Saw the original lineup twice. Music so good it literally hurt. The first time I could not believe my eyes or ears. It was impossible to play what they played. Changed my life forever. How the hell can you top that if you are Johnny McGlaughin? Maybe Miles and Duke were better composers but for sheer inspiration no one topped the first MO.
I just wish the qualiy of this video was better, from what I hear and see I am sure it was a truly memorable performance. I saw him live once, the only limitations were the bad acoustics of the hall itself ... typical hockey rinque... his music requires a great PA and hall. He didn't always play in the best halls with quality PA's. John is not overrated, but apparently still underappreciated by hookah heads and mental patients like 'DJ' everywhere.
A guy with the name DJ in his name calling John McLaughlin, one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, 'overrated'... I think that speaks volumes about the quality of human being on the internet.
@djrbfm I mean no sisrepect towards your musical skills. I dont know what they are. The Idea that JM is over rated in a world that embraces ignorance as a skill is sad. I hope you get that.
I've seen quite a few videos of the 2nd Mahavishu Orchestra, but this is the only one I've seen that truly gave a taste of what I saw them do live in November 1974, just before recording 'Visions' - with the improv interactions here between John & Jean of particular note and intensity. Unfortunately it's hard to find good live-performance recordings during that prime level of maturity of this band. To In comparison, the Montreux performance video is a sleeping pill.
I do envy you Sir for having been able to take part in those concerts in the 70`s.
When it comes to intensity I would prefer MO 1 but MO 2 was still pretty intense in comparison to the one truth band and the later bands of John. During this period of MO2 He was still a disciple of Guru Chinmoy and later when he left he become more a common Jazz player in my view, part of his unique strength disappeared
however the poor quality of most MO videos takes away part of the joy, I wonder why it seems impossible to improve them with todays technical possibilities.
That guitar was made by Rex Brogue. If memory is correct a labor of love that took 13 months to build.

This music shores up the soul cries, it builds. If you really listen into this it's pure soul. Yummy, great breakfast.

mate, i as his biggest fan, but as i've gotten more into music composition, i can see the flaws in his writing, not his guitar.
still, he is one of the greatest living.

@djrbfm - The only "bullshit" I smell is emanating from you, peckerhead.
And the only place that you played was in your parents basement. Did your mommy like it?

This was the time when music was an experience and not only a media experience by enhanced Cds etc.... lol.Music did the talking,as it should be.
Walden is slaying with that China..he is riding that china into.....well..china :D
Mahavishnu Orchestra,any lineup,always macig,always vital.
I am not impressed easily but MO does it for me,as they say.

After watching parts 1, 2, and 3...
It was mind blowing then and remains so now.
(wow and flutter not withstanding).
I dig Narada (many, many bows) - it's pure beauty, but few can shine in Cobham's shadow.
and yes, he went on to produce Aretha and Mariah. both Queens of their time.
