What if the massive amount of gravitational force in the large masses of the universe actually begin to repel each other in some way once they reach a certain distance apart? Oops! I wrote that before I watched the video XD I just think that it's logical to infer that there are two sides to forces. Maybe this could also mean that there is some sort of space-time drop-off around the edge of the universe where the acceleration is happening? That would need some serious explaining, but it's just as possible of an explanation as anything else. It would definitely shake stuff up a bit.
I know that particules have a life expectancy. Could it be possible that gravitons would begin to disintegrate, leading the gravitational force to be weaker and the universe to accelerate faster and faster?
When was it discovered that the universe was expanding rather than pulling together? I thought it was already pulling together as we speak. If this is true, this changes my mind about everything that I knew about Dark Matter.

By looking at galaxies of different distances, you're looking back different amounts of time. So scientists can gauge the speed of galaxies at different periods of time in the universe, and correlations will show galaxies that are closer to us ( in both space and time ) are accelerating faster than those distant from us. Except Quasars, they're effing weird.

Could it be that the original mass that exploded (assuming the big bang theory is correct) was in a void so large that what we are able to see with the Hubble is the after effect moving outward yet not contacting anything static or moving toward us in any fashion.
Lets take one concept to heart here. Although the information here is best guess, it is not conclusive. So far there is a vast repository of failed ideas and the fact that we have gotten it all wrong at a fundamental basis still exists. Example - if the answer is the universe as it is, lets say that mathmatically equals 42, there are multiple ways to create that answer. The actual way the answer was created could still be eluding us. But I do like the commentary and hope it continues.

IMO. I believe the universe is in an early stage and will eventually slow down allowing gravity to pull galaxies together again. Just using the big bang theory. Dark matter being the residual force from the mass explosion. Since space is a vacuum the after effects of this explosion has nowhere else to go but away from its origination. Because space is a vacuum should there be affter affects? I dunno :S
@TheAthol Dark Energy and Dark Matter are two different things tho. Dark Matter simply is non-visible matter, such as far spread hydrogen, brown dwarves, rogue planets, etc.

I can't wait to see the 2012 video, but something that kinda concerns me is the sun itself. With just the knowledge of high school astrology, I learned that a star at around the mass of the sun would live about 13 billion years. But what happens when it dies? hasn't the earth itself been around longer than 13 billion years? and if so, what happened when it died in the past, could this be one of the many reasons for a major ice age on earth?
The age of the universe is about 13.7 billion years. The earth itself is, IIRC, about 5.4 billion years old. If the sun had died, then the Earth would have experienced far, far worse than an ice age.
the earth is aprox 4.5 billion years old. the sun will evidently turn into a red giant and wipe us out but we'll be dead before this takes place.. i believe it takes billions of years. plate tectonics has some emphasis over long term glaciation. continents drift too high for glaciers to recede, heat gets trapped currents are controlled as well as volcanic arcs. The concentration of CO2 as well is a determining factor.

huh i always assumed that the universe was expanding and i thought that was commonly accepted by the experts. didnt even know i was ahead of the curve ! but seriously, maybe the force of the big bang is such that it defeats gravity?
The hubble deep field image was taken over 3 days was it? And look what we got from that! But five years? Man, I can't wait to see what comes from that!
How long have they noticed this acceleration? I mean if the universe is some 15 billion years old and we've only observed it for say 10 years I'd say to wait a bit longer... but that's just me. Also, are there any other universities doing similar experiments? Dark Energy is something that has always intrigued me.

What we don't know is if this acceleration was constant thoughout the history of the universe or if it was stronger at some times than others.
I've always been curious about this since the discovery of accelerating inflation... does this throw off our calculations of the age of the universe? Could the universe possible be younger than we think? Or, do we have an idea of approximately when deceleration ceased?
This is very exciting as this opens up the possibility that we may be slightly off track of what gravity is... perhaps what even time itself is!

It doesn't throw off our calculations for the age of the universe, but it does the geometry. Accelerating universes (especially those whose accelerations change with time) can play havoc on our understanding of the geometry of the universe.
If the acceleration is not isotropic, does that mean that the acceleration of the expansion is caused by gravity acting differently than we thought it should or a strange force?
Don't know. Whether it's a misunderstanding of gravity or due to some energy remains to be uncovered. This wouldn't have anything to do with whether it's isotropic or not though.

I found the part about our possible lack of understanding of gravity very interesting. I guess gravity is the one force that we understand the least. Are you saying that at very large scales, gravity could act differently than it does at (relatively) shorter distances? So perhaps we would have three scales to unify, the very small (quantum), the medium, and the very large (universe)?
When I envision the universe, I see it as a sea of probability locii, each one representing a "particle". The locii are all part of fields (all "particles" have a "field") that extend to the edge of the universe. All are connected at the edge, since all originiated from the same kernel. What gets "bent" by the "mass" of a "particle" is the field(s) of these "particles". When they get close enough, the locii try to merge and we see this as gravity (merge to a lower energy state).

Gravity is a force like none other because it only pulls. There is no pushing involved. But what if this force does push but in a different way? What if the massive amount of gravitational force in the large masses of the universe actually begin to repel each other in some way once they reach a certain distance apart? Maybe this could also mean that there is some sort of space-time drop-off around the edge of the universe where the acceleration is happening? By looking at galaxies of different distances, you're looking back different amounts of time. So scientists can gauge the speed of galaxies at different periods of time in the universe, and correlations will show galaxies that are closer to us ( in both space and time ) are accelerating faster than those distant from us. Still... it's just a bit unsettling. All this Dark Energy business. It feels like it's a mistake everyone is making regarding the same subject. And that thus we have given it form by naming it, and accepting it as truth.

It may even be a "modification" of the light due to distance that makes it look like redshift and acceleration and all that.

God was never born. space goes on forever. 1000 years is one day to God. he created the universe and (everything that is in it) i have a feeling there is alot of crazy shit out there. look at all the crazy shit that lives on earth. organisms living in acid. i have a feeling God put all of us far apart so we never meet for a good reason. we might breed ourselves to death on their planet, then they will be in our way like our own animals and trees are in our way.

Could it be that the original mass that exploded (assuming the big bang theory is correct) was in a void so large that what we are able to see with the Hubble is the after effect moving outward yet not contacting anything static or moving toward us in any fashion.

Lets take one concept to heart here. Although the information here is best guess, it is not conclusive. So far there is a vast repository of failed ideas and the fact that we have gotten it all wrong at a fundamental basis still exists. Example - if the answer is the universe as it is, lets say that mathmatically equals 42, there are multiple ways to create that answer. The actual way the answer was created could still be eluding us. But I do like the commentary and hope it continues.

IMO. I believe the universe is in an early stage and will eventually slow down allowing gravity to pull galaxies together again. Just using the big bang theory. Dark matter being the residual force from the mass explosion. Since space is a vacuum the after effects of this explosion has nowhere else to go but away from its origination. Because space is a vacuum should there be affter affects? I dunno :S

@TheAthol Dark Energy and Dark Matter are two different things tho. Dark Matter simply is non-visible matter, such as far spread hydrogen, brown dwarves, rogue planets, etc.

I can't wait to see the 2012 video, but something that kinda concerns me is the sun itself. With just the knowledge of high school astrology, I learned that a star at around the mass of the sun would live about 13 billion years. But what happens when it dies? hasn't the earth itself been around longer than 13 billion years? and if so, what happened when it died in the past, could this be one of the many reasons for a major ice age on earth?

The age of the universe is about 13.7 billion years. The earth itself is, IIRC, about 5.4 billion years old. If the sun had died, then the Earth would have experienced far, far worse than an ice age.

the earth is aprox 4.5 billion years old. the sun will evidently turn into a red giant and wipe us out but we'll be dead before this takes place.. i believe it takes billions of years. plate tectonics has some emphasis over long term glaciation. continents drift too high for glaciers to recede, heat gets trapped currents are controlled as well as volcanic arcs. The concentration of CO2 as well is a determining factor.

How long have they noticed this acceleration? I mean if the universe is some 15 billion years old and we've only observed it for say 10 years I'd say to wait a bit longer... but that's just me. Also, are there any other universities doing similar experiments? Dark Energy is something that has always intrigued me.

The acceleration was discovered in the late nineties by two independent experiments: CODE (which looked at the cosmic microwave background) and a survey that looked at type 1a supernovae. Both groups found evidence for this acceleration.
What we don't know is if this acceleration was constant thoughout the history of the universe or if it was stronger at some times than others.

I've always been curious about this since the discovery of accelerating inflation... does this throw off our calculations of the age of the universe? Could the universe possible be younger than we think? Or, do we have an idea of approximately when deceleration ceased?
This is very exciting as this opens up the possibility that we may be slightly off track of what gravity is... perhaps what even time itself is!

It doesn't throw off our calculations for the age of the universe, but it does the geometry. Accelerating universes (especially those whose accelerations change with time) can play havoc on our understanding of the geometry of the universe.

Don't know. Whether it's a misunderstanding of gravity or due to some energy remains to be uncovered. This wouldn't have anything to do with whether it's isotropic or not though.

if those dark energy sources are , as you say, maybe not present in same proportions everywhere in the univers, then we should be able to locate the mother-source, who is driving these energies to accelerate the univers?? right?!
that would mean that: u can draw a picture of all the sources of energy, and then draw a line connecting them all together.. and where the lines cross.. would be the epic center.. or w/e..

I found the part about our possible lack of understanding of gravity very interesting. I guess gravity is the one force that we understand the least. Are you saying that at very large scales, gravity could act differently than it does at (relatively) shorter distances? So perhaps we would have three scales to unify, the very small (quantum), the medium, and the very large (universe)?

When I envision the universe, I see it as a sea of probability locii, each one representing a "particle". The locii are all part of fields (all "particles" have a "field") that extend to the edge of the universe. All are connected at the edge, since all originiated from the same kernel. What gets "bent" by the "mass" of a "particle" is the field(s) of these "particles". When they get close enough, the locii try to merge and we see this as gravity (merge to a lower energy state).
