The Tyson of '86-'90 was on his way to maybe being the all time great, but post Douglas he was a flop. Tyson was better than Baer, but is no way one of the top 10 heavyweights.

He was still a top contender filling up rooms when he lost and he gained the title again when he was still young. It is a fact that Carnera fought for 11 rounds with a broken ankle, and did what every good fighter would have done, standing up until its last drop of energy was. Probably Carnera was completely DAZED, but had a lot of strength, so he stood up many times. This 2:39 seconds video instead is edited in way that makes the match looks as a constant fall.

saw the part of the movie when Baer completely embarrasses Carnera. of course, i expected the hollywood twist, but after watching this clip, i realized 2 things:
1. Baer really did hit hard

Baer was a class act, Carnera was in way over his head...you could watch the other rounds till you're blu in the face, Maxie starts taking him aprt long before the 11th.

Bert Sugar is being too harsh on Carnera. The American sportwriters always have spread innuendo and rumour about Carnera being a total fraud, but he was not. He was built on some set-up fights but most "well-managed" fighters are too. I think there was a lot of anti-Italian prejudice against Carnera, and he was singled out as being in "fixed fights" but he wasn't the only one. And it's bullshit to say the Sharkey KO was an "invisible" punch, it's clear as day on the film.

Baer was a class act, Carnera was in way over his head...you could watch the other rounds till you're blu in the face, Maxie starts taking him aprt long before the 11th.
Carnera certainly gave it his all, and he had lots of power, but he wouldn't last against a half-ranked middleweight today.

Bert Sugar is being too harsh on Carnera. The American sportwriters always have spread innuendo and rumour about Carnera being a total fraud, but he was not. He was built on some set-up fights but most "well-managed" fighters are too. I think there was a lot of anti-Italian prejudice against Carnera, and he was singled out as being in "fixed fights" but he wasn't the only one. And it's bullshit to say the Sharkey KO was an "invisible" punch, it's clear as day on the film.

This video is a travesty. This was not as one sided as this guy's editing would have you believe...that was the 11th Round for christs sake. Against a heavyweight who would crush most fighters today. Sure he wasn't a great, but the slur that Carnera was bum should be stopped...check out the 1st half of this fight...Carnera never took a count... had a great jab and had lots of heart.

Agreed. He actually was a decent boxer. If he'd have fought correctly, he'd have stuck the jab in Baer's face and moved, as Braddock did. In those days, though, a big man was expected to attack. When Primo attacked, he left himself wide open for Baer's right.
