Those volcanic rocks are basalts of Quaternary age. (Source: Calif Div of Mines & Geology Bulletin #188 - 'Geology of the Fremont Peak and Opal Mountain Quadrangles' by T W Dibblee.) I know where you guys were hiking: north of Harper Valley and east of Fremont Peak in the vicinity of the Mud Hills and Rainbow Basin.
Judging by the video I'm guessing "Desert Dog Canyon" is to the west of Opal Mtn, and must run generally north/south (as everything drains that way out there)....that would put it in the middle of Black Mtn. I "googlearthed" it but can't quite figure out where it is. Hmmmmm time for another trip I suppose. Thanks for the great video.
