  • was Jesus cooler than Trent ?

  • I like this song.

  • @RottenDC1 COVER???? FUCKING COVER???????????? Seriously? This is the fucking original. Look it up. Trent Reznor won best rock song in 1995 for this song. CASH is the cover. And the Beside You in Time rendition will forever be the iconic version in my mind.

  • Johnny Cash is around 100x better.. sorry.

  • Love this song, and Nine Inch Nails but Johhny's version is better.

  • Quit arguing and enjoy the music, seriously.

  • johnny cash's vocals make this song even more beautiful

    good cover though

  • 666 people doesn't like it, I think it says something to us :D

  • @MrMyrddin27 NIN wrote the music for the video game Quake which was a very Satanic game. Don't believe me look it up and take it from someone who used to have the game and played it before I was saved. There's songs from the game on Youtube, also, the Nail gun box in the game had their logo on it. The same people that made Doom Make Quake.

  • @JdawgTheFirst Also, on I related note I think that NIN is a good musical band but I don't like the Satanic references in some of their music.

  • no more dislikes please!

  • this is an incredible song.

  • Lets keep the dislikes where they are

  • Why do people argue about the versions of the song. This is one of the best songs EVER and the fact that each of the versions (apart from the god awful leona lewis version) moves soo many different people should be enough for all of us to just appreciate Trents songwriting ability!

  • I can't believe Cash fans are as insecure as they were 2 years ago.

Most didn't even know that Trent wrote the song. lol They are so afraid of this version that they shit their pants that people think it's better. My guess is they're mainstream types that only hear things on mainstream radio and can only relate to narrow sensibilities.

and yeah this one wins hands down.

  • What happend Trent...

  • @Jerm357000 he's always been a miserable bugger- it's his whole thing.

Personally I prefer the Cash version, because I think he sounds more wounded when he sings it than Reznor. However, this is the original, and I love the song anyway.

I am not arguing, I am stating an opinion, if you don't share my opinion, that is your own business and frankly, I don't care.

  • I like both versions

  • I can't believe anyone could dislike this song. One of the best written ever. Why do people bother to let us know they dislike it anyway. Why be negative. Get a life!

  • Seriously, I love the NIN version, the Johnny Cash version and the Jeff Martin version, But to say any one does it better than Trent is wrong. I write and record my own music, (badly I'll admit and only for myself, as I suck at song writing) but to say that another person can put more emotion and heart into a song, other than the person that wrote it it wrong. This song is his, because it's from his circumstances and feelings that it has come into being. peace out...

  • People tend to be drawn to whichever version they happened to hear first and I love this version, but it doesn't affect me as emotionally as Johnny Cash's cover, which I heard first.

  • All i see is comments about how Johnny Cash has the reason to sing this(which he does) and people haveing the fucking balls and audacity to say that Trent should have nothing to do with this song. that he had no business writing, producing, perfecting and performing this song to what you see. to all you trolling and BLIND people out there, you have no idea what Trent has gone through. chances are the only reason why you know what Johnny went through was because of a particular movie.

  • Trent u Rule!

  • Sorry NIN, Johnny earned this song, not you.

  • just listen to the damn song! Geez! This arguing is meaningless...^_^

  • the audio from both versions is amazing... but i cried the first time i saw johnnys video....

  • @liquidmaco me too.......

  • @liquidmaco I CRY ERUYTIME

  • so good.....makes me want to cut myself. mmmm

  • Can we atleast all agree the leona lewis version is shit?

  • @Rangastanga23 Ew.. Leona Lewis doesn't even meet the prerequisites to attempt a song of this nature.

  • Sorry Johnny Cash... But Trent just fucking owned you...

  • @TheWollenstubby8th haha dude your fucking insane johnny cash all the way

  • Comment removed

  • this song gives me chills everytime i listen to it

  • If everyone complaining about different covers and listened to the song properly regardless of who sings it, when there is as much emotion in it as trent and johnny both gave it they deserve respect. Both versions are amazing, johnny obviously poured his heart into it at the end of his career and trent as he wrote it. Stop the bitching and learn to appretiate good music.

  • Yes john did do it better. But when a person sings a song like you must have we feel things a moment, a lost friend. Something so let him sing the song the way he did and if you don't want to hear it put on whatever song you like.

  • Oh hey, there's a whole bunch of shit on this comment page. Let's clean it up.

  • @KiteStrongart my thoughts exactly.

  • god great both songs are great

    god is great.

  • omg i LOVE this song!!!

  • @FALCON131001 please tell me you're a 10 year old chic but judging by the "falcon" name i'm assuming you're just a homo

  • @chosendnb fuck off troll

  • real hard to sing someone else's song. Its called someone else's song because it's someone else's song...... johny cash = lady gaga [madonna]

  • @chosendnb you are a fucking douche bag. He spent over half of his life making amazing music and music that no one else had ever done. Even trent reznor himself said that this no longer feels like his song because johnny cash did it better than anyone else could.

  • @paulyg11 you fucking retard if he did it better than anyone else could he would have wrote it himself dumbshit what would you all say if the roles were reversed and johnny wrote the song and trent covered it i think we all know i got a movie for you to watch on netflix its called exit thru the gift shop

  • @paulyg11 he started his career singing everyone else's songs why not finish that way you're prolly like all the other dumbshits that jumped on the johnny bandwagon because you watched a fucking movie

  • ok i tired of all this johnny cash and nin war to me honestly is both cause cash use this song to tell his life story and trent just wrote this song like all his other perfect song

    .

    RIP JOHNNY CASH

  • @neto304100 i'm glad he died because he ripped this song

  • @chosendnb well u know wat fuk u

  • @neto304100 so where do you think the real emotion of the song came from the person that "used' the song or the person that fucking wrote it lyrics come from the soul singing someone else's lyrics come from your throat or your greedy fucking eyes

  • @chosendnb i hate douchebag like you and johnny ask trent can he cover it and he said yes so shut fuck up you fucking asshole

  • @neto304100 "RIP" thats the perfect word to use

  • There are a lot of good songs written all the time. There only a few that fall into the GREAT category. Trent Reznor has done just that with "HURT". I love tunes that grab you and refuses to let go till the song is finished. Nine Inch Nails live performance is outstanding and only adds to the songs captivation.Johnny Cash claim his right to this song with a great arrangement. I know in my head that it's the same tune, but each has a ovation message and ending of its own.

  • Ah well, least people aren't trying to compare Trent with Leona Lewis , that would really piss people off lol .

  • Why the fuck are people listening to this, if they think cashs version is so much better... How about instead of being fucktards and complaining about the one you like best, you go and listen to it, enjoy it, and shut the fuck up.... Besides NIN wrote this song, you shouldn't be complaining at all because if it weren't for Trent, the song wouldn't even exist.

  • @Dragonmace1000 THANK YOU

  • cash forever but this is good too

  • @arturrrrrrrable really let me guess you compare jonas bros with the beatles also

  • @arturrrrrrrable stupid mfer its trents song really

  • Sorry to tell you the truth kids, but Johnny's version is superb.

  • Why do people argue about the two versions..

Trent Reznor wrote the song. NIN played it awesomely. Then Johnny Cash covered it like a boss. I love both of them.

  • @torterra13 Um...Trent IS NIN. He performs all the instruments when he records. He might have a guest, but he does everything. When they are live he has a band.

  • @torterra13 they argue about it cuz people assume cash came up with teh original, I think NINs version is far superior imo

  • Are all of you NIN vs Johnny Cash from memebase? Yeah? Well shut the fuck up you retards. Doesn't matter who made the song better. It's all personal preference.

    NIN did it better anway.

  • @PKKTroll you kinda nullified you're own point by adding that at the end (ex.) If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all you fucking retarded moron stupid cock sucking faggot get it it was still the right answer though

  • @chosendnb Shut the fuck up you cock sucking bitch. Go bitch to someone who cares.

  • The part when he sings 'And you can have it all, my empire of dirt' and the crowd sings with him gives me chills all the time.everytime.

  • Ehhhh. I think Cash's version and Nine Inch Nails' version are like two totally different songs. Both amazing. Neither one is better than the other.

  • To be completely honest, I've never really liked Cash or NIN until i found their versions of Hurt.

I think NIN's version of it captures the pain of going through a rough and dark patch in your life, where as i think Cash's version show's the regret of looking back on all the mistakes everyone makes throughout their lives. Of course i could be completely wrong, but that's just what i get from it.

  • @Shaggy53193 That's what I got out of the two different songs as well. In essence, they're both completely different songs that uses almost the same exact lyrics.

  • @snakepit000 almost the same exact lyrics really really you all are a bunch of dumb f@#ks

  • @chosendnb Interesting, care to elaborate?

  • @Shaggy53193 I agree, as a 35 yr old, NIN's version hits home for me, listened to it as a teenager but I also love Cash's version of it, although completely different. Both evoke different feelings but I think the point is that both are very powerful in their own right.

  • same song... really raw emotion... watch?v=PfT3VRfij24

  • i feel johnny cash has more emotion behind the song. he tells his story through it. so hands down johnny cash.

  • @mralec1010 Trent tells ALWAYS his story.

Every Nine Inch Nails' song is about his story, and about the UNIVERSAL STORY OF THE MAN.

  • I love Cash but I think NIN did a better job with this personally, but I know its just that, personal preference. Both versions are good, and if you're gonna cover something, you gotta give it new life, which I think Cash did, which shows how good he is, but I think this was one of NIN's better songs, which is timeless. Either way, people need to stop bitching and start listening to the music instead, true artists aren't better or worse than another, just different.

  • @silencesummer Wise words......... :)

  • Cash made this song a thousand times better. Sorry but its fact.

  • @Darkwolfproduction1 you're a fag sorry but its fact.

  • @chosendnb Wow, a internet tough guy. Why don't you go back to jacking off in your moms basement. Its ok. we know you think your so tough, but if you were you would walk to my house at 4212 Ocean avenue Maine. Come find me pussy boy.

  • they ruined it :/

  • @G0ldenM0nkey They wrote it

  • @G0ldenM0nkey they made the song, cash stole it

  • A band called Hundredth just recently covered this song, Check it out search "Hundredth Hurt"

  • its so weird how theres so many comments saying the Cash version of this song landed you here. who are you people? welcome anyway

  • It makes me sad that people actually think Cash wrote this. Trent wrote this in 1994 for The Downward Spiral album, and the original is personally my favorite version. It's so personal to Trent, and what he experienced that compelled him to write it in the first place. Cash's cover is also good, but it's less personal, so it doesn't strike me as close to home. This is by far in the top list for my favorite songs of all time, by my favorite artist of all time.

  • Trent said it himself "[he] embodied this song way beyond expectations, he sang it like if it wasn't even a cover. Almost like I wrote it just for him personally. It blew my mind!" Trent sings it amazingly Cash sings it amazingly, it the fact that both can sing it to its full meaning because they have lived it. I love both versions, personaly. It's beyond words how amazing this song spoke to me.

  • goosebumps, anyone else?

  • Johnny Cash's version is so much more beautiful and suiting and perfect. This sounds like a different song, more emo-kid than baeautiful, imo.

  • @Halgha Well he made it, it's easy enough to copy someones song like cash did.

  • I personally like this version and Johnny Cas's version...You would have to have lived during the Johnny Cash days of glory to understand his ability to feel this song's intense emotions...Just as Reznor has in this live version...they have both lived the song

  • @Johnny56Mac and that is Cash not Cas

  • good

  • FUCK'N CHRIS BARNES SUCKS ASS, CASH FTW

  • Apparently Nine Inch Nails Hurt there shit compared to johnny cash

  • when u hit 70, like j cash, please sing this song BETTER than him,,,youtube is waiting, for 'your' version~~`

  • @veedubyuh82 no i think i'd just write my own fucking song to express how i feel

  • @chosendnb so, where's YOUR 'fucking' song, to express how u feel? pffttt...

  • reznor,invented it, but cash PERFECTED IT~~~

  • and also just F.Y. fucking I., neither johnny cash NOR NIN wrote this song

  • @knomperino the lead singer of nin trent did write this for his gf

  • @knomperino Reznor wrote this song.

  • They are both very good but absolutly nobody can disrespect johnny cash he is a music icon and the fact that he was 70 when he sang his version simply blows me away all of you talking shit couldnt even sing half as good as him

  • WOW JOHNNY CASH SUCKS!

  • @KZiggy4 Before you criticize someone can you please actually do a bit of research on just what Johnny Cash has done. This song is good yes, It was their one hit wonder but Johnny Cash absolutely destroyed it with his performance, Remember he done it when he was 70 so please show some respect and learn your facts before you criticize someone without knowing just who you are talking about. R.I.P. Johnny Cash.

  • @dabomb5521 fuck you and k ziggy

  • @dabomb5521 one hit wonder you're telling us to do research

  • you relly dont know good music

  • @KZiggy4 Never, and I mean never, comment your views and opinions on music legends again - in any format or any location. Your views are s**t and worthless.

  • It's so depressing clicking this video and only seeing Cash comments, Reznor wrote it, Reznor owned it.

  • i sang this song for my music practicle and i passed because of it

  • Nothing compares to cash :P

  • this is great, but Cash killed it

  • Leona Lewis is Cowell Manufactured shite Doll .... if this song is taken from NIN and JC I Give up !!!!!

  • Both versions are Excellent, but it was especially fitting with Johnny Cash more experience .

  • It's not Rocket Science is it The Original is a classic and the "Cover" is also a Cover at the end of the day the SONG is A CLASSIC SONG if you dont like it fuck off and listen to X Factor!!!

  • there was a freakin 720p version that was beautiful. I guess it was taken down

  • I was drawn to this song by Johnny Cash. I had to see and hear the NIN version beautiful! Both versions!

  • Who the fuck is Leona Lewis? And Johnny cash is legendary...but this is NIN's song and always will be

  • come check out the NIN dubstep remix we just released ;;;0)

  • 240p lololol

  • My freshman year I did a report comparing the two songs. I still to this day remain undecided on which version I love more. One thing I do know, though, is that this song is one of the best works of art to ever be a part of this planet.

  • "I pop the video in, and wow ... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps ... Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore." - Trent Reznor on Johnny Cash's cover.

  • Love this version better then with the band.

  • All i see is people arguing who's version is better. Who gives a damn, talk about how good the song actually is, share a coke with whoever and be happy.

  • I think both NIN and Cash's version are equally as fantastic.

  • Well, if Trent Reznor never wrote this song then Johnny Cash would have never been able to cover it, but they're both fantastic any way.

  • It's "it hurts" vs "it hurt" - if you get what I'm saying. Both versions are epic in their own way.

  • Johnny Cash's version is Great so is this it was there song first just it worked better for cash bc he sings the song months after his wife dies then he dies a couple weeks later both are great though

  • Johnny Cash is way better than this garbage

  • Cash all the way:p

  • I love NIN but Cash made this song work way better!

  • @sinfulsolutionz I love Johnny Cash, but I do not agree.

  • @sinfulsolutionz You should say, I find it better cause people like me will disagree.

  • @mathijssegers what the f@#k does that even mean you f@#king d bag

  • @chosendnb I see you have quite the vocabulary there, It's pretty simple english but here, for you.

ME NO RIKEY NO MEANS HE NO RIKEY.

Don't force opinions, also I wonder why you're swearing over the internet towards me, And why are you cencoring yourself, that makes no sense.

Well I guess in overall you wont make much sense except for some nice burger flipping job.

  • @sinfulsolutionz you gotta be the stupidest mfer on the planet really

  • @sinfulsolutionz i wish i knew you so i could HURT you for real

  • All I can say is wow, to be honest I was not expecting the NIN to be any good at all. Man was i wrong this version is absolutely beautiful.

  • Interesting. This is the first time I've heard the NiN version. Knowing the Cash version as well as I do, I didn't think I'd get much out of this but shit it's good.

  • My first concert was NIN. When I snuck to the floor from the upper levels, I was greeted with this amazing song. I can recall feeling the raw emotion from both Trent and the crowd. It was mutual respect. From the brilliance of this musician to the fans who raised their lighters and phones, it was obvious that this man had touched these people, knew who they were, knew what they felt better than anyone else. I was one of them. We hurt, yes. We all hurt so much. But Trent accepts us. He hurts too.

  • LOOK AT THOSE FLIP PHONES! Blast from the past!

  • saw an interview in which trent reznor said that the johnny cash version made him sad because it was the sound of hurt becoming cash's and not his because his version is that good

  • NIN birthed the song, Cash married it...

  • @Malmignatte

Shit. Better than that. NIN birthed it, Cash married, and took it to his grave. Woe betide the next person who tries to cover it. They'll be standing in the shadow of the colossus.. Even Reznor's version sounds weak by comparison. Cash brought an intensity to it that I don't think anyone can match. It's almost like he knew he was going to die soon after.

  • I prefer Cash's version the best.

  • kill greed

  • @fantabulousk I will start by saing I love the johnny cash version but are you so ignorant to music that you didnt even check who wrote this song before posting your ill informed views. NIN wrote this song about self harm, suicide, addiction and forgiveness and johnny cash in all his glory saw something of himself in it and COVERED it. Neither artists had any disrespect about the situation with even the NINsaying that Cash sang the shit of it. that is all

  • @markyc1988 Omg, stupid in person!

  • Stop fucking arguing and listen to what the men are trying to say for fuck sake.

  • @TheOssumPawesome The only disrespect to Cash would be saying the actual song was in some way flawed, by tune/lyrics, which were the things left the same after everything else was destroyed. It might insult the HOMAGE of Johnny Cash, but I don't think he minds in his current state, and he's the only one who has the right to be upset. Nine Inch Nails have no right, because it isn't THEIRS. Doing such a terrible job of covering this song is way more disrespectful than ANY criticism.

  • @fantabulousK Johnny Cash copied this song fool NIN wrote it !!!
