  • Great talk Tom. The ability to be such a good public speaker is a rare trait. Hopefully some games allow kids to learn these skills.

  • Mentioning a dearth of logic at a religious institution is a delicious irony.

  • Interesting talk, thanks Tom!

  • Amen!

  • @Tom Don't take it personal! You do great work whatsoever.

  • Btw: 'Christian schools' shouldn't be allowed. Same with Islamic schools, Buddhism schools, Scientology schools and so on... The problem is that once one starts to indoctrinate children with 'believes' you cannot differ anymore between 'he/she really wants to...' and 'he/she wants to because over the course of many many years he/she was told it's "normal"/everybody does'.

  • ..hmpf. I wrote some other stuff but iPhone just didn't send it. Whatever. Bottom line: Wait with all that religion stuff until your children are old enough to decide by themselves.

  • @MacBeezle Agreed.

  • If a child would come to me with that request I'll talk to him/her about it: Why he/she thinks she has to do that. If he/she really wants to do it because he/she wants it and not just because friends/school/teachers/tv/... told him/her.

I don't have a problem with religion. Whether an adult wants to pray to a god of choice is totally up to him/her. But school, children an religion should be strictly separated. Everyone wants to 'protect' children from 'everything' - so why indoctrinate them wi

  • Great work Tom. As a starting teacher i found it realy intressting. Greating from the Netherlands

  • Your best youtube post yet. Being a recently graduated teacher myself, i found it most interesting! :)

  • @macbeezle ...really, he's a christian, for him it's important, its ok, he's not saying they have to do it, but for him it's important, he lead with it, deal with it, if a muslim led with a prayer to mecca, so sue me, I'm alright with that!

  • Way to get the word out! I would love to see more educators using board games as tools. Keep it up :-)

  • You do a real service to mankind. If even 1 teacher in the room listens and takes your words to heart, it's worth it. I grew up through boring schools and boring classrooms. If only I had you as a teacher! Sucks most of the teachers in the room were women. I find them to be the least open to board games...I'm a woman, and it's like pulling teeth to get other females to play anything other than Facebook games...

  • The rest is nice though...

  • The first minute makes me sick! Stop messing up your kids by forcing them to take part in an archaic ritual! Grow up!

  • @MacBeezle

So if your child ever comes to you and tells you that they want to pray before a meal or a trip or anything else for that matter, are you going to let them because it is their choice or are you going to force them to do something else?

    Yeah. That’s what I thought.

  • @MacBeezle You realize he's at a Christian schools conference, yes? It seems like an appropriate thing to do.

  • Just passing through and I found myself watching this video in its entirety and now I am hanging around to make a comment! I am not a teacher. It had nothing to do with me. I was captivated by Tom Vassel's enthusiasm. What a brilliant speaker.

  • Excellent talk tom, people were rude to leave at the end...

  • Hey, is that guide available anywhere online?

  • Great lecture! I was enthralled. :)

  • Fantastic job, Thanks for sharing ;0)

  • This was a great lecture! I have been a board game enthusiast for a long time and couldn’t agree more on this subject.

For those whom have criticized Tom about what he said about Pandemic, you really need to watch the video again! I am not sure what you heard, but Tom was actually praising the way Pandemic’s theme is universally accepted: There is nothing wrong with working together to exterminate deadly viruses before they eradicate us.

    Great video!

  • Great Diplomacy reference at about the 24 minute mark.

  • I know one thing, our education could use this, actually we NEED this before everything turns to hell ;)

  • Fantastic stuff - you are an Evangelist, Tom (at least, for gaming!).

It would have been good to see you use a board game as part of the talk, to engage the listeners... Still, you have such a natural and easy manner in a pedogogical setting - good stuff!

    X

  • I loved the lecture. I'm a teacher-librarian and I'm hoping to use gaming with some classes in the near future. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • At 23:11 he mentions couches throughing volleyballs at kids, and a lady in the crowd raises her hand, "I do that all time!" :D

  • At 21:50 he mentions he has 6 daghters, and then it seems like there is alot of murmering from the women in the room. :D

  • As a pre-service English teacher who has been in love with board games from the beginning, I'm thankful that there are other teachers trying to further the cause of using Board Games educationally.

  • This was a really enjoyable and informative lecture! Thank you so much for sharing.

Like many others I'd also appreciate the handout if it could be made available / emailed. Looking forward to hearing from you (=

  • Great lecture Tom.... I want to use board games in the classroom - and I work with Soldiers :) But still... it's so engaging - and it can really teach people exactly what you want them to learn - if you find the right games....

I hope to see more videos like this in the future! :)

    Best regards SunTzuGames

  • I really enjoyed the video and, as someone who is using boardgames to communicate the elements to children in deprived Uganda I was very happy to see a presentation that communicated in plain english the benefits of boardgames. I'd like to see your recommended list of teaching games - is that available? Send mail to my Youtube, if it is!

  • Great presentation, Tom. I wish you'd given more time to specific games and how they're used. I find that info connects best with the teachers I've talked to.

  • 22:05 i like how they begin whispering "ssssix daughters" :)) Probably the moment when Tom got the attention of every woman in this room :)

Nice lecture. I thought i won't have patience to listen for 50 mins, but it went smoothly and unnoticed :) Reminded me how we were playing chess, well, not during the classes, but on the breaks, but this was promoted by our teacher.

  • You know, I am only 5 minutes into this video and this video deserve to be posted on my facebook, I am doing that now.!

  • I second the download:)

  • Fantastic! Thanks for sharing this, Tom. Great job.

  • Fantastic presentation Tom! I had no idea you taught in Asia! I'm going to be teaching English in China soon and this gave me a lot of good ideas. Thanks!

  • Any Chance you have the hand-out for download???

  • Great job Tom!

  • Tom, when you get a chance, could you please list the names of the 3-4 math games that involve "getting 5 in a row"? Thanks, -A

  • Yeah Tom, good lecture...

Lots of advice on how to make the games work in class, keep it going and keep the students involved.

I didn't see bias, other than showing games you really like.

I would also like a copy of the hand out, if it's available.

  • Great lecture. You knocked it out of the park, Tom. I'm a future school psychologist, and I'm going to think about how to incorporate games for teachers' classrooms.

  • @Dracopol No. I was saying the opposite. I was saying that even though people might have a problem with some themes, I can't imagine ANYONE having a problem with the theme of Pandemic.

  • @thedicetower Well, suppose you have a Christian who says, "Pandemic is a bad game to play. It postulates worldwide epidemics, whereas I as a Christian work to the day when the majority of the population will be cast into a fiery Hell. I object to revisionism of the future when the Bible so clearly predicts the real manner in which all the other people are to be killed, and I actively work towards that day" What do you say to them?

  • Great lecture.. I'm considering Pandemic now

  • Great lecture. Thank you.

  • This sounds like a giant ad for the boardgames rather than showing the merits of games in the classroom

  • @TheOriginalBoman Did you watch the whole thing? Tom gave multiple, specific examples of the benefits of the games he uses. He mentions the improvements in cooperation, socializing, use of logic and strategizing among others.

  • Hey, is it possible to post the hand-out you gave these teachers at the seminar? I'm a fairly avid gamer, but would still like to see the list of games for each subject as I work with our librarian and curriculum directors in buying games each year. In any case, wonderful lecture!

  • An amazing lecture! Tom you really know how to command a room, plus hearing the crowd react to the pictures of the board games was awesome. I hope to see more of these videos from you. Now if you will excuse me I have a Firestorm Armada fleet to plot!

  • Great lecture! I listened to it twice while I painted my SPACE HULK miniatures!

  • I guess there was some predetermined time limit, but geeze, they're nearly walking out before Mr. Vasel could finish up properly.

  • Nice one, Tom. Can I second the request for a downloadable copy of the handout.

  • @bilbobaglin

I second the request for a downloadable copy of the handout.

  • 8:27 what in the desert???

  • Thank you really much for posting this!

  • Absolutely Awesome!!!

  • Is there a link where I can find the hand outs you gave out during your speech?

  • @yugilynn for reals. I'm not a teacher, but even as an avid watcher of the Dice Tower, some of these were new to me.

  • @yugilynn Yes. Please email me at tomvasel@gmail.com if you want a copy.

  • Jeez teachers are terrible students. And I should know, I'm a teacher. But I'm the one who will sleep through your presentation, instead of making noise and disrupting it like some of these did.

  • 9:12 - I lol'd.

  • Awesome video, love how you tied games to real life situations, as a future teacher i would also like to see the hand out you passed along

  • Excellentl lecture! Is the handout by chance posted online? I wouldn't mind looking at it or giving it to some people I know.

  • @GMLegendary Hear hear! Though I suggest PM'ing him about it, not sure if he reads these comments.

  • Nice Lecture. Been a long time since i was in grade school but I remember when we got to play games in class it was amazing. :D
