Love every single unbelievable moment of this particular performance of this song. Lee, Jimmy and Walt on the horns, Danny on drums, Bobby on the keys and vocals, Peter on bass and vocals. But, and I mean BUT, when I need my spirit lifted and my pulse to quicken from sheer musical genius, I listen first to the GREAT Terry Kath from 5:03 - 5:58 as he takes my eardrums to places they had only dreamed of going...Go Terry, Go, Go Go!!!
Terry Kath has got to be considered one of the greatest rock and roll guitarists period. Had he pursued jazz I think he would have been considered a great jazz guitarist. AND, and, and his voice was incredible. Chicago really didn't survive his tragic, premature death.
When Joan Jett and the Blackhearts got nominated I laughed my ass off-come on she was garbage, the "hall of fame" is the biggest joke ever. CHICAGO will always and forever be one of the top 3 American bands ever(STEELY DAN and THE EAGLES)You cannot touch this lineup-three lead singers in one band Terry Peter and Robert could have all fronted their own groups- this band was a fucking powerhouse-never anybody like them, a tremendous band that is virtually untouchable Kath was a freaking superman
The newest Rolling Stone list of greatest guitarists mention Willie Nelson and Bruce Springsteen. I like their music, but WTF!?! They say that Willie Nelson is better than Terry Kath at playing guitar? I felt like I got kicked in the balls when I read that horrendous piece of hot garbage. Did they ask some fucking ass clown like Lil Wayne or Miley Cyrus who they thought were the best guitarists? Whoever said it was ok to publish that shit can lick my taint.
When Hendricks saw these guys play he was quoted as saying that Terry was a better guitarist than him. We live in such a different era musically but thank God we got to experience this particular lineup of great musicians, they'll never get the full credit they deserve.
the power and energy came from Kath ,Cetera, and Serafine. the horns were the mellow sound , the fact that this video is recorded in Chicago, the bands name sake ,I wish I was there . ,Kath was one of the best guitarist, powerful and innovative sound. unfortunately with the loss of Kath the band regrouped nicely with Cetera at the helm then he left and then Serafine was shoved out of his own band, all they do now is keep making greatest hits ,i think their on their 10th greatest hits album.
@MrStoney2011 I TOTALLY agree with you...For the REAL inside scoop: Read Danny Seraphine's book STREET PLAYER..not only will it shed the REAL light on how things went down, it will make you ANGRY!
The genius of the Chicago from the 60's and 70's will never fully be realized excapt by those who appreciate a group as ultimately talented in so many ways. This son which is about the bad economy of the 70's and the war in vietnam (which i lived through). between Terry and Walter and Robert ,,,, they even today have more music and rock in their bodies than all of todays groups combined. This is what we all miss in REAL rock and music., We can change the world now! Rock on!!!
@ww20nysms (( And this song could be "torn from the headlines" of today. ))
I've never understood why and how this song isn't revived or like PolicSci 101 in every school since it was written in i think this same year of performance, 1972. It spoke to the 80s and WALL STREET "all about Me & Greed" era, it spoke to the Dotcom Tech Bubble and FUCK everyone, we've got stock options era, and it speaks to GREED 2: Wall Street Fucks Again, and Dotcom Bubble 2. Greedy Fucks while war is dragging on
Today's music isn't music at all, it's shit! These guys were innovators along with The Beatles, Stones, Zep etc. One can only hope that, in this case, history will someday repeat itself.
Love this song. This is a great performance. I attended my first rock concert when I was 15 in 1970. Chicago was the opening act for Three Dog Night. Chicago's music seemed raw compared to the polished, veteran TDN. Neither are in the RRHF. Chicago probably will be by mid- decade; before the grunge and alternative bands from the early 90s become eligible due to the 25 year rule. Who knows. Does it really matter anyhow?
I disagree with thereal. I think our generation DID change things...with music. I don't think any generation produced as great music as was made in the 70s and 80s. Meaningful lyrics and great tunes that really moved people. Who knows how many people acted to make the world better, because they heard songs like this??
You don't need a PLACE to call the R&R hall of fame. Rock'n Roll grabs you in the gut and sticks in your heart. Terry and a lot of others that our generation were lucky enough to grow up to live up to this fame every day!!
The fact that Terry Kath is not recognized as one of the best guitarists in rock music history is a travesty. Blame it on Jan Wenner and his bs Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What a joke...reminds me of high school...if your not in the 'clique', you suck. Rolling Stone is what sucks.
@CntrlScrtnizr amen to that! very "cliquey". Jan Wenner and anyone who puts any stock in the so called RRHF can pound sand. You've got "artists" who aren't even rock that have been inducted. and i use the term "artist" loosely.
@CntrlScrtnizr All hall of fame's are a joke - Some arbitrary rules are made up by a few people with influence and some of the greats get lost in the shuffle. This is especially true in sports hall of fames today, where outlasting your piers and running your numbers up is more important than great performance and a selfless attitude.
@CntrlScrtnizr And again, for 2011, Rolling Stone has unveiled their newest 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list, and still, there's no mention of Terry Kath.

Kath was one of the greatest and most underrated vocalists of the seventies. He was also a great guitarist. This performance is awesome. Its great to see eary Chicago at their absolute best!!
Love chicago in the Kath era because it was raw and edgy but still sounded like music, got a point across without degrading women and having not pride about busting them up, could it be because this is truly music and lyrics? Love my terry!!!

This was one of about six nights they did that week. I saw a couple of them, but one they did a few months earlier at Ravinia was one for the books. A film of that one would back me up.
saw chicago with the doobies a few days ago - loved the show both were great - but as a not too proud boomer when they got to Dialogue 1/2 - I found myself getting incredibly angry at my generation. The hope and optimism and the desire to "Make it better" then was so strong - but being the selfish generation - we blew it big time - we did the exact opposite. "we DIDN'T make it happen". boomers are worthless. Ruined everything our parents "Greatest Generation" built. I hope the millenials fix it.
@therealrapantaleo I am 56 years old still fighting the shit that everybody knows is wron g I am physically falling apart but will not punk out or make excuses or place blame get up every morning ready to confront and kick some ass
@therealrapantaleo If I remember correctly, we were rebelling AGAINST our parents generation in the late late 60's-early 70's! You are correct, though, in concluding that our "boomer generation" DID ruin everything our parents did to make this a great nation. Today, through Liberalism, socialist programs, and the political correctness that we now live under, we've "devolved" into a nation that more resembles Europe, rather than the great nation we once were. Sickening....
I don't know if the time frame is right, but this song reminds me of trying to keep Nixon out. The little people against big business. A battle we're still fighting.
This song moves me as much now as it did close to 40 years ago. It's music that SAID SOMETHING. The band's at its peak here...and gosh, I miss the 'old days' of yore...
@rbgtr this song was from the fifth album. The video is from the DVD on the boxed set, and they play songs from VII or 7 on the DVD so this is probably when VII came out.
Does anybody know why Danny was tossed out of the band? I've said it a thousand times that not having Chicago and The Moody Blues in the R&R HOF is one of the geat injustices.
@ween275 I read somewhere that he was not resting adequately during the day so they could play well at night, as a result his performances were getting worse and worse. He wasn't rehearsing when the band wanted to, and arriving late to concerts or just minutes before going on stage. A shame...he is a great drummer.
To this day it still grinds me! The deal is that i was working at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago those nights. The Auditorium has beautiful and had almost perfect acoustics. The Arie Crown was just a bad sounding hall and most of the blaring hard rock bands played there. And where did Chicago get booked? you guessed it, The Arie Crown. Oh well! I sure do enjoy all the old clips and concerts on You Tube here. and this is a great one!
Thank you for letting those of us too young to see Terry in concert, see him now. His voice just is too awsome. He wrote a song Beyond all sorrows and it was fabulous I appreciate the effort that it takes to bring these videos to us. I absolutely love terry Kath era Chicago, it was more edgy
This song is even more pertinent today. Most of the people in the audience are now sleep-walking through life after having given away their Constitutional rights and having been dumbed down to the point of being unable to comprehend it.
ghugs -- I read somewhere that Terry played an unusually high chord on his guitar in every song to let everyone else know when the song should end. If I remember correctly, it was always at 8 chords prior to when the song should end and everyone in the group recognized it and ended the song at that time. Read it a while ago, so sorry I can't provide a citation.
OMG!! Terry at the end of this song!! He could have stood there singing the same words over and over for hours and I would have stayed! I always loved this extended ending and was thrilled when they stuck to it later on during live performances. Thanks once again Juantoletemex for a rocking good time!!!
The song had such intricate tempo changes, brilliant lyrics and is sung with unrestrained passion. Man the 70's rocked. Where has all the soul gone???
if u watch closely in this video, jimmy's eyes keeping looking right (at terry)whether to stay in beat or get his approval i dont know.also robert is singing while looking at terry, peter is singing while facing terry, and almost every other band member looks at terry while performing.interesting, huh?
@muzicrox9 They were looking at him because he is the director, if you will, of the last couple of minutes of the song. He gives them a signal of when to stop the song (I think it is a raised fist, but double check me on that). When he raises his fist, they end with "We can make it hap...."
Just talked to Danny at a Clinic for samash a few weeks ago. He was let go when Terry died! He was NOT very Happy then or now but he moved on. he has new band called CTA- california transit Authority. At SamAsh, he was surprised, as we all in attendance, when a CoverBand came in and played with him. It was Danny's first time in 30 years he played those CHicago songs. We all had a great time!
incredible music...Terry was as good a rock guitarist as there was and sang as ballsy as anyone.

The band's at its peak here...and gosh, I miss the 'old days' of yore...

i was at that concert! man what a long time ago. they were probably working on the fifth album at the time.
rbgtr 1 year ago
@rbgtr this was from the sixth album and they played stuff from VII (7) at this concert. This is from the boxed set DVD if you want to see all songs.
eddhouck 1 year ago
@rbgtr this song was from the fifth album. The video is from the DVD on the boxed set, and they play songs from VII or 7 on the DVD so this is probably when VII came out.

Does anybody know why Danny was tossed out of the band? I've said it a thousand times that not having Chicago and The Moody Blues in the R&R HOF is one of the geat injustices.
ween275 1 year ago
Sadly, he wrecked a concert in England apparently. Too bad - his work on Beginnings all those years ago was fabulous.
machone35 1 year ago

Look at Mr. Kath's Telecaster.
This was before he stuck all the "sticker remnants" all over it!
Wonder where old Fender went?
Thanks for posting!!

This song is even more pertinent today. Most of the people in the audience are now sleep-walking through life after having given away their Constitutional rights and having been dumbed down to the point of being unable to comprehend it.
BrosaJarlen 2 years ago 11
ghugs -- I read somewhere that Terry played an unusually high chord on his guitar in every song to let everyone else know when the song should end. If I remember correctly, it was always at 8 chords prior to when the song should end and everyone in the group recognized it and ended the song at that time. Read it a while ago, so sorry I can't provide a citation.
carina2244 2 years ago
@carina2244 I've heard the same, but at the end of this song, with the exception of the bass note roll every now and then, they are a capella.

@kenmtb So glad I came of age in '70. It was cool - and my university students say the same - and wished they'd been there

if u watch closely in this video, jimmy's eyes keeping looking right (at terry)whether to stay in beat or get his approval i dont know.also robert is singing while looking at terry, peter is singing while facing terry, and almost every other band member looks at terry while performing.interesting, huh?
muzicrox9 2 years ago 4
@muzicrox9 They were looking at him because he is the director, if you will, of the last couple of minutes of the song. He gives them a signal of when to stop the song (I think it is a raised fist, but double check me on that). When he raises his fist, they end with "We can make it hap...."
ghugs 2 years ago
@ghugs i think u may be onto something. it does look like the raised fist is the signal to stop, thnx.
muzicrox9 2 years ago
Yeah, every band has an "engine." In the Stones, its Keith. In the Beatles, its John. In Chicago, it was Terry.
stuartmcdowall 2 years ago 6
@stuartmcdowall
I beg to differ. In the Stones it was Brian. After HE died, they never were as good.
BrosaJarlen 2 years ago 4
Before Chicago V came out, they did this and just about everything else from that album in Indianapolis. They were LOUD, too. And AMAZING.
