Germany may produce good equipment but if the politicians have their way there may soon be no German army to speak of.The German people live with their heads in history instead of learning from it and I fear more American and British lives will be lost in the interests of a free world while they sit on their backsides playing politics. They are happy to export the weapons of war and watch their allies die from the sidelines however. This is no comment on the brave Germans currently serving!

Canada dumped buying a bunch of Stryker's after seeing first hand in Afghanistan the effectiveness of having this powerful tank..Think they even bought a 100 more..
i think when you compare the abilities of the worlds best ground vehicles the Germans always tend to make the best ones, i am american and there is a possibility we may be replacing our Bradley's with the Puma IFV, it would be good to have some superior german engineering in our arsenal.but until then.

The armor packs are all secrete but apparently Germany has stayed state of the art in offering excellent countermeasure for these tanks..They also offer easy in field maintenance and complete power plant exchange in a matter ofhours.
Whew, that's a tough statement to defend. The problem is that you can't go by looks and what's written down on a spec sheet. The only TRUE measure of a MBT is it's combat history. And I don't think this tank has been head to head with another, to my knowlege. The only modern tanks of this caliber to have seen real tank on tank combat is the Abrahms, the Challenger II, the Merkava. I am by no means taking anything away from the Leo2, but it's hard to quantify with hard data :)

I'm sorry for using"sir",but this is quite refreshing for me since the last one I debated regularly calls me an idiot or a dumbpfacke, whatever that means.Seriously, man, the leo 2s new arrowhead turret is flawed, trapping the force of the explosion between the turret and the hull if hit in the downside of the foreside turret.The escape hatch is also one, that's why the m1doesn't have one.Cya later.
My whole point was, if a 10kg ied was enough to penetrate the leo 2s supposedly superior armor, I wonder what would have happened to it if it was hit by an ied with an explosive weight of 60/90 kgs? Such an explosion picked up a 68 ton m1a2 several inches in the air and nearly flipped it over. Fortunately, none of the crews got hurt. Another 90 kg ied tore the turret loose off another m1a2 though no one got killed. These powerful ieds are made up of several 155 mm shells attached to a detonator.
Germany is still keeping her head low after the events of WW2..that's why they don't get involved much in foreign conflicts of hear much about it's military..it's a pity coz German soldiers are the best in the world.
The Leopard is admittedly a superb piece of armor. But it is rather quaint that everybody but the Germans are using them in the current theaters of war. Come on Germany, grow some balls and take a little pride in your impressive feat of engineering. =)

@Haubitzer Ironically, it was a danish leo 2a5 w/c got hit with a small caliber ied in afghanistan which resulted in 3 wia and 1 kia. Thanks for proving the superiority of the m1 armor which can withstand an ied attached to a 60 to 90 kg explosive charge. Happened on july 25, 2008. Peace.

Also, minor scratches and bruises are not "injured" or "wounded". That's what medals are given for, maybe! Yes, the Danish Army is notoriously hard to wring those little pieces of metal out of.

@SpiderDroid2 Abrams use jet engine. Jet engine use jet fuel. Jet fuel easy flammable.İf enemy hit jet fuel carrying truck Abrams useless. USA needs new Tank concept.
If enemy hits diesel trucks then diesel tank is useless. Abrams is available with diesel engine.
The gas turbine is quiet, reliable has good performance and runs on many fuel types. The only real drawback is the heat and fuel consumption (but a Leo 2 isn't very economical either).
Both are excellent tanks and they are both derived from the MBT-70 project.
Abrams has better armor but Leo2 tiny bit better mobility and firepower. L44 with DU is close to L55 gun penetration.
@NationalSniper Where do you come up with this rubbish? Do you just make it up for the sake of talking? I have not seen you make one correct comment yet! lol ALL NATO TANKS SINCE THE 1950's HAVE BEEN MULTIFUELLED, its a STANAG which is a NATO Standardization Agreement that they all have to be able to run on any type of fuel.
See the Leo has 3 major things that make it better than the M1,
1) it has a V12 Turbo Diesel, which is far better in terms of range and refuelling time(Remeber your M1 uses a V10 Turbo'd Gas engine which is good for about 400miles, this is good for about 600)
2nd) The fact that its using DU is bad idea, great in a shell, bad idea when it comes to armor, and this is a proved fact that tank crews are getting sick now because of it
I've always loved German tanks. Tiger I is my favorite tank from WWII. Leopard 2A6 is my favorite modern tank, 2nd is M1A2 Abrams, then 3rd is Challenger II.
@USMCFUCKYEA i mixed up some numbers. the m1 uses the 120mm cannon from rheinmetall germany. its pretty much exactly the same as the ones on leo2's, but with a shorter barrel(l44 of m1's and l55 on leo2's) far superior my ass.

@catbearlol Hey moron. The m1 did use an 105 mm cannon, but the m1a1 and m1a2 are using smoothbore 120 mm guns, just like the leo2. The only tank that uses the 125 mm gun is the t72.
both have advantages and disadvantages. the leo uses a v12, the abrams uses a gas turbine. leo has more armour, abrams is lighter.taliban rpg's arebouncing of both of them thats for sure..!
@williamhad the abrams use a gas turbine engine unlike the leo which uses a regular internal combustion engine. this gives the abrams much better acceleration but less fuel effiency.
Funny to see that many people regard this as the best tank just by taking account of his armor. For example, it has no system of automatic recharging, has a crew of 4 men, increasing its size and makes it easier to spot. Moreover, its enormous weight makes it impracticable on certain lands, as in Yugoslavia. It is the same for Challenger2.
All this e-peening and flaming about which tank is better .. Both M1A2 Abrams and Leopard 2A6 are incredible machines. Whatever differences they do have in performance are canceled out by crew training. Personally, I seriously don't want to sit in any tank that either an M1A2 or 2A6 is angry at and I'm glad that the armies fielding Abramses and Leopards are allies.
That said, I prefer Leopard. It just looks cooler in my opinion, and the fact that it has a V12 instead of a thirsty turbine helps.
@fnglert I agree, wouldn't want to mess with either. BTW, both tanks have their ceramic plate armor made in Canada and since both are NATO, there is a lot of shared tech. British Challenger is very good as well. Don't know much about the French tanks. I must admit, the lower profile leopard is pretty cool.
for me MERKAVA ITS THE BEST TANK because it has much longer service than abrams from 1980 until present day because Israel and Palestine never sign a peace and the newest Merkava its 4th edition in which soldiers were involved when they were design a new Merkava!!!!! And ofcourse its the safest tank in the world

perhaps i should explain myself better. you seem to be looking at only a very small fraction of what a tanks advantages and disadvantages are. you are looking at armor, firepower, and mobility. little do you know that there is more to a tank nowadays than that. there are automated systems, efficient engines (if an abrams wants to compete with either other tanks it must be moving constantly because it burns more than a conventional engine when stopped but less while moving)
@KottonmouthSoldiers (... this is because it uses the same technology as a jet fighter plane, which if youll notice are rarely not in motion) not to mention targetting systems, software, repairability (the abrams cannot be plugged into a computer and have a diagnosis run through all the tanks operations looking for malfunction/damaged hardware) and dozens of other factors, most of which have only present themselves in recent years. maybe you knew a lot back in your day, but times have changed.
lets get this straight leopard 2 is the best tank today 2nd is the chalanger and 3th is the abrams all good tanks. well maby the challenger is better but there are way more leo2s build than challenger 2s.

Also without the Netherlands the EU would crumble since it is all about Germany and Germany is an exporting nation and all of that is shipped abroad in the Netherlands. Don't tell me that you count either Italy or Spain as an impotent country since they are both getting closer and closer to asking for financial support from the EU.

@tette666 Really sad waste, we had some good track record with these tanks (love the simplicity of them need more range, no need for fancy fire control systems that break down, just put a longer barrel on the thing)
Sad to see them go, though I am more sad to see our naval strength reduced, our navy should be the key of our defence forces seeing how important trade by sea is for our country.

If enemy hits diesel trucks then diesel tank is useless. Abrams is available with diesel engine.
The gas turbine is quiet, reliable has good performance and runs on many fuel types. The only real drawback is the heat and fuel consumption (but a Leo 2 isn't very economical either).
Both are excellent tanks and they are both derived from the MBT-70 project.
Abrams has better armor but Leo2 tiny bit better mobility and firepower. L44 with DU is close to L55 gun penetration.

I have not seen you make one correct comment yet! lol ALL NATO TANKS SINCE THE 1950's HAVE BEEN MULTIFUELLED, its a STANAG which is a NATO Standardization Agreement that they all have to be able to run on any type of fuel.

See the Leo has 3 major things that make it better than the M1,
1) it has a V12 Turbo Diesel, which is far better in terms of range and refuelling time(Remeber your M1 uses a V10 Turbo'd Gas engine which is good for about 400miles, this is good for about 600)
2nd) The fact that its using DU is bad idea, great in a shell, bad idea when it comes to armor, and this is a proved fact that tank crews are getting sick now because of it
3) Its Germany

I've always loved German tanks. Tiger I is my favorite tank from WWII. Leopard 2A6 is my favorite modern tank, 2nd is M1A2 Abrams, then 3rd is Challenger II.

@catbearlol Hey moron. The m1 did use an 105 mm cannon, but the m1a1 and m1a2 are using smoothbore 120 mm guns, just like the leo2. The only tank that uses the 125 mm gun is the t72.

Funny to see that many people regard this as the best tank just by taking account of his armor. For example, it has no system of automatic recharging, has a crew of 4 men, increasing its size and makes it easier to spot. Moreover, its enormous weight makes it impracticable on certain lands, as in Yugoslavia. It is the same for Challenger2.

All this e-peening and flaming about which tank is better .. Both M1A2 Abrams and Leopard 2A6 are incredible machines. Whatever differences they do have in performance are canceled out by crew training. Personally, I seriously don't want to sit in any tank that either an M1A2 or 2A6 is angry at and I'm glad that the armies fielding Abramses and Leopards are allies.
That said, I prefer Leopard. It just looks cooler in my opinion, and the fact that it has a V12 instead of a thirsty turbine helps.

@fnglert I agree, wouldn't want to mess with either. BTW, both tanks have their ceramic plate armor made in Canada and since both are NATO, there is a lot of shared tech. British Challenger is very good as well. Don't know much about the French tanks. I must admit, the lower profile leopard is pretty cool.

perhaps i should explain myself better. you seem to be looking at only a very small fraction of what a tanks advantages and disadvantages are. you are looking at armor, firepower, and mobility. little do you know that there is more to a tank nowadays than that. there are automated systems, efficient engines (if an abrams wants to compete with either other tanks it must be moving constantly because it burns more than a conventional engine when stopped but less while moving)

@KottonmouthSoldiers (... this is because it uses the same technology as a jet fighter plane, which if youll notice are rarely not in motion) not to mention targetting systems, software, repairability (the abrams cannot be plugged into a computer and have a diagnosis run through all the tanks operations looking for malfunction/damaged hardware) and dozens of other factors, most of which have only present themselves in recent years. maybe you knew a lot back in your day, but times have changed.

but becouse the russians had almost 7 times as much t-34s than the germans had (king) tigers (on the eastern front) the germans had no chance at all. (i'm not german)
