If I was queer, I would be highly offended by this show.
The subtext is that here's man who back in the day was outwardly homosexual (much like Paul Lynde at around the same time) and he's now going to tell you his "life story." As if that's all that's necessary insofar as "identity politics" is concerned regarding gays. As if the producers of the show said: "Great! The gays will love this!"
Talk about a condescending attitude!
I pity the people who paid money to see this crap.
@9162vb48 I'm not gay and I can't wait to see this DVD. As a child I thought that Charles Nelson Reilly was one of the funniest people in the world from his appearances on Match Game. I could care less about his sexuality. If the entire show is anything like the first 10 minutes shown here on youtube, then it's a fantastic piece of theater.
According to a Harvard Medical School study, 26.4% of all Americans are nuts -- (google "insanity in america" and see the article by John Chuckman)
No doubt this critical mass of insane people in America explains why this piece of ca-ca-dew-dew was presented to the American public.
If Albert Einstein rose from the dead and was featured in a one-man show across the street from "The Life oif Reilly," his show would close in a night, while CNR's ca-ca-dew-dew would draw throngs of people.
One would think that a great man was discussing the story of his life. That people had gathered from hither and yon to hear what pearls of wisdom would flow from the lips of such a man.
No, instead they came to hear narcissistic ca-ca-dew-dew. Why? Because in their wildest dreams they picture *themselves* standing in front of an audience making narcissistic ca-ca-dew-dew. And because they can't, they want to at least see someone else do it.
Get the shirt and the "free" DVD (you can't buy the DVD, it's promotional only lol). It's excellent. The story of the circus fire is heartbreaking. Watching this guy makes you wish he was your next door neighbor.
I was not expecting much from this film but I was WRONG! It was absolutely one of the best of the Philadelphia Gay and Lesbian film festival (PIGLFF). When it comes to DVD, be sure to rent or own it. It is an absolutely incredible and wonderful film. I am so glad to have seen it and sorry to hear that Charles Nelson Reilly passed away.
I had the pleasure of seeing "Save it for the stage" just a few weeks after Sept. 11, 2001 at the Irish Repertoire Theatre in NYC. There are many references to NYC landmarks/institutions and at one point he just stopped and said something like, "Isn't this just an incredible city?"
It was one of the most memorable evenings of my life. I wanted to see it again when it returned to NYC but did not. I would love to get a copy of this on DVD.
I had met him a few years ago when I went to see his one man show in Beverly Hills and me and my friend went backstage to meet with him, and I found him a charming man. He autographed my program which I still have to this day. I met him again a few months later at a taping of Hollywood Squares and he remembered me and we shared a few laughs backstage again. He will be missed.
