So is China Forbes no longer the lead singer of the group? I purchased tickets to see Pink Martini on Thursday night and they don't have anything saying there is a special guest. Some shows say there is a special guest "Storm Large" and others show other guests as well. I am wondering if China Forbes will be there.
@333ANGELLOVE - Who ist the black girl with this famous voice? I think, she is making the performance of this song absolutley great. This live-Version is much better than the normal version.
They all look like a bunch of lawyer's and attorney's and legal assistants that never took to musicprofessionally until they made money coming out of their asses and fundedtheir own cause.....which was to play music as a vocation!! Classic case!.... Thereare tons of musicians like this out there that don't want to strugglewith barely making a living!!! So they get into a career that makes them theDOUGH and then they live their dream of being stars and touring all over the world!!!
Excellent tune, although I am surprised that we didn't hear Eugene say, "You won't see me." (You might have had to have been alive in December of 1965, or shortly thereafter, to recognize the reference.)
I love this song cause it tells a story that is realistic. Also, it tells something that not a lot of people would be willing to talk about. The music is really beautiful. In the end this is what music is all about. If it brings a smile to your face then it's all good.
@jazzeriah Maybe if you had to play a song as much as Pink Martini has had to play this one, you would be looking for ways to make it more interesting as well.
As for the lyrics... maybe the point is that the "forgettable story" is actually quite so unremarkable? Personally, I love the banality of the lyrics... it contrasts well with the elaborate crescendos of the song.
This song has an instant groove and great chord changes, and what a great band. But the lyrics are absolutely horrendous and describe a completely forgettable story that I have no idea why anyone would want to recount to anyone. With a totally different set of lyrics, this song would be five-star.

i'm sorry, but these lyrics are terrible. it's seems like such a waste of talent, a wonderfully huge band backing up a pointless, rambling story. If music is still a reflection of the society it's created in then we're in trouble.

I think most people like the idea behind Pink Martini, but it's overly stylized. This isn't "cool" music and you're not cool for liking it. It's more like bad TV - turn it off or it'll rot your brain. This is nothing more than whimsical music fronted by a(nother) pretty face. I've got nothing against a pretty face, but this is too obvious. And while I do like the lead vocalist (she's...okay) the backing vocalist is clearly more talented...yet you can ignore this fact. Pink Martini sucks.
truedude- I am so NOT cool. But is fine with me. Yes, this is very stylized. To make things ever worse, I LOVE when Pink Martini sings in Italian, french, spanish, chinese and portugese on other songs- they have a retro feeling that I personally like. The background singer is fantastic ( no doubt about it)...but here is something even worse- the song makes me smile. Sorry!

I do not want to get into an intellectual debate about music or artistic criticism when history shows how irrelevant the criticism might be ...I guess we should all just listen to whatever you deem acceptable!! I live in Seattle and I can say without prevarication that i really hate almost everything about Portland, including Pink Martini. Forget about the Seattle music scene...Queensryche, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Modest Mouse, Heart, Jimi Hendrix, etc. I'm not comparing the two. On it's own, Pink Martini is simply awful music. No soul, no heart, just...crap. "I said hello...Eugene?" Ugh. This is a 1000 times worst than Diana Krall. Please stop making this crap. Please.
We just saw them (for the second time) in Tucson AZ last night. China is looking great after having her baby 7 months ago. They were full of energy and put on an awsome show. Love that trumpet player!
I saw them last Saturday at the Hollywood Bowl! They're awesome! Second time I saw them (saw them 2 years ago at the Bowl) and they just keep getting better!
I like them, but can't believe they sell millions of records, very few artist sell that amount apart from U2 Jz Coldplay. In the UK I would be suprised if they sold more than a few thousand of each album.
QUITE POSSIBLY THE BEST SONG IVE HEARD IN A LONG TIME!!!
My name is Eugene... and I dont think there has EVER been a pop-culture song with my (our) name in the title (let alone, the main verse!)
I am in love with this band now. Gorgeous Glamazon lead-singer, full orchestra, sassy black back-up singer, tickled ivory, chillaxing bass and drums, subtle brass and thrumming strings!
LOVE IT! It is now my new ring-tone and voicemail!
Thanks, writergal49, I assumed there was a goodly helping of humour therein. Haven't been to Eugene, OR (of course have heard of it) wonder if it would feel like coming home, being from the high Northeast, the weather can't be much worse there than here (Newfoundland). Cheers.
I'm pretty sure she does in Pink Martini's upcoming albums. They have a new one coming out in October I believe, and they've already started another one. When I saw them perform their new songs she was singing front.
Really love your voice , my name is Eugene , check me out on my channel , [ mrgeetarist ]

Wo. This is terrible. How sad cause their cover of Sympathique is great. Oh god she's awful.

I would like to know with the amount of band members how they make any money.
gertaldo 2 years ago
Well they sold out the Hollywood Bowl this weekend and have sold a few million records so I suppose that helps.
ls92101 2 years ago
I like them, but can't believe they sell millions of records, very few artist sell that amount apart from U2 Jz Coldplay. In the UK I would be suprised if they sold more than a few thousand of each album.
gertaldo 2 years ago
Don't think they're in it for the money.
GwenBsMule 2 years ago
Obviously not, else they wouldn't have has many band members.

LONG LIVE EUGENES!!! Thank you Pink Martini!

Are the lyrics supposed to be blocky?

Yes, on the paper you'd see an extra little bar just for that extra little bit.

Thanks, writergal49, I assumed there was a goodly helping of humour therein. Haven't been to Eugene, OR (of course have heard of it) wonder if it would feel like coming home, being from the high Northeast, the weather can't be much worse there than here (Newfoundland). Cheers.

yah, i thought so too. amazing background singer...does she ever sing front?
Hawalli1 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure she does in Pink Martini's upcoming albums. They have a new one coming out in October I believe, and they've already started another one. When I saw them perform their new songs she was singing front.
