There are more stories about where the name Panama hat came from. The one I was told while buying a Panama hat in Guayaquil, Ecuador, during my stay there last December was that Theodore Roosevelt visited the construction of the Panama Canal wearing a Panama hat. The picture taken then went worldwide and it became the Panama hat.

Yeah, the traditional Panama hat is 100% ecuadorian. Ecuador produce the best "toquilla" straw in the world for making it.
