Also, bands that sing write lyrics to focus on the lyrics and when the lyrics are an afterthought to the music, one can usually tell, instrumental bands write music to focus on the music so the lyrical argument there doesn't even apply. Lyrics are an important part to any band THAT USES THEM. It isn't an absolute for all music.
Rather interesting thing. Drums are individual and, I'd say, unexpectable sometimes, voice reflects the inner sense of the song, reflects senses, that in our times not world wide thing. Well, I like them. Will download an album I think.
i respect tool and the work they've done and i won't compare the 2 bands but i only wanna point out that tool are known worldwide whereas DST are more likely an "underground" prog band, and i think they deserve a lot better than that. hope we'll see even greater things from them (or him...w/e)
i wouldn't say this guys voice is 'better' im new to DST but Maynards style is fairly different to this guy this guy has a similar feel but uses different techniques maynards is stronger, might just be from experience, i suppose it all just comes down to what you prefer, this band sounds like it has some hope for the future just needs to expand because to me there seems to be a hollowness, a void in their music that needs to be filled to give the band strong structure, but thats a first look
Maynard is still much better. Tool is a much more complete band.
As I've stated above, it hardly matters what they sound like, lyrics are the true test of music. Tool has lyrics that make this (and all other music) sound like shit.
i enjoy lyrics and tools lyrics are greats but i think to say what they sound like doesnt matter is when referring to music. The sound produced by a band or musician is the essence of music, that's why Tool don't publish lyrics so the attention is not focused on the lyrics. If lyrics are all that matters then maybe you should listen to things such as bob dylan or read some poetry or best of all, in my opinion, read some shakespeare. But Tool are great & its nice to hear another view of music
lol man are you aware of any music outside of mainstream metal? 'can't have a complete band/album without lyrics' lol are you aware of jazz., Miles davis' Bitches Brew, Herbie Hancocks Headhunter, The Mahavishnu Orchestras The Inner Mounting Flame, Weather Report, no lyrics, just pure musical talent. Lyrics are just a tool of the vocals, do yourself a favour and go listen to a broader range of music, Tool aren't the only band in the world, i leant that a long time ago, not to discredit the band.
"dude, you don't listen to anything other than Tool, how do you know what's good?"
Listen, I am a musician, I have listened to nearly every song worth listening to. I have listened to everything under the sun. Don't try to argue this point by saying I'm inexperienced.
I literally listen to a band in nearly every genre.
I enjoy purely instrumental.
If you tell me to go listen to a broader range of music again, I will eat your fucking face.
so if you have such a broad range of music taste how could one possibly say you can't have a good band without good lyrics, that surpases my knowledge of a simpletons mind so please enlighten me. Like i said before, in their most primal form, lyrics are a tool of vocals, words are used to articulate different sounds, like how a trumpeter changes his lips, or a drummer using double strokes. The point is lyrics are not a focus in music they're an accessory like a necklace.
I think lyrics are an extremely important part to any band that utilizes vocal melody. If you've ever taken a song that you like (such as a dylan song) and played just the vocal melody line it can sound very simple and boring. Lyrics are what keep the listener attached and focused on the music and the vocal line. If the lyrics didn't matter, singers might as well just hum the tune for their songs.
P.S.
Does anyone actually listen to Dead Soul Tribe? Haha.
yeah i agree but what i was saying before is that lyrics don't make a band. Hahahaha 'does anyone actually listen to dead soul tribe' lol it seems that alot of the people who comment hear only listen to Tool, i tried getting into DST but couldn't get many of their albums so gave up
Not necessarily. Take a look at White Denim, who have incredibly simple lyrics which works due to their crude style. Also, most "post rock" bands don't even use lyrics and they come out as being amazing.
Otherwise. He's not a particularly skilled singer. The only difference is that he has a very original and creative group to back him up. He's stated that the music is written first and is always the spotlight of any Tool recording. So his style derives solely from his bandmates' influence.
I see well my deepest apologize, but i still think Maynards voice is perfect for Tool. He is not a bad signer. He is no where close to Devin, but he does a amazing job
Maynard is probably one of the best singers of all time. Either way, Tool is about 1000x better than this. Their lyrics are lightyears ahead of anything else.
No, their method is great and yields fantastic music, but that doesn't mean Maynard is not a great singer.
The music is what Maynard uses to create the lyrics, but rest assured, the thoughts he writes down on paper were already in his mind prior to ever hearing the music.
It's just smarter to lay the music before vocals.
It really has nothing to do with the quality or skill of Maynard.
Maynard is probably the best singer/writer of our time.

I've written a few songs, for one. For two, Maynard has no technical ability regardless of his talent, because once again, he has no formal training, and little capability. The fact that you enjoy his singing has nothing to do with the objective fact that he is vocally limited. Geddy Lee is a parallel of this point, great expresive singer with little vocal technique. Why do you think you can comprehend something, which you have the slightest, faint grasp of?
It kinda ticks me off listening to DST...I'm a die-hard fan of Tool, and well...DST sounds really good, but a little "too much like Tool"..Almost sounds like various covers of Tool's songs, and the visual..I mean, what the fuc*..
I'm a big big big tool fan too and this songs doesn't sound so much like tool.. maybe visually because of the sober-like part but they sound great, even if they are a little bit like tool

Tool is boresome(IMO) in comparison to this. This band actually varies (from 'Tool-like' songs to way harder and weirder material) where Tool, however great, keeps hanging on to the same formula.

A rip-off of Tool, visually and musically. It is irrelevant when DST or any of it's musicians started, since all that matters is that Tool came along one day and this band derived a sound completely from them. Even if they had more varied sounding songs like many claim, it would be hard for me to listen to them now, since this songs very copycat existence leaves a sour taste.
Tool is amazing. . .but DST did not rip them off. I'm a die hard Tool fan, and i enjoy DST,but like Tool more way more. I must say DST is metal, and a bit darker than tool. Tool gives a weird atmosphere that i love. Still not the same bands dude hear DST so you can see what i mean
I listened to Tool earlier and to me it was ok,a good band, but in the end i didnt liked it to much. DST is very diferent to me and it is one of my fav bands. i listen to them a lot since i was introduced to them...
And theres nothing wrong with that.. DST has a lot of influences.. Jethro Tull being another strong influence. But trust me.. DST is more than just a Toolish sounding Prog Rock/Metal band.. they have some amazing tunes.
Everybody interested.. should give their "The January Tree" album a listen.
Devon Graves was in Psychotic Waltz.. a legendary and cult Prog Metal band that started in 1986 !!!! way before Tool started playing.
Anyway.. his style on Dead Soul Tribe has a lot to do with Maynard obviously, listen to the DST song "Lost In You".. its a note to note copy of APC "Judith".. even if you check the official bio of Devon on the DST website, you can read that he considers Tool and APC one of his fav bands.
Is everybody gonna give the thirty thousand bands out there crap because you can hear a Ministry influence on them...eg. Nine Inch Nails, Stabbing Westward, KMFDM. As long as the band is trying to do their own thing with their influences it is just nitpicking.
Psychotic Waltz was the band that Devon Graves was previously in and was around before Tool. The First PW album came out in 87. As most tool fans know that Tool didn't not form until 1990. There is not doubt that Tool hasn't been an influence on them. Bb
Not to mention that most progressive rock bands use this style of odd-time drumming, or the fact that most of DST's albums sound nothing like this one...
yeah but PW is totally different than DST. I dont think graves sang the same way when he was in PW, and the band itself was more progressive. I wouldnt say graves "ripped off", or was influenced by, Tool, but DST certainly has a similar sound, and jimmy came 10 yrs b4 this song.
I dont know about totally different. You can hear where they are different bands (Mostly the time signatures are less complicated in DST). But you totally hear PW in them. The song morbid by PW is very similar to a DST song in my opinon.
um i think important is.. this song is very different from the other's deadsoul tribe songs.. in this song theres an influence of tool for sure and so in the video.. all in all i like it but the tool videos are better :P
As someone from El Cajon who has had musical conversations with the now named Devon Graves and who has been an Psychotic Waltz fan before Tool was ever a band I can tell you that Devon is not ashamed of his influences, he proudly writes music with obvious stylistic quotes from other bands such as Jethro Tull, Sabbath, Maiden, Queensrhyce and many more.
Buddy Lackey and Psychotic Waltz (ASLAN) were one of the best bands this world has ever seen and Buddy is still an amazing musician! This song may be sonicly similar to Tool, but these guys are f'n awesome!
lmao! if you guys havent heard Ayreon, then you havent heard how much better of a vocalist Devin Graves is to Maynard. and Dead Soul Tribe is a progressive band that isnt so focused on nothing but rhythms like Tool is. in fact, Dead Soul Tribe is more like Porcupine Tree.
Very Toolish... you people should do your homework... the nusicians of Dead Soul Tribe were making music when Tool had just formed... 2 Members from Psychotic Waltz (who's sound in 1993, before Tool) sounded like Tool... Geez, and Metallica ripped of Iron Maiden, too, right?
Yeah... It was very tool... Especially with the drumming, (not to mention the fact that the singer would hold notes for a very long time), but still... It may not be anything unique, but it was still pretty good.

yeah but PW is totally different than DST.

The song morbid by PW is very similar to a DST song in my opinon.

definitely pieces of "jimmy" in this one

There's definitely a Tool influence to the video, no doubt. Although, calling Dead Soul Tribe a 'Tool' cover band doesn't do them justice at all.

Geez, and Metallica ripped of Iron Maiden, too, right?

was Tool even around in 82'?"
Hotstud619 4 years ago 2
dude you made a good point with the whole 82 thing but ya gotta learn to shut up when your on top

Dead Soul Tribe are a great band, but only seen them live before. Nice to see a video finally :-)
l2ainlnlvlay 5 years ago
A little bit static, but fits to climat. Fragmets of music and video are Toolish like indeed, but still I like it.

Wow! Never seen such an uninspired and futile attempt at ripping Tool off!!!
batmike 5 years ago
Yeah... It was very tool... Especially with the drumming, (not to mention the fact that the singer would hold notes for a very long time), but still... It may not be anything unique, but it was still pretty good.
