I think that the decision is just politics so India risks to choose the typhoon because there are several countries in the buissness nevertheless the rafale is better
Latest today (26 April 2011) is that Ministry of Defense down selected Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale. Teens, Mig and Gripen out. Bye, bye teens.
@nishkov if u presume russian planes are flyin coffins then u r wrong, it is the protective umbrella of russian planes india breathed normally for more than 2 decades, and believe me when i say that though mig 35 is out of race, defense agreements between russia & india go much furthur than one deal though it is a setback. anyway ur name sugests u r a russian r u not ???? if u r it is sad that u spk bad of ur own country
If they really want the best aircraft for them then they will select the Eurofighter. If however they want a cheaper aircraft then the Gripen is the best value. The Russian aircraft that they have relied on are way to expensive to maintain properly and become dangerous to fly because of this. The Gripen should be much cheaper and easier to maintain largely because of its advanced self diagnostic computer.
Does anyone know why we should not just buy more of su-30mkis? The SU-30MKI is cheaper even after installing western avionics on russian airframes, we already have the technology and the production facilities as well as support infrastructure. and as they say its one of the best fighters in the world today.
could someone clarify what if any are the drawbacks of the SU 30 MKI as it relates to India MRCA requirement? Thanks a bunch
@Tomahawk1999 The Su30MKI is a powerful aircraft. A greater diversity of capabilities makes for a stronger air force however. Typhoons would provide a reduced radar cross section compared to the Sukhoi while still having a large weapons load and powerful radar. Initial costs are higher but total cost of ownership can be lower for some western designs and certain included technology is superior. Also since future domestic production is important technology transfer is a key issue.
this aircraft is in lead out of 6 as far as procurement of 126 aircraft by indian airforce is concerned..mark my words soon it will be flying on indian skies and making porkis and chinkis sweat in their pants lol
Throw in HAL's dhruv ALH, LCH, LOH and proposed IMH, I think by 2020 we have a pretty damned good air fleet in all three services and all three premier paramilitary services (BSF-CRPF-CG).
with our 2015-2017 target for 250 of each MCA and FGFA twin kaveri engine stealth aircrafts, our only immediate requirement would be a carrier based and air based EW aircraft like the EF-18 growler to complete our arsenal.
We have revived the Airvat project to be used in Tandem with the Phalcons. We have the kamov's in naval AWACS role. So just like our layered theater missile defense with PAD-AAD-AD1 and 2-barak-S-300PMU2 and may be the Arrow, how about theater layered awacs and aircraft defense. We can contain crime within india too, say may be through creating inter-state border police with their aviation wing donning the inland BSF role.
+ 25 Su-33K, 25 Mig-29k and 10 of each Rafale M, F-18 Super hornet and Sea Gripen along with the initially ordered Navy Tejas for the aircraft carriers based naval operations. Meanwhile transfer fleet of Sea Harriers to the coast guard and retrofit-upgrade the grounded Mig-23 and Mig-25 to the BSF-CRPF aviation wing. What do you all think? May be we can add the Hawk Mk for the trainer role with Naval Hawk for the marine trainer role.
So now looking back to the MMRCA which shall possibly start supplies-delivery 2013, to mantain our trusted war doctrine of variety and surprise, I think we should go for (126+74) tender split into say
1. 100 Mig-35
2. 20 of each Saab JAS 39 Gripen NG, Typhoon, Rafale, Panavia Tornado (if negotiable) and Mirage 2000-5 Mk II for the air force.along with the inital order of LCA Tejas Mk 1
Some defense analyst mentioned, one of the keys to indian air supremacy in recent decades now in the whole of asia (not necessarily just in south asia) is its possession of variety in fighter aircraft arsenal. Meaning bomber role by Mig-27, interceptor-interdictor roles in Mig-21, air superiority in proposed 250+ Su-30MKI, strike role in Mig-29, combat role in SEPECAT Jaguar and Multi-role in Mirage 2000-5 (recent upgrades to Mk 3 2000-5 standards post Kargil).
India needs a plane that will dump bombs on the Chinese and Pakistani's. The Superhornet F/A-18E is the best at this role. The Su-30MKI fills the air superiority role just fine.
su35s and + are definitely best in the world! Two more options being F22 and Eurofighter. Lastly Rafael! My personal choice would be su35s but those are very expensive machines! So next would be MIG35 due to low cost and as previous poster mentioned high manoeuvrability! Our worry should be maintenance too. Do we purchase from countries with whom India has ON/OFF relations! Cause we need a dependable ally in case of the outbreak of war who can promptly supply parts!
the most advance jet at the competition, but the mig-35 is the most maneuverable,so its a tough decision for india, but the mig-35 is clearly on india's mind right now,its cheap n probly can be upgraded wit modern avionics to match future threats, but those avionics n datalinks must be from the west,so buy a ruski airframe n incorporate western avionics on it,that seems like a good deal ennit, eurofighter can be upgraded too,but its too expensive me thinks,u can get 3 migs wit only 1 eurofighter..
you are correct. India would prefer a Russian Airframe and Western Avionics.
That being said, India's trust with Russian products is decreasing. Unfortunately, selecting a Russian plane will give them very little political edge.
In India, the Mig's are tainted. All Mig's have had some troubles. Sadly, The "Tainted Mig's" brand follows Mig-35 as well.
All that aside, Mig 35 and Typhoon are what I would say the best planes in the competition right.
both mig35 n ef are the best in the competition,no doubt about it,but india is a rising economy,i think they can afford a ef fleet,ef is a advance jet wit excellent bvr capability combine that wit the highly agile su30mki india already av,thats a good combination right there,a 1,2 punch,ef will engage enemy jets from bvr combat n if some enemy jet make it through the missile barrage, they will face highly maneuverable su30mki that will finish the job, thats seems like a good deal innit.
@PassionateIndia i've heard india has already bought some mig29k...then they'll have an european one soon (Typhoon or rafale)...then they'll have the T-50....
@fmoa India have chosen EF/Rafael: watch?v=suNTJ6-Ezmo As for the F35...it's nothing compared to the EF (keep in mind only US and UK are getting the complete package). EF fully bombed up showing off it's agility: /watch?v=Q4psRKtsy9c 6 A-A missiles 4 GBU bombs 3 Fuel tanks Nothing comes close as this cleary demonstrates mate. Yo get what you pay for. India has chosen the EF over the Mig due to the Migs engines constantly failing.
The evaluation of the MMRACE tender is in 3 phases. Technical evaluation, flight evaluation and commercial bids which is the last stage. Typhoon will definitely make it to the bidding. And it will have to compete with the extremely low bids of the americans and sweeds, so the price will come down. Besides, they have to manufacture in india which should bring down costs. One of the main reason for the high cost is the low numbers in production which could change if india orders typhoon.
India won't take Eurofighter Typhoon because it cost too much! Eurofighter Typhoon cost $122.5 million close to F-22 Raptor cost &137.5 million! Also Russian Mig-35 might be or not for India Air Force. Mig-35 may be fitted with thrust vectoring! I don't think India would want Mig-35! India Su-30MKI is India Air Superority figher aircraft!
Totally wrong, the EF 122million costs ARE NOT flyaway costs unlike the F-22 flyaway costs of 137million but add to this costs maintenance and low observability maintenance costs and you will get a whopping $354 million bill.(according to Gen Norton Schwartz)
Indian should buy the Gripen or Rafale as they are faster because they do Mach 1.8 while Typhoon is Mach 2!!! Rafale or Grpen will help them escape Enemy Radar
What a crap post. You clearly don't know what you are talking from. Firstly top speed is nothing. 30 year old migs are faster then Rafale or Gripen. Second the Typhoon can accelerate and climb much faster then all other fighters (314m/s). Also it can fly higher (19,800m!!), has supercruise, lower wingload, is more agile subsonic and supersonic. The RCS of the EF is lower then the Rafale and Gripen and its avionics are better. With the Rafale you have about 87% of the EF capability's.
Don't you think typhoon would fall in the heavier class fighter a.k.a air superiority area like su-30mki. IAF need numbers...we already have su-30mki for air dominance. Perhaps...gripen or mig-35 make more sense to me.
To be sincerely i won't start to throw my opinion in this very complicated matter. If EADS thinks its worth to go to India and compete, India must be interested at the EF. Else EADS would withdraw very fast.
Typhoon would be a complicated choice, it lacks AESA radars, it lacks naval capability.
I personally think the Typhoon's are more or less out of the competition because of their $100 + mill. expense which stretches India's budget to the breaking point and the recession going on right now doesnt help.
looking at their overall performace/cost, I think buying more mki's will be a better option.
I think the Rafales are going to be the best choice.
While it lacks for the moment AESA radar, the CAPTOR has its advantages. Like much higher range where its possible to spot a fighter sized plane(over 250km declared by german pilots) and as a unique feature it can generate a 3D picture of the airspace making threat analysis and target aquistion much easier and enhancing pilots situational awareness. But yes it lacks naval capability. EF good at A/A bad at A/G. Rafale good at A/G and bad at A/A.
The EF should not be underestimated . At the Typhoon Meet 08 in Spain shown in this Vid, 7 EF fighted in a skirmish against 27 other planes among others F-18s,F-16s, Harriers II,Tornados etc..The seven Typhoons scored 27:0!!
No big suprise, but didn't know that thanks for the info.
The purchase price of the Eurofighter was the contributing factor on many evalutaions lost and never its performance. Time will tell if India want's to pay the price to be welcomed in the ranks of the illustrious countr'ys which do operate Typhoons.
Well, sadly thats a common problem in a lot of country's to have stupid, incompetent, shortshighted ministry's. A great example is Austrian Eurofighter debacle. When socialists came to power they canceled (imagine!!)Defensive Aid Sub System(DASS),Night Vision and changed from Tranche 2 to Tranche 1. Such people should be jailed.
It has more to do with media than the Ministry, I believe. Media has a bad habit of spicing things up needlessly to feed adrenaline loaded defence enthusiasts on the internet, rather than convey the right news to the general public.
I request Indian public not to entirely trust what they read. The media in our country has taken the freedom for granted and is making Indians live in a world of dreams.
it would be foolish of me to make an assumption right now considering how things in India go...
However, I feel the current elections will have a big impact on whats gonna happen to this competition.
If Left comes to power (third front) or either forms coalition with BJP or Congress, than i think Mig-35 has good chances of winning. Whereas, if BJP or Congress come to power, F-18 will be the best bet.
But, if i minus the elections, i'd say F-18/Mig-35 or Typhoon are the front runners so far.
Whoa, I thought the IAF and the indian minister of defence would be the ones that would decide which Jet will become part of india's inventory! How come now even politicians are taking decisions for the IAF?
The ministry and the government in charge which decides which plane to choose.
See, the Left is a communist party of India, and If it had supported a government to get a majority, it certainly would have kept some conditions before being part of the government. Commies don't like america, and certainly would not want an american plane to win MRCA.
Thankfully, the elections are over now. the Commies were wiped out. Congress has come to power with barely any support from any post-poll parties.
@PassionateIndia though it is wrong to speculate but i think dassault is a far better choice as they r gud enough as far as tech is concerned and also they have 100% edge over others on basis of tech transfer to indian HAL. being completely made in one country makes it easier to transfer tech on gounds of diplomacy. thus i think any knowledgeable indian explained with the pros and cons will chose rafale.
it seems there is a mammoth of people on youtube who like to talk without a prior thought process. Rafale for the win, in every dogfight, the Rafale won against Eurofighter.
There is a marine version of Rafale and no one for the Eurofighter.
The Rafale cost less than Eurofighter.
The hour price is about 35 000 € for Rafale and 70 000 € for Eurofighter.
Eurofighter needs more technical support for every flight than Rafale.
In every competition, the Rafale get a better mark than Eurofighter.
In Swiss, Rafale get 8/10, Typhoon 6/10 and Gripen 6/10.
Best choice = Rafale.
