@donbucho I think it's a tribute to Big Star because the Jayhawks were influenced by the former Alex Chilton band. Besides, Gary Louris played with one of their members in the supergroup Golden Smog.
@audstu1 I didn't think so. However, they did have a professional connection (via Golden Smog, which included Jody Stephens). They also opened for Alex Chilton early on in their career, performed with him during Taste of MN, etc.
So, I guess what I'm saying is I don't know if I'd call it a tribute per se, but the title of the song is no coincidence, in my opinion. A has-been at a mere 35, etc... Just seems appropriate. And a great song, nonetheless.
Think about it and listen:
The Gin Blossoms collaborate with Teenage Fanclub. Both have major Big Star influences, but very unique in their own way.
This is good.
