u know, even in China, no one fully understand Tao De Jin coz it is written in ancient Chinese and its words r very compact. also, there r a lot of people try to explain Tao De Jin in China's long history and left a lot of interpretation version.

but just for example, the meaning of Tao in Tao Te Jing is the foundation to understand the whole piece, i thought so. atheists take Tao as the principle of world, or law of nature, some chinese christian pastors think Tao refer to God without doubt. What the author thought?
anyway, translation above is very beautiful, even better than some chinese modern translation.
