13 fucking persons who don't love this

  • if there was ever a clip that made me consider switching from bass guitar to alto sax, this would be it...

  • gerry mulligan then hamiut bluiet

  • Wow Mingus, those flowers that you're giving to that lady are pretty intense. Are you sure they don't contain DMT, or something like that?

  • Mingus: The Sexual History Of Humans. In Nine Minutes.

  • mingus is king...no doubt about it...absolutely

  • If I had to chose 1 word to describe Mingus & his music, it would obviously have to be "genius". Some of his stuff is so intricate. He reminds me of a modern Mozart.

  • i wouldn't read too much into mingus' demeanor here; he was a man of many moods, & seems to me to exude an air of cool professionalism. maybe he was travel-weary, or somehow less-than-enthusiastic about the circumstances of the festival...in any case, he employed adams & pullen for many yrs., so i don't think it's a question of displeasure w/ the music...

  • completely enjoyed this VITAL, musical history, stellar show

  • This entire band played their azzes off on this piece. I love Great music...

  • @Beyondlife7

    THE SIMILAR PRISONERS

    cdbaby(dot)com/cd/similarprisoners

  • this goes beyond anything musical.. its like carnal. like becoming your instrument but even more than that. like something animalistic

  • This is ridiculously good. Anyone know where it's from? I mean is there more?

    Thanks for posting!

  • Absolute bad asses

  • pure, distilled 200 proof genius!

  • The Tenor and Bari are just, too badass. Never thought it could be achieved, but it has been by these guys apparently.

  • WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!!!! F*&^%IN AMAZING

  • If you cant' connect with this track, you got a hole in your soul or head or whatever.Like in photography there are those who are too damn technical and those who were born to imagine and create their art in whatever and whoever and whenever magic they felt like. Thank you Mr.Mingus for letting us young and old true artists feel and hear your heart.

  • This music sounds disjointed. I am not impressed with this display of scattered musical thought.. The musicians play a lot of scales in the proper key but just like a painting drawn by some kook, I just don't feel the love. I too can play crazy scales in the proper key but that doesn't make it any good.

I have heard some music from C. Mingus but this I just am not sure about this piece...

Can someone tell me what I am missing or wake me from this nightmare?

  • @jasonbourneabc123 I think it's just opinion. This song might be more about the playing than the product. I can follow the music, but I don't like this as much as other songs...

  • @jasonbourneabc123 - I'm not so sure Mingus himself was partcularly pleased with this product - he certainly doesn't look it - he was often very engaged with his musicians, cheering them on, (I saw it myself, with my own eyes several times) etc, but not here. Maybe it was the setting but in general, he wasn't a big fan of 'the new wave'. My impression is that here he was blocking out the soloists and just playing his jazz on the basic musicial structure, locking in with Danny Richmond.

  • @vectortemple I have to disagree entirely with Mingus not being a fan of "the new wave" - why in the hell would he hire George Adams and Don Pullen if I didn't want to hear their solos.

On another note. This video is SO GOOD! I love George Adams and Don Pullen

  • @smackbear1 - the video is great, no question. I'm not saying he didn't want to hear them, just that I don't think it was his preferred approach - he's on the record about that - look around for Mingus quotes. Anyhow, why would he hire them? Money - in particular, it was European tour and that was the sound people wanted to hear. Also maybe he looks a bit disinterested (uncharacteristically) because this was 1974 and Mingus already may not have been feeling all that well. RIP Oh Great One.

  • fuckin amazing!!!!

  • Mayhem.

  • The Greatest!! thank you for the posting.French Charlie

  • This is wonderful!

  • ooh a young hamiet bluiett!

  • Again, and again, I come to this video and bask in the sound of genius. This is simply the greatest music video I have ever had the pleasure immersing myself in. I wish I was there 36 years ago.

  • yo, that sax is killin it! it's ppl like that that make me question y i'm even here

  • Controlled insanity. Unbelievable!

  • The sound of douche, and I love it as much as my lover Bernie.

    your truley

    Rab Hines

  • unfuckinbelievable :D how someone could play like this........ every single one of them :)))))))))) possibly greatest performance iv ever seen

  • surrey with the fringe on top

  • Unreal.

  • it is fascinating: how do they know what to play?

  • @reselroland - God told them what to play....

  • The great Hamiet will perform live at Monteroduni this summer. More info on the official site of the Eddie Lang Jazz Festival.

  • GOOO GOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

    JAZZ is LIFE!

  • Oh man, I have no words for this awesomeness!!!

  • play that good cos they sniffin good powder man

  • powder probably helped but if you haven't got it powder won't help...

  • from 0:49 to 1:10 some of the most divine sounds I've heard.

  • This was recorded in '74 - everyone was playing that way then, thanks to John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, etc etc who had been playing that way since the late '50s, early '60s.

In fact, Mingus himself was no great fan of 'the 'new school' and he doesn't appear to be too impressed here....

  • @vectortemple of course, Mingus was not much of a fan of anything, except beating the mortal shit out of everyone in his band....which, in my book, only makes him more badass.

  • @Prattinator999 - gotta agree on that - he was NOT a dude you wanted to mess with but that just adds to greatness because you hear all that passion and FIRE in his music. He was BAD and he didn't need to wear any costumes or talk any trash to prove it - you just looked at the guy and you KNEW. I saw him in clubs back in the day but was scared to go anywhere near him - little white kid like me - I figured he'd probably pick up that big stool he was sitting on and crack it over my head.. LOL

  • @Prattinator999 - actually it looks to me like Mingus is studiously ignoring Adams and just locking into Danny Richmond...

  • @vectortemple as it should be. gotta keep that bottom tight :)

  • @NYgbomb71 - yeah, you got that one right - a leaky bottom and the whole boat sinks...

To me it's a miracle anybody could be THAT good....

  • I LOVE YOU MR CHARLES MINGUS!

  • very low

  • someone got a chart ( a music sheet) of this wonderfull piece?

i didnt found it on the web so if someone can send it to me or can put a link for the music sheet it will be great...

  • @hellref i know ive looking for it everywhere but i cant find any hin of it

  • @hellref

You can download it in pdf.

  • @MasterOfGloubi

thanks alot!!! it is amazing it is just perfect thnk you very much.... you just cant imagine how happy i am right now!

  • George adams' opening phrase is class.

  • cari americani il miglior palco per il jazz è stato in italia ad umbria iazz ,una energia pura mai più raggiunta, mitica estate del 1974 , tirate fuori le foto bn metteltele su you tube che casino quel palco bellissimo

  • It was still in black and white in Italy in this time

  • does anyone know a place where I could get charts for this. I could do it myself.... but I'd really rather not....

  • this feels too fast to mee

  • Comment removed

  • That was part of the Mingus Big Band's thing. They had the ability to play their songs way too fast, so sometimes they did.

  • @HighKingTurgon - so it seems. Mingus loved to crank it up... faster and faster, louder and louder - but he was ALWAYS IN CONTROL - it was reflex for him

  • Why is George Adams so unknown? His recordings with Don Pullen are beyond amazing!

  • There's a definite Coltrane vibe here.

  • Good recording. Clear melodic lines. Mingus frequently verges on the edge of free jazz, or total insanity by others, but mostly returns to the song's structure

  • Not only did George Adams play an awesome solo, but he did part of it on one foot. What a badass.

  • lol

  • buddy is killin that tenor sax....

  • gimme those glasses 0:58 !!

that's the best Mingus performance without Eric Dolphy that I've seen.

  • Oh man! This is very good music. George Adams is INCREDIBLE at the tenor sax. He's got that Albert Ayler tone in his playing.

  • I can also hear a mix or Coltrane and Coleman. Especially the phrasing and the use of blue notes and 7ths in specific beats on the measure.

  • amazing... just amazing jazz and metal RULES

  • FAMOSO DESDE 1963

  • Wow! Now this is really something to see and hear!

    Very, very cool!

    * * * * *

  • Joer con que fuerzas estaban peleando estos xamanes?

  • здорово!

  • Babelfish translates this Russian comment as "it is healthy". I think I agree!

  • Don pullen is like fuck sheet music!

  • LOL 5:55 ! the bari-player is just insane :D

  • Mingus went to LACC on Vermont

  • wow....sick....those mothafuckas were bad! wish i were there...

  • YEAH!!!! This is it!

    I LOVE the sax solos...

God damn' I want to be there!

  • rai tre 1974 eravamo troppo avanti a umbria jazz si suonava x le strade , non si pagava , mingus uno dei fondatori di umbria jazz,

  • perdona la mia ignoranza ma cos'è umbria jazz?

  • i love those free solos...

  • THIS RIPS!

  • Thank you for the info. could you send me the studio version/ a bootleg of this? im working on a project based on sampling. I want to create a jazzy instrumental containing the crazy bassline in the first few seconds. It's okay if it's slower as long as it sounds similar. Hope you can help me. Cheers

  • was there a studio version? I really dig the bassline at the beginning.

  • Yes, there is a studio version on the Mingus Moves album, but it is slower and no where near as exciting as this. I have tons of Mingus bootlegs, and I've never heard another version besides this and the studio versions. This is truly a unique document.

  • This is brilliant, I am loving it. However sometimes the saxes' solos were way too much on the brink of cacaphony, especially the bari solo. I know it is supposed to be crazy but that much squealing is just tiresome. It felt like it went beyond expression and became pointless. At times. The tune is magic. Wish we actually had bari players in our school, I'd love to play this tune.

  • The saxes were representing the dialogue between an overjoyed woman and the male. The beginning represents him strolling to her stoop with his head held high.

  • I wanna be there back in 74' ....badly

  • Come on, now you have X factor.

And consider this was braodcast onTV!

  • la cagada q pendejos

  • This is one of the better Mingus vids on youtube. Thanks for posting! One of my favs

  • wow that whole thing was crazy!

  • The whole thing is magical. I could watch this twenty times in a row and be able to get behind something new, with enthusiasm in this song each time. Thanks for posting this video, you are a good man.

  • I second this.

  • Me too.

  • @barrywinehousexp I agree wholeheartedly.

  • @barrywinehousexp you got an incredible musical taste

  • Fantastic Rhythm section!

  • unbeilivable notes on the bari

  • Jaw-dropping. Seriously. The talent and beauty that perform in this video IS music.

  • Dang, that's amazing.

  • no, you can't.

  • The sound the first soloist gets out of his tenor is just ungodly, in terms of traditional beauty and skill. What the fuck is going on here and why do I like it so much?

  • Traditional compared to what?

George Adams was a fantastic human being whose horn transmitted the beautiful music of his soul. May it live forever!

  • a prophet is never recognised in his own land!!charles mingus was a god incarnate on bass, his compositions were always cutting edge, superb and luxurious!he was tormented to death, his compositions tossed into a dumpster in the rain along with the furnishings of his home&sometimes music school for disadvantaged youths!he was an international star mistreated&abused in his own land!ostrasized when he should have been treasured, revered and rewarded for his work with youth to instill music in them!!!

  • because charles mingus looks so fuckin cool

  • nobody really cares about what he looks like. he could be the ugliest man alive and if he could still groove that bass I'd still listen to his music.

  • Ugly? I thought he was actually nice-looking, even when he was this old

  • Sounds like something from heaven brougt to us by angels.

  • And it is, because the sad thing is that except for Hamiet Bluiett all these giants of jazz are long dead. We will never hear the likes of them again.

  • this song is magestic, I can feel it with my eyes closed

  • No you couldn't. Seriously, you couldn't. You obviously don't know what music is

  • George Adams wrote this little number. A real great band. The best post dolphy mingus band

  • This cooks so hard it's on fire. Everybody is burning Nitro. But that was Mingus--A total genius to put music like this together and always have the best players. Both Don Pullen and George Adams were giants--so incredible yet underrated. God only knows why. And has anyone ever thanked Dannie Richmond for being and giving?? I love George's quote of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" at 2:01. Way Out West, for sure!!
