I would so just love to have on of these birds as a life companion. But when I see them in the snow like this, I seriously think it's better to let them be free. Taking away that freedom would be so stupid.
These birds deserve to be free. They're to magnificent to become parrots.
Ravens are among the most intelligent bird species. Ravens can also learn to speak better than parrots. There are also some videos were ravens use traffic to crack shells.
If'n U think, that all we know, Is to roll down slopes made white with snow, Then lookie here, you slandering brutes, We'll soon file class action suits, From your myth & poets jest, Targets grew upon our breasts, Your laws say black's same as white, Tho chapels' skies show doves in flight, Won't be long now mark our caws, Til you're hoisted on ur own petards, Our counsel soon will file our tort, And Poe's ass astral will be called to court...
Nature or nurture? Quoth the raven, with an itch, no finger, have I, that can scratch. Damn these bugs and ticks and lice, some dirt to roll in would be nice. A pool to drown them would be fun or snow to freeze them every one so I can be free of their taunts, returning to my favorite haunts. To have a bird's brain don't mean squat if you can repeat what you're taught. Natural mimics, we're quite clever, used by poets to quoth "never". Happy to fly free in the sky and have a program wonder why.
@Sueezedtight Very nice Peter, but ravens advise, thru their counsel of course, that they never ever cuss, and the attribution of irreverent & uncharacteristic behavior to a species or group legally constitutes defamation, thereby you may be called upon in due course to make an appearance at the forthcoming public action to testify as to the veracity of said cussing & to provide insight into your alleged interpretation of Corvicaphony, always contained within the family. Bird brain huh?
@zzinglish53 Wow, did you write that? That's incredible.
I was kind of thinking the same thing. That the raven is framed and railroaded just because of his pigment. If instead they had gold feathers they would be seen as much different characters. How superficial is man's vision.
If man kind ever discovers the secrets to creating a time machine to go back to the beginning of the world, likened to when we sent a monkey as the first in space may I suggest we send a raven or two first.
Oh--the music for this Nature episode was by Maddy Prior, who is seen at the beginning of the show in a rather...corny...historical re-enactment. I'm guessing the piper is Troy Donockley. ??
See Maddy's 1999 album, "Ravenchild," especially the song cycle "In the Company of Ravens" and "Masts of Morrigan."
Love this clip. But given that birds have been around for about 150 million years longer than modern mammals, I like to think that canine puppies learned this behavior from birds. Not the other way around!
@jalloul512 as long as you're ready to keep them entertained. They're like border collies, if you don't do something to occupy them then they'll find something themselves. Like getting in your wallet and eating your money. It's not that I"m trying to discourage you, I'd like one too, but sometimes it's better to just want. . .
Birds are a lot smarter than they get credit for. They are also very emotional. They do not however understand Irony. When a bird says "You look great today!" they are not being sarcastic.
Seriously though- In my opinion Ravens/Magpies/Crows/whatever else you call them are one of the most beautiful birds. I wish I knew someone who had one, I would love to hang out with one.
But what happens when we get overrun by them? Our "place in the world" according to the natural order of things, is a VERY efficient predator. And how did a simple video of birds having fun get to be a discussion on the right vs. wrong of killing animals?
It is amazing to see the way a raven problem solves, for example, the birds that were dropping walnuts into an intersection at a cross walk so cars would run them over, then they would wait on the sidewalk fo rthe light to change, then walk over and get the nut. Ravens are astounding creatures :-3
I agree completely... and the way we slaughter animals without thought is further proof that the worst species on the planet. Hopefully, we will realize how we fit into the world before it's too late. I doubt it, however, as religion still leads humans to believe they are greater than we truly are.
well tongpu you shouldn't blame all religion for this, I'm a Muslim but I believe that we humans are guardians of the Earth not its rulers! We are supposed to take care of the Earth not use it as an ashtray! It's true the way we slaughter animals is very cruel, but eating meat is part of nature but if we must kill than do it as humanely and painlessly as possible, we should share the Earth, animals are technically part of God's family, and God is good to those who are good to his family.
You are absolutely right themuslimburro . Since we are the "dominant species", we are responsible for taking care of the planet. God gave us the responsibility to take care of our fellow animals.
@sparkshark789 it's that sort of mentality of believing that we are the "dominant species" which can get us into trouble...isn't it better to have all species on equal grounds? We humans are not masters of anything nor should we "dominate" anyone or anything. We should try to coexist peacefully instead.
tongpu12, rather than blaming religion for everything that's wrong with the world, you should instead read about the National Religious Partnership for the Environment and the Alliance of Religions and Conservation.
As themuslimburro and sparkshark789 said, your opinion on religion runs contrary to the message taught by many religions--especially the Abrahamic ones.
I believe mankind has sold all animals short. Animals are far more inteligent & have a greater understanding of life than they have gotten credit for. We should love all animals like children. Protect them and nurture them.

And cloak this black guilt o'er a thousand things,

But stand libeled in myths by those who never flew...
