  • I saw this movie in my American Lit class and I remember the tears streaming down my face during this scene.

  • This clip is so incredible. It goes to show that appearances are deceiving. One might think their mother scrutinizes them and wishes they were a better child or more successful, but it's wrong. Her mother loves her and to hear it said so beautifully by a character that we thought was thoughtless is shockingly touching. Brilliant ending: "Must be born this way.".

  • I cry every time, especially with wine lol

  • I just remember seeing the part where she drowned the baby when I was real little, it traumatized me it was so horrible, the only part I ever saw.

  • I love the piano teacher randomly playing Humoresque at the end of the argument.

  • "i see you"......

when i saw avatar, the first thing i thought of was this movie <3

  • This scene is the perfect example of how it takes an entire scene to pull together a purpose in order for a message to bear the beauty of its truth. I was going to stop watching because I found it a tad boring to begin with, but the ending gave the entire thing meaning. Life in a nutshell if we manage to get our perspectives in line with our purpose.

  • @SDupe44 yup!

  • This scene sums up my relationship with my mother perfectly! I have had this very argument with her a number of times.

I'm surprised no one's commented about similarities between the scene and their lives!

  • Mommy..

  • And... cue the tears. this is such a powerful scene. One of the reasons I love this movie so much.

  • Am i the only so sick that there's rarely any Asian actors in films anymore? Am not even Asian and this bugs me.The only time i do see them is when there playing the stereotypical roles.

  • @legallyinsane456 yeah you got it dawg but its slowly getting better

  • shouldnt they rename joy luck club to catfight?

  • @LePetitGrosse ...how is that appropriate at all? smh.

  • @asianlolwut well, the entire movie seems to be different girls from different family bitching about each others.. so cat fight although not politically correct, is appropriate

  • aww i lamost cried... i know that feeling when you feel like your not good enough

  • @vlissa2000 yea, society makes us feel bad. sigh, but learn to love yourself

  • In tears!!!

  • @isibella46 Actually, I hated Waverly in the book as well.

  • what did the mom say this whole time?

  • i love this part of the clip, especially when suyuan and june share a "moment" :) sort of reminds me that people actually care about quality, instead of selfishness and competition

  • I'm reading this in my English class. It's a very good book so far.

  • 6 people took the best quality crab.

  • the part that shreds at my heart that get the tears flowing is when the mother saids " I see You, I see You" it catches my heart everytime because i too just want to be seen we all just want to be seen

  • I lived this movie!! Amy Tan rocks!!!!

  • love this clip! clever, calling it "best quality clip"!

  • June not like Waverly...June not a bitch

  • @negvar lmaoooo epic comment hahahah

  • I was watching this movie in Chicago and when it ended everyone in the theater was crying and sobbing both the men and women. I've never seen so many men cry at any point in time of my life, that's how touching the movie was.

  • @1bush053 beautiful story

  • I'm DYING to get this soundtrack. The music is MOVING!

  • Waverly can act like such a bitch sometimes....

  • @thetruthteller415 ...because the Karate Kid is not around to slap her back into shape if she steps out of line!!

  • They chose beautiful Chinese women to play the roles .

  • @kkgirl300 Actually, the main characters are made up of Vietnamese and Japanese also.

  • @johnadamsyt Well whatever race they are , they're beautiful .

  • This is such a good book ;.

  • Omg it's Mulan!!

  • 7:05 Avatar and Lady Gaga ripped off Amy Tan

  • The best movie ever. Such lessons in this movie. I thought about this movie when I was making the decision to leave a really bad relationship. THe part when An Me is telling her daughter to know her worth. I love it!!

  • I love this film so much. This scene is one so many of us wish to experience with our own parents, or relative, or closest friend. So sad that we don't say words from the heart that others desperately wish to hear.

  • I'm part Asian myself though not Chinese. My blood is Japanese. This scene is extremely poignant! Every parent and child should sit down and watch this scene. Father to son, father to daughter, mother to son, mother to daughter.

And 6 people don't like this clip? Either it's six people who don't see their child, or six people who don't know mom/dad sees them, or it's six people who should just explode on the spot! :P

  • Great, now I'm freaking crying at my desk. *sniff sniff*

  • too sad ....

  • @VajzeFierakee Yep!

  • Must. Not. Cry... Best quality movie!

  • Amy Tan is a genius.

  • The producer just made another one called 'Year of the Fish,' based on the Chinese cinderella fairy-tale. I almost like it more than this one!

  • I wish she'd said, "Mom, you couldn't have said all that nice stuff about me at the dinner table???"

  • @RLviddy haha. very true :)

  • Yes, she's do one who voiced over for Mulan.

  • @jbgiant2003 Don't forget Dr. Aki from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

  • If you get through this scene without crying then there's something wrong with you

  • June's mom looks almost like my mom with the intense strong gaze.

  • im a straight guy but this movie still made me cry like a bitch

  • wow, 7 min of youtube made me cry.

  • I love this Movie...

    I hardly cry...

I would watch this movie every time Im sick and I cry my snot off....

I've lost count of how many times I would watch this movie.... :'(

    LOVED IT!!

  • '"Beauty is truth, truth beauty,"--- that is all.

Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.' John Keats

  • I must've watched this movie 20 times and without fail I cry every time I watch this scene.

  • "Because you have best quality heart" A fountain of tears..:'[

  • This story and the 2 faces were probably the saddest, I pretty much cried in all the stories..

  • @fudgedogbannana I didn't like it when I first saw it in the 90s. But it's worth seeing again, man. It's not a chick flick. It's about families. Anyone can relate. Open up your mind.

  • @fudgedogbannana - Why, because there aren't explosions and boobs and witty one-liners every five seconds?

  • my older bro and my late grandmother cried at the end of the movie.

  • "Waverly took best quality Crab, You took worst.... because you have best quality heart." ....wow... best line.

  • I've always loved that scene. I strongly felt that was scene was the whole definition for the movie!

  • @videodude23 yea, i love it. It's unconditional love from a mom to daughter--however way she turns out, her mom will love her.

And it's "hope" for a better life, but not "expecting" it. :)

  • RIGHT! The instructor was in Tremors with Kevin Bacon hahaha. I thought he looked familiar... Old Victor Wong.

  • @rrrevan, yes I sure did, did you?

  • ...This just made me cry so much. I'm not Chinese, but I completely understand the cultural gap that comes when your parent's are immigrants. This was such a touching scene. Thanks for uploading.

  • I love waverly's mom that bitch said "火辣, 火辣" she is a trip;))))

  • @fagUrrific Err, I think she actually says "好啦, 好啦" as in "Alright, alright...."

  • @AAMLfan 谢谢 AAMLfan,听起来你是对的;)))) . . . still after your revelation, it is no longer AS funny;(((

  • @fagUrrific lol! Woops, 對唔住! Sorry for ruining that line for you! :P

  • @AAMLfan 哈哈哈哈;))) . . . .我很好!!

  • God, her acting was INTOLERABLE in Street Fighter!

  • Im reading the book for my English class and this is the first clip of the actual movie I've ever seen! It's REALLY good and goes perfectly by the book...

  • Oh my gosh, this is the story of my life.

Tears in my eyes every single time.

    Love this movie.

    Love this scene.

  • @bemylover646

Grown up in an asian family?

  • OMG'sh, I never saw this movie but I can tell I would cry fountains.

  • i just love this film. i watched this when i was a kid.

  • I named my daughter after "Waverly" Love that name. Not the character.

  • Sob.

  • I hate Waverly.

  • After reading the book it just makes so much sense- READING is awesome

  • I love the line, "You have best quality heart." It shows that her mother values what's really important.

  • @Asenueh I agree. A good parent loves their child, no matter what kind of outside success they can or cannot achieve.

  • is it really necessary to bring this up at dinner poor girl

  • @mami2cool I always thought it was inappropriate that she brought it up in the first place, yea--"some ppl think freelance means working for free". It wasn't necessary. But it created a great scene lol.

It shoulda just been worded differently. More naturally.

  • The lines are perfect. The acting is perfect. It's just right.

I love how her mom affirms to her: 'Not expect, just hope.'

She wants the best for her daughter, but loves her no matter what her daughter does (or DOESN'T do).

  • So touching... unconditional love from a mother. The way it should be :)

  • a chick flick that actually was a great movie

  • This movie made me appreciate my parents.

  • One of the best films ever made.

  • I LOVE Watching This!!

I love watching it especialy when Im Sick!

I Cry and still watch it the next Day

I've seen it like 5x already!

  • I LOVE

    THis MOVIE!

    I LOVE IT 5x

I cant get tier of it!

I Would watch it like every time that Im sick!!

  • Wwweeeelllllllll three peoples hands slipped

  • THAT BITCH!!!

  • You have style that nobody can teach ;o)

  • this is the only long scene i get to watch..the rest of the movie ..where is it??

  • This movie is amazing! I don't know why but I feel like I'm very much like June. In my first relationship, I was like Rose, but I changed. Now, I feel like I'm like June now. My family is very disappointed in me. They thought I would be very successful but I'm not and I always seem to be the one who takes the "worst crab." My sister is definitely Waverly. I wish I had a family member or a friend who could "see me."

  • meh...i wna slap waverly every time i watch this clip or read this part in the book...she's so evill...

but this clip is the most touching

  • aww i actually like cried! The "I see you" thing is from plenty of things, its really a cliche.

  • I love this movie~ And the music xDDD

  • this scene just makes me bawl..lol

  • my favorite scene! great music by Rachel Portman.

  • Oh my gosh it's Mulan! The Disney princess Mulan but real! And she's kind of playing the same role. I mean June feels like a disapointment and that she's not good enough sort of like how Mulan felt.

Mulan felt like she couldn't do anything right and June felt like she couldn't be good enough.

No wonder why Miss. Ming-Na Wen did so well in Mulan she had pratice in this movie.

  • wow waverly is sucha bitchh

  • This whole kitchen talk really hits close to home for me. This whole book does. My mom always seemed to expect so much more than I could achieve. Saddeningly, her response will never be like that, the only time she is ever deep and personal to me is when she is scolding me.

  • this is a terrific movie that everyone needs to watch around mothers day

  • just because the movie is notable for having chinese-american lead actors doesnt mean it shouldnt get a nomination at the academy . it shouldve won many things . the academy is such a god damn racist .

  • i love the book!! I never knew their was a movie for it?! You took the worst crab cause you have the best heart...so true...selfish greedy people always take and take before thinking of others. They need so much to make them better.

  • one of the best movies I ever saw

  • She is also the voice of Mulan.

  • that scene is a classic tear jerker .

  • The seen when she was talking about her hopes always touches my heart ='(.

  • what does i see means in other words??

  • i saw this on youtube awhile back, why did they take it off?

  • Joy Lucky Club FTW!!! I love this movie.

  • The most BEAUTIFUL scene ever written into a play or movie or book. I LOVE this!

  • Tamilyn Tomita: by the far, the most attractive Asian woman (or any other woman) in regards to mind, body, and spirit, I have ever seen on camera..ever. Period. I used to work with a girl who was a dead on ringer for her. It broke my heart every time knowing she was married. In ways, it sounds corny, but with this movie, I thought she was my own.

  • I sob uncontrollably every time I see this part of the movie because it reminds me of my relationship with my mother. I have always felt like a disappointment to my mother.

  • I do remember hearing about this movie when it first came out in 1993 and I have not seen it ever since. This clip makes me want to watch the movie, thanks for posting this clip.

  • classic...

  • "You have style no one can teach. Must be born this way."

this scene never fails to make me cry.

  • @bluedahlia409

Me too. Whenever I watch this scene, I will think of my mom and couln't help crying. After so many years, I finally understood her totally. How I wish she could still be with me...my mother is just like hers.

  • "I see you"...thats the line they used in Avatar. Joy luck club for the win....

  • @mrkmoua Lame on Avatar, but powerful on here

  • Chinese should stop their oppression of Tibet before complaining about racism.

  • @bigfathippo53 why are you confusing the actions of the commie government with the actual citizens not to mention these are chinese americans <_<

  • @bigfathippo53 go look in the mirror before you call other people racist!

  • @bigfathippo53 then should Africans switch to democratic governments before complaining about racism in america too?

  • Do you have the scene where the mother says "I see you"? I just saw Avatar and they use that line in the movie and I was like "WHERE is that FROM??" then I finally remembered.

    I love this movie!!

  • OMG, I thought the same thing too when I saw "Avatar" but not immediately. LOL

  • 6:16 "That bad crab, only you try to take it. Everybody else want best quality. You, you thinking different. Waverly took best quality crab--you took worst; because you have best quality heart."

  • This is very sad but when I saw this movie the first time it came out, I laughed when June's mom said crab because it sounded like the word 'crap'. I know a lot better now.

  • I like how Auntie Lindo picks her teeth @ 1:54 after she asks June about her business.

  • that old woman is right, we all have our innate ability that cannot be taught onto others.

  • This was my favorite part of the book. They did a pretty good job putting it on the screen.

  • wait i thought her mom died...whos the hope girl?

  • @Lilsantashelper563 It is the mom who died. It is a flashback.

  • My mother always quotes June's mother at this part. Never expect anything, only hope. It's not wrong to hope. lol

  • i know i don't need to say it, but the book is 1000x better than the movie

  • i love this movie it's my favorite :D

  • look at June's parents, then it is not difficult to understand how come June has the best quality, she learnt everything through parents attitude, but in this clip, Waverly is totally rude to her childhood friend.

  • STop hating! This is a great movie of love and inspiration from Mother to Daughter. Who cares if it's in subtitles...english...chinese..whatever!! Get the TRUE message of the movie for Gods sake!

  • u idiot they do have chinese subtiles wat do u expect just becuz ur chinese doesnt mean we all are we need to understand to and btw june is in mulan!

  • TheCruddyBug...you dumb fuck - they speak english because they are American. Man - when you see other people of different race do you think they should speak their ethnic language too. You stupid fucking goof...

  • T_T

  • 1:33 June's thinking, "What a Fucking Bitch..."

  • This scene affected me more than any other. . . my mother's Chinese and I felt like I was never good. It even makes me tear up a little and I rarely do that with a film. : )

  • how can i get a clip of this from 5:40 minutes in until the end?

  • Waverly is a very devious I swear, and she seems a bit spoiled from her back story. I guess her mother shouldn't have treated her the way she did.

  • I feel the same way as June. Nothing is ever good enought for mother. My mother is always comparing me to her friends children. I have told her time after time that not all people have the same interest and are the same.

  • I feel the same as June. I never felt like anything was good for my mother. It's like my mother is alwasy comparing me to her friends children. I always feel that my mother does not understand that people are different. I do like how in the end though June's mother did explain how she felt.

  • "i was the biggest disappointment in my mother's life"

    Me & U both June !!!!!

    Me and you both !!!!!

  • deosn't matter wat other people feel of u as long as u feel good about u.....not to be in ur business just saying. make u happy and if others aren't happy or excited for u then oh well, wat do they no anyway.

  • this movie is amazing and this clip is my favorite part of the movie...simple words...I SEE YOU...so so powerful.....June's mother is an amazing actress

  • June really asked for it didn't she about the freelance?

  • The way june's mom humiliated her in front of everyone reminds me of how my mom! she does exactly the same thing! Must be a Chinese thing!

  • I don't think June's mother was trying to humiliate her. She was basically saying her daughter had the "Best quality heart" i.e. "style" in her own way when they were at at the dinner table.

She elaborated on this when she and June had the conversation afterwards :-)

  • It seemed like she was praising Waverly and putting June down.

"True. Cannot teach style. June not like Waverly. Must be born this way".

Her mom did explain what she meant afterwards... but at that time, when the sentence was said, there was no mention of best quality heart. But who's to said that she did not recounted as her daughter was clearly very upset at what she said...

  • I think it's not a chinese a thing.. It's an asian thing. I'm asian and not chinese but my mom acts like the same way. They want their daughter/s best than others.

  • ive read it..nice!!

  • I have yet to see the film, but I've read the novel and it was amazing and life changing. This is so wonderful.

  • I cry everytime i watch this movie..I give it to my friends to watch
