lewis cleale wasn't half-bad... if he sang all the lyrics like in the original production, he would be a great joe gillis. you can tell he has strong vocal cords AND can hit the high notes... if anything, HE would make a better norma desmond than petula :-)
I think they should have cast Mae West as Scarlett O'Hara, and also as Dorothy! I hope Petula Clark will play the part of every delusion I have ever had--and end (or continue) the embarrassing temper tantrums others have. Let's make music! But God forbid, joy! Of course Petula was using a handheld camera & tripped on the cords....totally her fault! DANG!

Everyone will have his/her favourite artist as Norma Desmond. The 2nd US tour suffered from cheap production values. A "toy" car detracted considerably from visual credibility. Glenn Close was fine as Norma Desmond, no question--but she lacked the depth of voice that Petula Clark was able to provide for this demanding part. Had Petula originated the role, the part would have been defined as hers for all time!
@MyTimeOutt Are you people deaf? SHE CAN'T SING!!!!!!! The lowered the key for her even further than Glenn Close, and she still can't hit the notes and goes off pitch every single note! How delusional are you?!?!?!
He twang is so annoying in this. Oh god, oh god, oh god. If I knew nothing about Petula Clark, and I sat in that theatre watching this same show, the first thing I'd say is, "When did Norma, crazy class act Norma, speak with a southern twang?" Awful. I think I'd look at something else than the stage. Probably the expressions on the countless faces who think they're going to be seeing a reinactment of the movie...
I have no idea what everyone is talking about. I saw this in Seattle a long time ago and Petula was amazing, She stopped the show at leat 2 times. And.....during her bows......she sang Downtown(a song I never really cared for) as an encore because of the raves and fan requests. As I understand, it was the only time she did this in her 2 week run.
Petuala suffered from a really really cheap production which Andrew L Webber gave her to try and ruin her - she had a lot of trouble with him as did other norma's including patti - the worst Norma heard thus far was Rita Moreno the best NOrma is without fail Diahann Carroll
I saw this with Petual, and with both understudies, Susan Emmerson, and Alice Lynn. Susan was ensational, one of the best i've seen, and I have seen most of them. Alice was like Carol Channing gone retarted. And then there was Petula. We left after this number.
I saw this tour and all I remember is coming away completely unmoved. And what was up with Petula's strange accent? I also recall "Too Much In Love to Care" being staged really cheesy.
Were people laughing when she was doing her impression of a beached whale? She's not doing that for laughs, she's supposed to be truly overwraught... Oh god.

I like Pet, but the Cockney Accent doesn't fit Norma Desmond!

Yep. I'm surprised there was never a pro-life picket line in the lobby.

What's with that strobe light effect for a "flicker" effect? It just looks like there's a light going out.

I was told that the Spanish production is a mess but this 2nd US Tour is dreadful...
Petula is so miscast as much as David Hasselhoff, XD

Now, now! David Hasselhoff would make a GREAT Norma.
