  • I have never done this, but don't you have reserves like in skydiving.

    He seemed to be high once he got away from the cliff, could he not just have let go and pulled his reserve?

    (It's a serious question, in case it is actually quite a stupid thing to ask).

  • @TheMissionkill Paragliders fly with reserve chutes. Always one and sometimes two. The problem is they are attached to the harness, and he wasn't!

  • @smelled interesting idea though if you could hold on tight enough throwing the reserve would at least stop the climb and get you heading down

    

  • Yes,Kewskii,thats sounds feasable,but keep in mind,our subject was panicking greatly as he lifted off,so his muscles probably locked into a death grip,as he proceeded to shit himself all the way to the rooftops!!!!!LOL

  • the thing to do is: when clear of terrain- let go of the brakes and lean back- head down feet up - the shoulder straps will hold you in, while HOOKING your feet on riser/lines so you dont flip around and become airbore- THEN STRAP IN and lean forward again - get on the controls and fly as normal! while cursing yourself...

  • Come on , if you are NOT able to get back in your seat , THROW the damn RESCUE !! While flying forward without any twists, it will inflate easily and slowly brings down the pilot . The middle line, which holds the the pilot squeezes genitals and can cause brutal pain , so don't wait until you pass off !!!

  • @submelon8 He had zero control at all, all the pilot could do was hold on with the straps under his shoulders and that is that.. he was 100% at the mercy of the wind.

  • @WowMike2002 He could have done very little steering by weight shifting, but that is a very hard thing for someone struggling to hold on and save his life. I am glad that he succeeded!

  • If you're going to get into the harness, get into it ALL THE WAY!!!! It's either all or nothing when it comes to getting into a harness.

  • You should be able to keep one arm down, reach up with the other hand and grip the riser. then reach up with the other hand, hold onto as high as you can reach and lift yourself into the harness. You cant really manage to get both hands on the risers because when you try to lift with the one hand on the riser it causes a large weight shift. However just holding the harness with the other hand is enough to get in.

  • I have done this twice, but pivot prefectly in my harness, from torpedo, to seated position. MUCH to be said about this pivot point, as I do not really have a vertical position. I'm leaning foward on the chest strap, and simply lean back, rotate, pivot, whatever you wish to call it, into a perfectly seated position in my harness. I have learned much since then, but we are human, and even experienced pilots make this mistake. Please, consider this pivot point carefully when buying a harness!

  • So he was hanging by his armpits the whole time. OMG that is scary. I just started hang gliding so if I feel lazy for even a sec about my hang check I will just think of this video. It is scary how the simple things in these sports are what can make them dangerous. Get it into my head ---- Pre-Flight checks are the most important things you do before you fly.........CHECK lol.

  • 3 mistakes:

    1) if you're gonna get in the harness, don't get in halfway. Fullly strapped or not at all.

    2) pre-flight check?

    3) practice buckling leg harness in midair by throwing legs over the risers.

    This is epic fail but I'm happy to see him live and learn.

  • This happened to someone close who was not so lucky!! Believe me it's very difficult to get in your harness after takeoff without leg straps on. We actually started hanging out harnesses (high up) and hang from our arm pits - to practice in a safe environment. Then swing around (difficult) and hook your legs around the risers - gliding in your harness. Hour armpits will be red/blue and very sore - but try it out, it might save you one day!! Best yet, do your safety checks every time.

  • This is the reason why one should always strap in completely or not at all !! Remember this rule, once you're wearing your harness, you have to be fully strapped in. Or leave it.

  • If he would lean back and hook his legs on his lines he could reposition himself back in his seat and fasten up. everyone should practice this technique.

  • I wondered if the guys lifted his sail before he was ready.He is being supported by his armpits not his butt where he should be. He can't steer because he can't pull down when his arms have all the load.scary. Bad -not having someone inspect your rig before hand.

  • The reserve is on the harness not on the pilot's pocket. In a modern harness the pilots cant forget to strap the leg because the leg straps are connected the others straps. I think he should put his weight on the rear side and try Big Ears and not in that position in which all the weight is on his legs. Good luck

  • If this is the same as a skydivers rig the leg straps are part of the harness. The parachute is attached to the harness...your body is suspended within the harness to the descending parachute. If you do not step into the leg straps you are simply not 'in' your harness. Your whole body weight will be hanging onto the steering toggles of the parachute. At the beginning of the video it mentions a 15 minute (with no inputs) flight to the ground. Thats 15 minutes clingin on literally for your life.

  • Scorpac, it means you are not wearing the seat beat of your harness, he had very little control of his glider. I have heard very few people survive this, he is really lucky to be alive. just like not seat belting yourselve when driving a auto, the only difference is you not flying thousands of feet into the air.

  • there is a vid on the tube where someone doesnt strap in,,,,,but lukily lets go befor he goes with it. the pilot just stood there rather stupid looking and the glider just went off on its own....even landed itself real well too.

  • I'm so glad the pilot was alright despite having broken his leg. I was set on doing hang gliding or paraglidng at one point but this makes me think twice to some degree.

  • Hang gliding is infinitely safer...but when you don't hook in, it isn't good in either sport.

  • Hang gliding is in some ways safer, but there are some seriously more risky features to it. I saw a person take off and his arms were simply too short to stay level. This cannot happen in a praglider.

  • Someone that is ill-fitted to their glider doesn't make hang gliding more risky. Search for 'paraglider collapse' on YouTube. Hang gliders don't collapse in turbulence, for the most part, they fly through it. Paragliders don't have the airspeed needed for heavier conditions...and since you can't see the air you're flying in, I'd rather be in a wing that can handle most conditions you might encounter.

  • Of the incidents I have seen, none was more scary than the one where the persons arms were too short. He had two choices 1 let go! 2 hang on brace for face plant 450m below -needles to say he broke bones during the face plant.

    A paraglider will fly itself if you let go. It will land in a tiny chilli patch surrounded by electric wires when you are out of options, Its also a good sleeping blanket when no one can find you in the forest late at night. OK yes I admit to landing backwards many times.

  • P2 Oh yes and guess what type of glider went to rescue the patient after that. The crash landing site was very lumpy looking with large rocks all around. Only a paraglider pilot would dare make the rescue attempt.

  • true..and hang gliders come in with high speed for landing..so many hang glider pilots break arms and legs simply they flare at the wrong time and bang...so, both aircraft have their plus and minus...

  • You're describing pilot skill....or lack thereof. When conditions change and you need to penetrate, a hang glider can handle the conditions. A hang glider can generally fly through turbulence...you better hope you have altitude to recover from a turbulence-induced collapse in a paraglider. A hang glider might never use his reserve chute...a paraglider can expect to need to use one.....BIG safety difference.

  • you have a point when it comes to turbulence. a paraglider should be flown within its parameters. if it is gusty, you do not fly. also, active flying and choice of glider decides how safe a paraglider is. to say a paraglider is less safe than a hang glider would be wrong. a hang glider might use the reserve at any moment, just like a paraglider. i 6000+ flights on a paraglider, never used the reserve. but could happen tomorrow..or never.

  • As Ian Currer once said " the bit of equipment that mostly lets you down is the bit between your ears" i found this very hard to watch but it hits home and thats got to be good. im also glad that the pilot survived, a fellow pilot of mine didnt.thanks for having the courage to post this.

  • He is a very lucky man. I looked in Taiwan several years ago. It forgot straps in the same way as him, and 200m dropped. It was a very shocking sad accident.

  • Why didn't he strap in while flying? It isn't that hard and I know it I fly myself.

    Try to use just that little bit of common sense you have.

  • Because he was hanging by his armpits; his leg straps were somewhere around his waist; and he couldn't use his hands without falling. Try it hanging a couple of feet off the ground and you'll see. What you can do is swing your feet up and behind your risers, which will push you into the seat; then do up your leg straps.

  • Was this incident at Mount Maunganui? One of nices place on the north island to fly. One more reason when we view this video to remind oursleves about safety checks before launch. I always use the check-check wordings, I check and check again.

  • he forgot to close the 2 leg straps, hence the term strapping in.

    This means that he slides out of the harness, being held only by the chest strap. It is very difficult to try to hang in there (no I haven't tried it yet) never mind to try and fly the paraglider down to the landing area.

  • In the UK take-offs are generally not that high and allow for easy slope landings the pilot can then walk up the hill back to take off- leg straps are undone for comfort. Sometimes when the Pilot reaches the compression a zone a strong gust/thermal can inflate the glider and effectively launch it.

    Also I have twice witnessed low airtime pilots slipping out of their harness and fall (thankfully only a couple of metres ) to the ground because of poor pre-flights.

  • In other words.... PG accidents as seen in this type of situation in general RESULT from failures/lack off HP&L training . (HP&L = Human Performance and Limitations) It is easy to train students to a standard that results in as much as a 95% reduction in accident rates. (UK BHPA typical PG accident rates as 'base line'/ten year period)

  • I don't mean to be the token condescending asshole of youtube, but it really is not that hard to sit back in the harness, or even slide yourself back by doing a slight 'pull up'. I'm not saying that this might happen to me someday, but these are SIT harnesses people, just sit back into it and strap in. not that hard. not only was this situation entirely avoidable by pre-flight checks, the pilot also could have gotten back into his harness and had a good flight. or am I missing something?

  • Not always that easy to lean forward to do up even one leg strap in this situation. Although the on-shore coastal breeze should have been relatively benign,it seems as though the pilots harness attitude was fairly upright so he may have slipped through the chest harness. Yes - pre-flights are essential, however easy to forget: I once reached cloud base only to notice that the mailon on my A-riser was undone and bending and I had no reserve in those days) .

  • Just noticed: his chest strap is undone as well - this will effect the performance of the glider too as the risers are further apart than they should be. All thing's considered this is not a good position to be in.

  • chest strap undone CAN effect the glider flight and controlability, but mostly in positive ways. I have an acro harness, and I prefer the chest strap out entirely. (essentially undone). it make weight shift easier, and the glider talks to you better.

  • Well, but when you're hanging in a glider just with some straps under your armpits, you'd be very glad if at least the chest strap would be holding things together. If not, you have to put even more force into your shoulders to prevent yourself from falling down.

  • I have been at cloudbase once to notice a mallion was not open, but nearly. I have to let go of brakes in heavy thermic conditions to tighten it, and only got it another twist. i forgot about it after landing. luckaly remembered before next flight. I guess checking every mallion is just not on the pre flight list

  • Excuse me, you are an IDIOT. Many people die from this, and they would certainly have considered "just sitting back" in the last minutes of their lives if it was easy. Don't forget the seat board is dangling behind your shoulders -- not behind your ass -- and you can't move your arms if you don't want drop half a mile.

    Sorry for calling you an idiot, but this is really one thing that people die from, it IS hard to sit back. I know what I am talking about.

  • I've flown paragliders for several years. Please help me understand why this pilot was not able to use his brake controls and after leaving the hill simply attach his leg straps and be on with it in a standard configuration with a proper landing???

  • He has slid down in the harness and is hanging on with his hands. If he reaches up to grab the brakes, he will fall to his death.

  • He did not need to keep his hands off the controls. He had his chest strap and his weight was supported by his harness seat. He could and should have flown the glider to a proper landing.

  • This this is a lot easier to do than most people think especially if your learning and you undo the straps to walk back up the hill.

    Am i right in saying that newer kit has got a strap to the chest and leg to prevent this.
