The film outlived the "propaganda" Stalin kept Eisenstein under his thumb while this was being made, then when Stalin had his ill favored alliance with Hitler the film was shelved, and Eisenstein was kept on "observation".Then when Hitler attacked Russia the film was released. The composer Prokofiev and Eisenstein are now hailed as the artists they truly are.And Stalin? He rots in his crypt!
The Russians and the Swedes went at it for centuries. No wonder each side thinks the other is an evil horde, etc. However, this film is a testament to the human spirit in the face of adversity, regardless of nationality. Although placing the themes and images in a national context is inevitable to make the drama effective. I'm with P1B1U1H1 in saying that the soundtrack has been vastly improved.
This piece of music was strictly to kiss Stalin's ass. Anyone that went against the Party died. They were shot. This music is nothing about national pride or a testament to the human spirit.
No one was shot by the music or the composer. Music transcends all this. Sure Stalin "used" music. But the music lives on. I disagree that this particular music was designed just to make Stalin feel good. The film is a propaganda piece for sure. The more national pride instilled in the people, the more they are willing to stand, fight, and die for the motherland. Stalin merely wanted the film to instill such values to get more suckers to die for his Napoleon complex.
The sad tones are beautiful. the horn of sadness, the low brass tones, the mornful chorus, the base strong. a tragedy from frost and cold.

The film is fantastically re-rendered. The orchestra is also better than the original. Where can you get a copy of this beautiful film?
