  • Oh man, I miss playing the viola solo at the beginning of the Intermezzo. Best part ever...on the best instrument ever, of course :D

  • Violas FTW - without them an orchestra sounds quite hollow.

  • Violas + Cellos = FTW!

Bass players are also badasses, especially when they play the exact cello part, like in Mozart`s requiem.

  • Die beste Stelle is immer noch 6:17

  • Bravo, mon dear Holst!

  • Will we all talk about violas and How great they are i gotta say CELLO makes the song! cello rock ORCHESTRA!!

  • all the viola haters are just jealous or havn't heard a good violist on the C or G string :P

  • @VorpalSword9 The only people who actually hate violas are CELLOS, because violas take all their solos.

  • @free2write26 definitely not :D although i think its a joke but... no just no... :D i love violas.. :D

  • Ah! playing this suit was incredibly amazing the different sections were all in the spotlight at some point in all the movements it was truly beautiful to play. :)

  • the pictures move to fast for this song, it's very bothering. but the suite is beautiful! ^^

  • 0:55 gets really quiet guys. I suggest you turn up the volume.

  • Violins can go to hell. Violas will take their place.

  • @gera1262 dont hate, appreciate.

  • violas rocks

  • III. Intermezzo

→ I think that the viola should be more aggressive.

  • We're playing St.Paul's suite in orchestra....but my teacher might take this part out because it's a bit challenging >:[ I love this part so much D:

  • i will have to say i am a violist and i love playing this song with my orchestra and i too think that the viola is essential. im not only saying this cuz its the instrument i play cuz ive only been playing it for about 3 years now, i have also played the violin and played it for 7 years. i think the orchestra sounds weird if the viola isnt playing in it

  • Maybe its because i am a Euphonium player, but i liked the Dargason in 2nd suite better. However, this suite is another unsung marvel (compared to the planets and 1st 2nd suites)

  • This is very beautiful music. Gustav poured his soul into making this music. I should definately do the same when I play it.

  • We are also playing this at school too.. I was so surprised at how great this music was because our orchestra is not really good at this point.. hopefullly we will get better soooon :D

  • isn't the finale same as his second suite for military band ? one of is strings, the other is brass

  • Yea its like 99.9999% identical lol

  • @13Orcun It is VERY common for composers to use music they have already written and alter it only a little to form a "new piece"... It's how they made their money.

  • @vampireslink Holst doesn t compose for money. i m sure

  • @13Orcun first of all he is dead so yur right there, but he composed for an all girls school as his JOB :) I know because I did a report on him for world history! :D

  • @vampireslink so what ? i know it, he did for his students, do you know about why he didn t compose more than he has, because . he gave his time for education for students. one man wished to him "the best things of the earth, including the erradication if all his pupils" of and this brings to you the measure of how holst used his time. Also he hated the planets popularty, he didn't try again to make another planets suite for this reason he didn t take fame. Also he rejected to gain more money.

  • @13Orcun Don't have a piss fit ok? I honestly don't care what you think because I'm know I'm right so take a chill pill. I was trying to be polite about it, apparently you don't have the common decency to do the same. Don't shit bricks over something so small and insignificant.

  • @vampireslink i think you must think about decency with open mind, what is a piss in my sayings, it is very clear that you don t care, just take it easy and try thinking logicly

  • I lvoe the hemiola when he splits the orchestra into 6/8 and 3/4. It's so hard when we play it, but it sounds so cool when you get it right.

  • i think violas bring an air of sarcasm sometimes when they echo violins. just sometimes violins need to be brought down a notch. not always, but sometimes :) i think maybe composers had a sense of humor in their work at times

  • Always must bring them off those squeaky towers they stay in!

  • @trace777777 Pssshhh the second violins aren't in towers TRUST ME! It's the damn firsts.....

  • I play violin also, and I love the E string! lol my friends say I betrayed the violas, even though I still play with them ^_^

  • of course you betrayed them! jk, im sure the violas are fine

  • who played it?

  • Gotta love the "walking" bass at 5:59 when the tempo is like 160.

Love the work Holst has done here.

  • no kidding

  • thanks for putting this on here cuz im trying to learn it for orchestra and i would die with out a good recording to listen to

  • oh well they don't write music very much like that anymore

  • i agree... im also playing this:)

  • Ok, I am a violinist and a flutist. To me comparing the viola and the violin is like comparing the flute and the bass flute. Obviously the former are used more often than the latter, but when the latter is used, it gives a dynamic to the music that wouldn't be there if they were not incorporated. I have deep respect and love for all instruments, for without them we would not know or be able to feel these dynamics.

  • I think everyone here will agree that the viola is essential to any orchestra. I think it is people who have a bad experience with the viola, that give it a bad reputation, If you listen to any decent viola player you would be surprised at how beautiful it is.

  • I play the violin and I love the tone of the viola way more, so I dunno what people are talking about, talking down on it.

  • @joshviolinviola I played viola for 6 years, Went to Bass, but I totally understand what you mean, I learned so much from that viola, It is essential, it isn't always fun, but it's essential, Kinda like bass xD

  • @joshviolinviola I PLAYED VIOLA FOR 6 YEARS! Now i'm a professional Upright bass player, But I sitll break out my viola once n a while :D

  • @robzombie954

I'm afraid I can't take you seriously with your screen name.

    Good day, sir.

  • @aquaboy386 you're judging me based on the name of my youtube account? What does that have to do with anything? Maybe I can't take you seriously because it says aquaboy and not aquaman in your name, my channel name doesn't make me who I am? that's kind've cold right there.

  • @joshviolinviola THANKYOU.

  • @joshviolinviolaWhat's the difference between a viola and a coffin?

The coffin has the dead person on the inside.

  • @que2pineappleWhat's the definition of a minor second?

Two violists playing in unison. Why do violists stand for long periods outside people's houses?

They can't find the key and they don't know when to come in. ok i'm done.

  • @joshviolinviola Honestly, anyone who doesn't appreciate the richness of the viola is just silly or has been purposely set against the instrument. All the string instruments exist because they're all gorgeous in their own fashion. (Cello is the best, of course... ;D)

  • @joshviolinviola Ya...as is the violin, cello, and the bass.

  • @joshviolinviola yes, i'm agree but there isn't good violist on my town, even on my country, so i never heard a good violist live-playing

  • we just got this piece in orchestra. i hope it isnt too hard for us

  • there is a part of the finale that sounds like the music from the old original pride and prejudice movie.

    GORGEOUS.

    still wanna now what orchestra....

  • what orchestra is this? whos recording?

    its excellent. =]

we are playing this in orchestra...but its not nearly as gorgeous, but we're still working. we need the emotion, you know!?

  • Mine is too.

it's an amazingly fun piece to play

  • haha yes it is!

    =D

  • We just had a concert with this suite. It was great but tiring since we had about 4 other songs along with this. lol We get to play nutcracker suite at out next one Yay!

  • I get to play this!

    As a first :), it's very fun

    Very difficult though, must practice!

  • I love this piece! My school orchestra's doing the Brooke Greene Suite but i like this one more. We're thinking of doing this one next year.

  • love the ending.

ive only played the dargason =/. really wanna try the rest of it.

  • i love this. my school orchestra is playing it. st pauls suite is one of the most amazing pieces ever written

  • he has such tragic eyes

  • And such beautiful music

  • I played this in my school orchestra last year-- I hope we perform the Jig this year, since that's my favorite movement.

  • The Intermezzo is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. The Dargason is long and annoying, but so damn catchy! :D

  • I had forgotten how long the final movement was...we just played this last year and I miss it <.< Although I will say I wasn't the best in this for the viola

  • i played this suite with my chamber orchestra earlier this year. i play viola and i just want to say that this is a beautifull suite, but why do we get stuck with the hardest part in the last movement?!

  • Yeah Violas kick ass!

  • Awesome!

  • You obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

  • u have no idea, there are two viola solos in this piece....and w/o viola, most the orchestras base will be lost.

  • u are a nub. you do not know what you are talking about. show some respect will you? do you know how many viola players there are that hate you just because you made that comment?

  • yes, that was the whole point of my comment. I know violias are important, but I'm tired people saying they rock. Its just dumb, and the truth is, many pieces could be played by just replacing the viola section with violins an cellos. There's nothing special about violas, so quit saying they rock!

  • truly i think you have no idea what you are talking about, im a violist and a violinist, viola's are often very important, if you knew something about music and music theory i think you would think otherwise.

  • I beg to differ. As both a violinist/violist/guitarist/bassist and a whole bunch of other stuff. I started out playing the violin and I went to viola because of its sound. Its just the violists don't get as much technical training as violinists, which is why violinist are better than violists. If you've never picked up a good viola and just played the lower two strings together, then you've never felt the pure richness a viola has. As a guitarist I say that the viola does indeed "rock"

  • yeah but he probably doesnt care. I've never been a huge fan of the viola either. Of course I understand and appreciate its importance, but there has always been something about it I'm not too fond of.

But then again, the violin, which I have been playing since I was a wee 5 years old, is my second least favorite of the strings...the deep, rich sound of the cello is my favorite, and the bass comes close second for its use in jazz

    just my two cents..

  • calm down ole chap, just because someone makes a foolish comment doesn't entitle you to explode like a wild babbling buffoon. people are entitled to there opinions, and don't get started with me on this, because i play both violin and viola and i can see where he is coming from.

  • however, what about the Walton Viola Concerto or the Bartok Viola Concerto, those are big viola pieces that do certainly rock, Walton wrote the concerto before he wrote his violin concerto, The viola concerto was so wonderful and skillfully composed that Jascha Heifetz commissioned a violin concerto. look at string quartets, the viola is essential to balancing the chords, also the viola often engages in musical dialogue with the other three instruments. The viola does rock, and it is important!

  • I understand the importance of the Walton, yet I still hate it:) But I absolutely love the Bartok. That last movement fiddling stuff kicks ass!

  • It gives us a chance to show off. :P

  • to be honest, the part isn't that difficult, ive played both the first violin part and the viola part, be thankful that you don't have to jump up an octave on a sudden whim!

  • I love the theme from the Intermezzo! IT'S STUCK IN MY HEAD!

  • Intermezzo is my favorite! I don't mind that one :)

  • @UnderAvg This is my favorite piece and Holst is my favorite composer, I always just felt the Third movement should be the fourth, because when I played this my freshmen year, This would've been perfect it was the last piece of the year and for the solo's for the seniors at the end it would've been a perfect tear jerker ending.

  • The love this suite. The Dargason and Jig are my favorites

  • Agreed. :]

  • holst's music is my drug O_O

  • lol the first time I saw the last movement name I thought it said "Dragon" I was like "sweet" Dargason still pretty awesome :] and a great movement, I just need to get the bowing right x_x lol

  • i love this movement:)

  • dargason is my drug >:]

  • sorry, i meant "makes it feel alive."

  • i love the vivace parts in intermezzo, this video makes feel alive. its funny how the harmony of this movement changes the style of the piece. like at 0:54 it makes it kinda sound like arabian while at 1:36 sounds like country type of music

  • lol i noticed that too.

  • lol i noticed that.

  • Comment removed

  • lol, kinda late response there but thnx for the info :P

    btw, im a viola :/

  • Dargason rules! Which orchestra is playing?

  • i love this suite especially these 2 movements

  • Part III = love

Part IV = little more love
