@grahamlaur That's because he's being very articulate without actually saying anything of substance. But because he's not a pop dunderheaded rocker, people will latch onto him and marvel at his "superior intellect" and stroke their own egos for pretending to understand him. It's common in progressive rock. But i dig the music, thats all that matters.
I wonder why people are judging Robert just by this interview...they are just trying to appear as smart as he is (or maybe smarter), but obviously we all know the truth.
Public Access Cable was new in 1979 and used inexpensive black & white cameras until the early 80s. On commercial TV, everything was in color by then.
why is this interview done in black and white if it's 1979? Was this like a local community television show or were they still broadcasting in B&W in the UK in 1979?
I've been a great admirer of this chap's music (excluding bloody Frippertronics!) for more years than I care to remember. However, I have never lost sight of the fact that this is one bloke who is so far up himself you can see his ankles disappearing.
@Bogallan "'ve been a great admirer of this chap's music (excluding bloody Frippertronics!) for more years than I care to remember. However, I have never lost sight of the fact that this is one bloke who is so far up himself you can see his ankles disappearing.
He really is delighted with himself."
Exactly. He's a great guitarist but sadly deluded about his "stardom", at least here.
Not at all, but I'll run a mile from those who are introspectively self-satisfied, I'm sure that he is highly intelligent, but that does not preclude him from being 'deep and meaningless'.
Celebrity status does not excuse this.
A fair test would be..... would you give this bloke the time of day if you met him in the
Ironicly nearly every ex-Crimson member as gone on to be more successful/wealthy/famous then Fripp, but this says more about Fripp's character and beliefs then anything else. He is a very intelligent man.
What does that have to with anything? The only thing that is important is the music he creates. Also I think he has done pretty well for himself to not have to worry about his next paycheck whilst also having a catalogue of music that he can proud of unlike the others.
If you actually took the time to absorb my comment you would have noticed I pointed out that Robert is ONLY about the music, he could have altered his music even slightly for fame and fortune, but did not. His convictions are strong.
My apologies. I made that comment after a 10 hour shift on an intensive care ward with all the magic and fun of the world removed from my soul. However, its now sunny and springlike and i'm feeling much better, thanks.
I Like Fripp here (he's been known to be very condescending at times). And these interviewers are okay too I suppose (but they even LOOK very OF their time whereas Fripp does not look straight out of 1979 per se). Moving on. What was the name of this show?
Looks like a suburban version of TV Party (which Fripp was also on). Like hip via Trenton, N.J.
Woman prog fans are usually holdovers from their boyfriends influence, or just unusual, because it is unfortunately, mostly a guy thing. Hard to pideonhole the whole gender, and I invite criticism on this subject, which I welcome.
Trying to taunt me are you Ron?(haha!)As with ALL styles and genres of music, there is the social, intellectual, emotional or visceral appeal(all of which involve a psycho-neuro component). I will expound further, should you entice me to do so(if I have the luxury of time!)You should read Dr. Daniel Levitin's Book; This is Your Brain On Music(he's based here in Montréal at McGill University)great stuff! He wrote the book I(and surely many others) conceived of...long ago, cheers.
Busted! Actually, I was responding to the bloke above. I had one girlfriend in college who loved prog before knowing me and another one I spent 10 years chasing only to chase her into rehab! I have heard of the book you mention and I should (and will!) read it.
My initial interest in Fripp stemmed from his collaborative work and KC, my fascination with his thinking process, and the undeniable visceral quality of his innovative musicianship. Much like Bowie, he is an engaging scholar, however he most certainly does not deliver the gut-splitting comedic element and expressive qualities of la Bowie, who customarily bamboozles his audience with his frenetic mix of breezy wit and sharp intellect.
I appreciate how gracious Bob is here, when you(little upstarts)challenge him! I heartily agree with your gender analysis, the XY chromosome carriers certainly outrepresent the XX as proggers, not being a progger myself per say, my tastes are foremost eclectic, and Fripp(by virtue of his collective oeuvre)certainly represents abundantly within that parameter.
I may be dumb, but what is he talking about? Robert's a fine guitarist, but I guess I should have expected someone weirder than me making his weird music.
Not dumb, my friend. Mr. Fripp was heavily into a UK philosopher, JG Bennett. Recordings from Bennett's lectures are prominent on Fripps first solo album, "Exposure" which he was promoting at the time. Over my head, as well, but entertaining!
Yeah, I hope he doesn't talk like that to people today. He played with Peter Buck recently in Bill Reiflin's Slow Music, and I don't think Peter would understand him either. But you are right, this whole thing is pretty entertaining and intense in a strange way.
The King Crimson fans and the wives of ALL his fans have never understood him, and he sez, its OK! At his last solo LI gig, he thanked wives and girlfriends for enduring the first 'scape, but they could go out and have a cocktail if they wanted- many did, and it was OK! The gals got a great applause.
Or the Krimson fan from a 80's bootleg who keeps screaming "louder! LOUDER!"
Fripp: "To the gentleman who is asking us to play louder- Sir, I would like you to please listen more attentively."
Hmm... My gal and her mother adore Crimson, but I guess I can see how alot of women wouldn't get it. Not saying women are not smart enough, but women and men are different.
And they seem to have played loud enough back then. Loudness doesn't help anything but project mistakes.
Haha Fripp's answers are the opposite of concise. I have to admit, I lost him on a couple of the longer ones during this interview.

Robert Fripp is a man.
Robert Fripp is a human being.
Robert Fripp is intelligent.
End of story!

He can discuss things in any way he likes.
He's Robert f@cking Fripp. He invented half the sounds you've ever enjoyed in rock music.
