  • location ?

  • Well, better for it to go back into the ground where it belongs rather than having it burned. ...... One question though, is this the "clean coal" that they are talking about?

  • Not a smoking traction motor. Heavy downhill train = smoking brakes. Coal loads are usually sprayed with a special stuff to contain dust. Aparently it either broke down or was never applied.

  • I counted 105 cars

  • I was holding my breath just watching it so as not to breath it in!

  • this is unacceptable

  • It's the Wal-Mart Train

this coal is taken by blowing up NW mountain ranges is then shipped out of Canada to CHINA to power their manufacturing plants and then those items are sold back to us at

    WAL MART

  • that is smokeing break pads

  • I think the train didn't have enough power for dynamic braking.

  • that was going tooooo fast down the hill

  • Under that front truck, is that smoke or coal dust left in the ballast from other trains? The locomotive has very powerful traction motor blowersand that could be coal dust being blown out from between the rails by the vents in the tm's.

  • That's not a traction motor, it's a brake shoe. notice at the very beginning it's on the fireman's side of the engine. if it were a motor, the smoke would be on both sides. Also, if it were that, it wouldn't have lasted that long before shorting out.

Now the coal dust is bad... I'm sure they lost a couple tons on that trip. I'm surprised they don't have the latex coating on top of the coal to keep it from blowing away like that. The next problem is fouling the ballast.

  • @kleetus92 I don't think it'll affect the ballast all that much. Westbound loaded coal trains are very rare here. And the eastbound loads are dragging on the hill so slowly, there isn't any coal dust at all.

  • wow that trains got issues

  • dang! Die of black lung from railfanning....

  • I need an oxygen mask just watching that

  • Gotta be the brake shoes smoking trying to hold the train back.

  • Dust problem? I don't have a dust problem! I could stop anytime I want!

  • Wow. That's insane. Awesome video!

  • Blame it on the coal dust Doug. Those traction motors must've been stinking more than the coal dust.

  • geez, what a mess!
