Beautiful video rhonda. Now, with the great things you said, I can easily say that I have met many theists who would easily think that you are evil or possessed for saying things like thinking freely from superstition and seeing the world as it really it. It really is amazing.
And portoxali, how is belief in something without any evidence whatsoever NOT NAIVE? And no, christians do NOT understand the contradictions in their own bible. The christians who do are now atheist.
thejugglenaut91, Thank you for your kind comment. For too many years there have been people who imagine they have some divine knowledge and bully others by belittling them. The world is a beautiful place when we see it for what it really is and not from some dark, oppressive narrow-minded, superstitious view. Some people don't like others to think freely, when they are prisoners of their own fears due to their unwillingness to see beyond the veil of superstition.
my goodness so true, I wish we could talk face to face. The potential for intellectual, cultural, and spiritual expansion is limitless when two open minds converse.
Do not forget that Russell was agnostic himself and his fierce criticims was mainly directed towards the religious dogmas and church authority, while on the philosophical plane he was more sceptic than atheist. Your views about the mythic character of the religioous beliefs are too naive, i can say that such arguments are no less ungrounded and mythical as the religious claims against which these are used.
Portoxali, Christian Dogma dictates I'll be sent to hell for not accepting Jesus. Are you biblically illiterate or simply NAIVE in thinking you can cherry pick? Religion is based on myth. Prove otherwise!
I'm free of superstition & that's a fact not an argument!
As far as reading Russell's works - Those were his words verbatim. His personal life history wasn't discussed. The claim whether he was or wasn't an atheist wasn't made in this video at all. Your comment is without merit.
i meant that you ground your criticism on the simbolic interpretation that is given in the holy scripture and is aggitated by the church authority. Such interpretaton is definitelly very naiive and lacks theological and philosophical depth. However you attack this very simple principles and use them to show how rediculous they seem to be, giving supporting arguments from Russell's work, that is what i found to be naive interpretations from your side.
If you consider these principles to be understood straightforwardly, without investigating its ethical and philosophical meanings, you are deeply wrong in your assumptions (much like other atheists) as almost every literate religious person nowadays understands contradictions given in the symbolic writing style of the holy scripture. One sided understanding of the foundations of religious thought always distorts the meaning of the religious doctrines, that are far more complex than you may think
portoxali, I haven't met many 'literate religious people.' Most hardly know what is in their bible or its history. I was a Christian most of my life. Through much research and study on the history of religion and the bible itself, I finally became an atheist. Regardless, it doesn't take effort to understand that religious thinking is a waste of precious time. As far as ethical meaning or theological depth, what you are touting boils down to blind faith in a cruel god.
Atheists who have already written off God are as uninformed as those who have never questioned his existance their entire lives. I don't know if it ever occured to athiests that perhaps religion is more of a blessing than a curse; it instill hope and morality in the masses. Now if there wes a more feasable belief or an equally sufficient (such as buddhism, hinduism, etc.) I could fullheartedly understand, but to SLAY God for a more favorable nothing is quite out of my comprehension.
I am an Agnostic and until there is undisputable proof of Gods nonexistance I shall remain an Agnostic. It also might due you some good to stray away from Russell for a little for a more favorable Kant and Kierkegaard. As a logician Russell is pure genius, but many of his meddlings into ethical philosophy and metaphysics do nothing but surround him with logical fallacy and prejudicial conjecture, and many unargued bias (primarily with History of Philosophy and Why I am not a Christian).
darkshadyfigure, I have read Kant and Kierkegaard years ago. It's good to read everything we can and enjoy the opinions of all the great thinkers. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and thank you for sharing yours.
At the age of eighteen, however, shortly before I went to Cambridge, I read Mill's Autobiography, where I found a sentence to the effect that his father taught him the question "Who made me?" cannot be answered, since it immediately suggests the further question "Who made God?" i wouldnt so much jump to the opposite non-sequitor that is athiesm. logic becuase of infinity and the capability of infinity to be within a greater infinity and so on cannot answer First Cause. which points to a suggestion that our logic may be founded on unsubstantial grounds. a sort of logocentrism or ontotheology.
either God was eternal, but what made the premises of eternity, or something popped out of nothing, which only exhibits our universe and not all possible existence. the ontological arugment i would say is highly inductive, or in other words a mere assumption on the grounds of our sense of order, but we already know that the true nature of existence is outside the bounds of logic. i would then have to say that pure agnosticism is the correct universal stance on the matter.
Hi gen6k, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. When you mention a correct universal stance, it becomes subjective. Its fine to state you dont know something exists that cannot be proven to exist, whether it be gods, satyrs, fairies or unicorns. In relation to religious dogma, however, which introduces hell & torture, its the tease they use upon people of not knowing which keeps them bound to the illogical. The nature of existence to date is best determined by natural cause to avoid semantics.
Nice recital Rhonda9. Russell is amazing. As a young mathematician and philosopher I think we need more people like you in the world. The Christian God is certainly a depotistic/undemocratic concept that is extremely outdated, a concept which as a truth can no longer hold convenient and conventional in our modern society. Remember this: the most fear thing in the world is rational thought. Have a good day Rhonda9. Peace and Love.
cfountaine1, It's perplexing why the most feared thing in the world is rational thought. You would think people would want to embrace it so they wouldn't be bound to their irrational fears any longer. Thanks so much for commenting and the kind words. Peace and love to you also! :)
What this video shows is that atheists (if Rhonda9 is anything to go by) have a spirituality and an inner peace surpassing that of religious people.
"Surpassing"? Yes. Because an atheist seeks to understand the world through Reason, which, by way of the human mind, is the glory of the Universe.
And without the fear - cowardly fear - which seems to be the driving force behind most religions. These sound more like intellectual dishonesty and emotional enslavement than 'spirituality' to me.
I think you have a point here. People usually think that atheists are unhappy and angry people who are incapable of loving others or life, but Rhonda proves the opposite. At least that is the impression I got from her videos:)
AbrekGirl, I think that the vast majority of atheists love others, and life. But they keep their beliefs to themselves, and don't feel compelled to shout from the rooftops. Especially when they live in communities and countries where the "official" line is the religious one. Rhonda9 is secure enough in herself to give voice in a way that most atheists in her country - probably for social acceptance reasons - are reluctant to do.
To see your free intelligence is inspiring. Living where I (an atheist) do, in Oklahoma, I am surrounded by such fundamentalist lunacy that it shames even the name of Christianity.
I am glad there are such lights as you, and that's why I'm moving away from here.
naturalsupernatural, Thank you for your kind words. I am wondering if there is anywhere in the US one can move, where this can be avoided. It seems to perpetuate everywhere. I know exactly how you feel.
This is a wonderful video. I think fear is the largest reason why people continue to embrace religion. The absurdity of religion has been obvious for a long time but people are afraid to face that reality. We can't conquer their fears for them but we can show them that life has value even without fantasy, especially without fantasy.
TiltingTheBalance, I agree with you. The harsh realities of life and the fear of the unknown perpetuate that fantasy based hope for something better. People do live in fear and religion utilizes that fear to retain the flock, by promising that which can never be proven. Peddling faith is the perfect hoax and a lucrative living for the clergy.
i hereby coin a term 'intellectual salvation' for what russel teaches us.i believe that contentment is real happiness.why should one feel the need to go against the norms if he or she is content with what is useful and is in hand too.i believe that these doctrines are therapies for men and r as effective as would be any chemical or biological one.this is my point of view and is definitly subject to change if there is any reason
i like the way of ur presentation but i have something to ask about this philosophy.will this world be a better place if russel replaces relegion? is it possible to educate all the people upto the level that they 'd understand the myth of relegion and the reality of man? if no then how 'd u control a world where there is unequall and unjustified distribution of many things.

DrljazKhan, People can rise above situations and do the right thing. We don't need a handbook for realizing if we work together and help each other, it benefits all of us.
Beautiful video and a long overdue intro to Russell for me. Been meaning to read him for ages now. There's such a lot to take in when you are no longer a 'person of one book!' Exhilarating! That passage was wonderful. To think I once distained Bertrand Russell as a defiant atheist! Yet had never heard a word he wrote till now -- how telling... !!SUBSCRIBED!!
Good knowledge for those of us not familiar with this rel. I once came across user "Gisburne2000" and watched his work. I thought you might just check that out, may be you already have. He had a video with some interesting points on why his account was suspended etc and so on. Well, Rhonda, do or make videos that you love making. My best wishes to you!
k6yardotcom, Thank you for commenting. I had watched all of Gisburne's videos a long time ago and bought his book when it first came out. The subject matter of religion has always been of great interest to me.
I think it is a nice reading too. Russell's views on 'worship', are in accord with mine. I am not a religious person, but I have my beliefs. So I emphasise with Russel. Thank you Rhonda.
To have it pumped into one`s brain, when just a child, that one was born with an original sin and will go to a burning hell if one doesn`t commit to the bible and church, is the
enjoythevoyage, I think most of our great freethinkers of the past would have never expected it to take us so long. We still have a long way to go. Thank you for your comment. :)
Thank you so much for this powerful gift! It was exactly what I needed to hear today. I respect all beliefs but grow so weary of hyper-religious people insulting and bashing each other in the name of their concept of god that I read time and again on YouTube and elsewhere. I feel like we are falling into a post-Enlightenment dark age. Thanks for being a light.
One of my role models, very underated! Great vid! To make people think is the hardest thinhg to do..I read somewhere that ·In order to see things as they are we need to have a different point of view· plus you're hot! XD sorry I had to say that.........peace
neutralious, "In order to see things as they are we need to have a different point of view" - what an awesome point made. Thanks for the kind words, you are very sweet. ;)
bjarczyk, I agree. Russell and Ingersoll are great reads, because they get to the point. History of philosophy is an amazing subject. An eye opener. Have a great day.
What a wonderful vid...I am fascinated by Russell's atomism...As well as what he writes about his beliefs...It must be great to be in a place where it is so beautiful...England is not like that today.
cosmicpilgrim, I was sad to see that your account was no longer there. I thought your channel was awesome. If you come back to youtube to read this... Please let me know if you reopen an account so I can sub. Have a great day.
Just think of all of the fascinating, interesting people you will burn in Hell with because they shrugged off religious dogma (not necessarily atheists). They include Ralph Vaughan Williams, Mrs Pankhurst, Carl Sagan, Madonna, Frank Zappa, Robert Ingersoll, Clarence Darrow, Gloria Steinem, Uma Thurman, Jodie Foster, Pierre Boulez, Phyllis Diller, the Beatles, Woody Allen..and the beat goes on.
IMO worst thing that happened to what Moses wrote is that Mohammad 'plagiarized' the Old Testament and was able to convinced more superstitious believers.
ParadiseEarth1, Moses didn't write the bible and may have been a mythical character at best. (see Sargon) Moses couldn't have written about his own death. Scholars know that there were multiple sources who wrote the Pentateuch.
Rhonda you make sense to me, however I was brought up RC I have to agree with you on the burning in hell part etc. I will deal with that part when I push over . So for now I a will live a peaceful life and still pray with my mums rosary beads . Ask any one it is hard to escape the RC up bringing and I can not explain. I want the blessing of the priest before I go to meet my maker. Does this make sense? I do like your philosophy though.
Lindamac, I understand. I was brought up RC also. I went to Catholic school. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your views. I loved the video you and LittleMickyFingers made. Dave and I both got a kick out of that. Thanks Linda!
Excellent! And we know that that ignorant pen unfortunately gave an offshoot of three religions that's not surprisingly creating friction, as our world gets smaller.*****
ParadiseEarth1, to read and research and not let others convince them without searching on their own. Then it is up to them. Thanks for your comment. Always nice to hear from you.
Would be a good idea to have an in-depth debate. In the end all they will always fall back to is that it's faith and a blind one indeed many will keep believing.
It's not to say they give up their faith as long as they also keep it private and not impose controls based on a regional story unless it's practical and does not require blind faith.
All the 3 majors believed in that story Moses authored around 1200 BC, all they have to do is to really read Genesis and realize the impossibility. Blind-faith will be dangerous to humanity once fanatics from all sides finally acquired nuclear weapons etc.
CrucieFiction, I agree. I discovered Lewis and Joseph McCabe a long while ago. Positiveatheism (dot) org has Joseph Lewis and also Joseph McCabe & so many others to read. The secularweb is a wonderful resource, as you've suggested. I've used that many times over the years. Thank you for your input! :)
This could be a big problem for politicians - how do you control non-believing rational people? Better stomp that out! Even Christ said the 2nd greatest commandment was to love your neighbor as yourself. Does this mean that those who want to see you burn in Hell also wish that for themselves? or, does it mean they aren't really living up to being Christian? Maybe that ties into the debasement thing..... Anyway, love your kind spirit and abilit to respond with love to attempted control by fear.
"There is something feeble and contemptible about a man who cannot face the perils of life without the help of comfortable myths. Almost inevitably some part of him is aware that they are myths and that he believes them only because they are comfortable. But he dare not face this thought. Moreover, since he is aware, however dimly, that his opinions are not rational, he becomes furious when they are disputed". - Bertrand Russell
Christianity is evil. It degrades human beings from birth. It tells us that we all deserve eternal punishment, simple because the first humans ate an apple from a tree!
Your welcome. My parents were not very religious growing up. They didn't take me to church every Sunday. However, They taught me about heaven and hell because that is what each generation has taught. I remember having bad dreams about Hell. Just in the last few years have I realized how unjust hell is.
connerjd, People don't think about the concept of hell as incompatible in conjunction with a doctrine that proclaims love. They are brainwashed at a young age to accept it. It is dysfunctional and unhealthy. Hell, like heaven, is an ingrained and accepted doctrinal precept.
I know because I once believed the same thing. I use to think that hell was God's justice, and at the time it made sense to me. Hell caused me a lot of emotional problems.
connerjd, Many people go through life fearing hell, both young and old. Christians still fear throughout their lives that they may not live up to the standards of god and they will be sent to hell. One slip up and all can be lost for eternity. Hell has been used as a very effective fear tactic and motivator to force people to conform and to control them.
This conform and control concepts works very well. The people who created these concepts were smart. They knew that they could take advantage of the gullible. These fearful lives are wasted ones. Yes, one slip up, especially for those who don't believe in once saved always saved. That was my belief when I was a christian.
charlesworthd, to ask where evil comes from is a subjective question. It can include many things. Years ago people thought mental illness was caused by evil spirits. We know this is not true today. Certainly much evil has come from the minds of man and their superstitions, prejudices and ignorance on matters that religion has all too often fueled.
I get my concept of evil based upon an objective moral law that I believe is given from God. How is evil subjective? If I were to say, chop up a young child with an axe, you would call it an evil act... But why? If it is subjective, I might hold that it is not at all evil. I don't think there is any subjective reason that hold up for evil in the heart of man. I would be interested to see what your response is.
Also, I was wondering still what you thought of the person Jesus of Nazareth.
I just watched this for the sixth or seventh time. I'm starting to like this BR stuff. Ya'll done got me itching to read some atheist stuff. I'm going to buy "God Is Not Great" today. (I've always liked Hitchens' columns in Vanity Fair). Also, you look beautiful in this video.
A nice summer day ! A nice summer day for the free like you! And Me! Have you read 'The Time machine' I bet you have! Where do you go after you have ben gobbled up by Morlocks? And does it even matter?
You should read the book, 'Jesus for the Non-Religious" by John Shelby Spong. He paints a wonderful picture of Jesus that is much needed in these modern distorted times. I understand how you feel but please don't blame "christian doctrine" it is the evil men who have ruined christ's words since they day they were written.
How do you know if the words changed were good or evil? Did Jesus really advocate beating slaves (as it says in NT)? Did Jesus really preach to love your neighbor? Did he preach both? Did he even exist? You don't need to be told what is right and wrong from dubious sources; most people will instinctivly pick it up from society/common sense.
you said "evil men" have "ruined christ's words". How do you know what changed and what didn't. Also, I asked what is the point of having a potentially mythical Jesus as a role model, when people know how to be good anyway (from society/culture/etc).
Ok, i think i understand now prophet wrangler. Well St. Augustine wrote a book called 'The Teacher' and in it he basically sums up that Christ is the Inner Teacher. This isn't just a religious point but more of a philosophical point. he just uses the word Christ for his idea's, because obviously there are cultures that have no clue who this Jesus person is....
part two.....He's arguing that we don't get our morals just from authority or some societal norm. But we have to consult our Inner Teacher. (which includes reason). and if we contemplate long enough we should eventually know the right thing and the light of truth. you could call it Meditation....
Don't take my word's though, read the book and see what he means in all this. It's a very important book. so it's clear that Christ's words can be read more than one way and that sadly he is vulgarised more often than not. you can't just take it literally, because the bible has been translated from ideas to hebrew to greek to latin to english, so you have to go through all those languages to get to the ideas.
Talsnesss, I have known about Spong for a long time. Jesus introduced hell and no Christian can sugar coat it. The Bible, is God's word according to any Christian. This is where Christians often try and dilute things, because they know the final judgment of hell is too cold and cruel for any human to imagine.
I'd rather burn in hell for all eternity, than drown in this delusion. Life isn't worth nothing if it is not your own to live. If hell is my fate & I'm gonna toast, then I make a toast to freedom!
"It is true that the modern Christian is less robust, but that is not thanks to Christianity; it is thanks to the generations of freethinkers, who, from the renaissance to the present day, have made Christians ashamed of many of their traditional beliefs."
"It is amusing to hear the modern Christian telling you how mild and rationalistic Christianity really is and ignoring the fact that all its mildness and rationalism is due to the teaching of men who in their own day were persecuted by all orthodox Christians. Nobody nowadays believes that the world was created in 4004 b.c.; but not so very long ago skepticism on this point was thought an abominable crime....
"...It is no credit to the orthodox that they do not now believe all the absurdities that were believed 150 years ago. The gradual emasculation of the Christian doctrine has been effected in spite of the most vigorous resistance, and solely as the result of the onslaughts of freethinkers."
"It is indeed amazing to hear theists boast of the advancement in their religion. For example, some take pride that Christianity no longer accepts slavery as a norm. Others cite Christianity's abandonment of many archaic ideas, noting a moral and intellectual evolution. No doubt, some progression within Christianity is noted, but then the question of the history of such progression must also be delineated."
I need to read some of these books you read they seem to be really good. Hey if you are there i guess i will be there to. hopefully we will get a chance to talk there. LOL

AbrekGirl 3 years ago
AbrekGirl, I think that the vast majority of atheists love others, and life. But they keep their beliefs to themselves, and don't feel compelled to shout from the rooftops. Especially when they live in communities and countries where the "official" line is the religious one. Rhonda9 is secure enough in herself to give voice in a way that most atheists in her country - probably for social acceptance reasons - are reluctant to do.

This is a wonderful video. I think fear is the largest reason why people continue to embrace religion. The absurdity of religion has been obvious for a long time but people are afraid to face that reality. We can't conquer their fears for them but we can show them that life has value even without fantasy, especially without fantasy.
TiltingTheBalance 3 years ago

Beautiful video and a long overdue intro to Russell for me. Been meaning to read him for ages now. There's such a lot to take in when you are no longer a 'person of one book!' Exhilarating! IMO worst thing that happened to what Moses wrote is that Mohammad 'plagiarized' the Old Testament and was able to convinced more superstitious believers.
ParadiseEarth1 4 years ago
ParadiseEarth1, Moses didn't write the bible and may have been a mythical character at best. (see Sargon) Moses couldn't have written about his own death. Scholars know that there were multiple sources who wrote the Pentateuch.

ParadiseEarth1 4 years ago
ParadiseEarth1, to read and research and not let others convince them without searching on their own. Then it is up to them. Thanks for your comment. Always nice to hear from you.
Rhonda9 4 years ago
Would be a good idea to have an in-depth debate. In the end all they will always fall back to is that it's faith and a blind one indeed many will keep believing.
It's not to say they give up their faith as long as they also keep it private and not impose controls based on a regional story unless it's practical and does not require blind faith.
ParadiseEarth1 4 years ago
ParadiseEarth1, I agree with you. And discussing religion with people who want to hold on to their superstition becomes a circular argument.
Rhonda9 4 years ago
All the 3 majors believed in that story Moses authored around 1200 BC, all they have to do is to really read Genesis and realize the impossibility. Blind-faith will be dangerous to humanity once fanatics from all sides finally acquired nuclear weapons etc.

Rhonda9 4 years ago
Your welcome. My parents were not very religious growing up. They didn't take me to church every Sunday. However, They taught me about heaven and hell because that is what each generation has taught. I remember having bad dreams about Hell. Just in the last few years have I realized how unjust hell is.
connerjd 4 years ago
connerjd, People don't think about the concept of hell as incompatible in conjunction with a doctrine that proclaims love. They are brainwashed at a young age to accept it. It is dysfunctional and unhealthy. Hell, like heaven, is an ingrained and accepted doctrinal precept.
Rhonda9 4 years ago
I know because I once believed the same thing. I use to think that hell was God's justice, and at the time it made sense to me. Hell caused me a lot of emotional problems.
connerjd 4 years ago
connerjd, Many people go through life fearing hell, both young and old. Christians still fear throughout their lives that they may not live up to the standards of god and they will be sent to hell. One slip up and all can be lost for eternity. Hell has been used as a very effective fear tactic and motivator to force people to conform and to control them.
Rhonda9 4 years ago
This conform and control concepts works very well. The people who created these concepts were smart. They knew that they could take advantage of the gullible. These fearful lives are wasted ones. Yes, one slip up, especially for those who don't believe in once saved always saved. That was my belief when I was a christian.

I was wondering what you think of the Person of Jesus? Do you admit that he really existed? Who was he?
Also, you referenced to good, hope, beauty, I would assume you would also admit evil. Where did it come from in your opinion?
charlesworthd 4 years ago
charlesworthd, to ask where evil comes from is a subjective question. It can include many things. Years ago people thought mental illness was caused by evil spirits. We know this is not true today. Certainly much evil has come from the minds of man and their superstitions, prejudices and ignorance on matters that religion has all too often fueled.
Rhonda9 4 years ago
I get my concept of evil based upon an objective moral law that I believe is given from God. How is evil subjective? If I were to say, chop up a young child with an axe, you would call it an evil act... But why? If it is subjective, I might hold that it is not at all evil. I don't think there is any subjective reason that hold up for evil in the heart of man. I would be interested to see what your response is.
Also, I was wondering still what you thought of the person Jesus of Nazareth.

GodlessLife 4 years ago
You should read the book, 'Jesus for the Non-Religious" by John Shelby Spong. He paints a wonderful picture of Jesus that is much needed in these modern distorted times. I understand how you feel but please don't blame "christian doctrine" it is the evil men who have ruined christ's words since they day they were written.
talsnesss 4 years ago
How do you know if the words changed were good or evil? Did Jesus really advocate beating slaves (as it says in NT)? Did Jesus really preach to love your neighbor? Did he preach both? Did he even exist? You don't need to be told what is right and wrong from dubious sources; most people will instinctivly pick it up from society/common sense.
prophetwrangler 4 years ago
i don't understand at all of what you just said.
talsnesss 4 years ago
you said "evil men" have "ruined christ's words". How do you know what changed and what didn't. Also, I asked what is the point of having a potentially mythical Jesus as a role model, when people know how to be good anyway (from society/culture/etc).
prophetwrangler 4 years ago
Ok, i think i understand now prophet wrangler. Well St. Augustine wrote a book called 'The Teacher' and in it he basically sums up that Christ is the Inner Teacher. This isn't just a religious point but more of a philosophical point. he just uses the word Christ for his idea's, because obviously there are cultures that have no clue who this Jesus person is....
talsnesss 4 years ago
part two.....He's arguing that we don't get our morals just from authority or some societal norm. But we have to consult our Inner Teacher. (which includes reason). and if we contemplate long enough we should eventually know the right thing and the light of truth. you could call it Meditation....
talsnesss 4 years ago
Don't take my word's though, read the book and see what he means in all this. It's a very important book. so it's clear that Christ's words can be read more than one way and that sadly he is vulgarised more often than not. you can't just take it literally, because the bible has been translated from ideas to hebrew to greek to latin to english, so you have to go through all those languages to get to the ideas.
talsnesss 4 years ago
Talsnesss, I have known about Spong for a long time. Jesus introduced hell and no Christian can sugar coat it. The Bible, is God's word according to any Christian. This is where Christians often try and dilute things, because they know the final judgment of hell is too cold and cruel for any human to imagine.
Rhonda9 4 years ago
I'm a Christian and i don't believe in hell.
talsnesss 4 years ago
talsness, that still doesn't change the words in the bible. According to the doctrine you must believe in hell. You are cherry picking.

"It is true that the modern Christian is less robust, but that is not thanks to Christianity; it is thanks to the generations of freethinkers, who, from the renaissance to the present day, have made Christians ashamed of many of their traditional beliefs."
-Bertrand Russell
Thanks Rhonda!
Truatheist 4 years ago
Here's more of it:
"It is amusing to hear the modern Christian telling you how mild and rationalistic Christianity really is and ignoring the fact that all its mildness and rationalism is due to the teaching of men who in their own day were persecuted by all orthodox Christians. Nobody nowadays believes that the world was created in 4004 b.c.; but not so very long ago skepticism on this point was thought an abominable crime....
ReliableInsider 4 years ago
More of Truatheist's Russell quotation:
"...It is no credit to the orthodox that they do not now believe all the absurdities that were believed 150 years ago. The gradual emasculation of the Christian doctrine has been effected in spite of the most vigorous resistance, and solely as the result of the onslaughts of freethinkers."
ReliableInsider 4 years ago
ReliableInsider, thank you so much for your input. That was excellent. :)

The conclusion of Truatheist's Russell quotation:
"It is indeed amazing to hear theists boast of the advancement in their religion. For example, some take pride that Christianity no longer accepts slavery as a norm. Others cite Christianity's abandonment of many archaic ideas, noting a moral and intellectual evolution. No doubt, some progression within Christianity is noted, but then the question of the history of such progression must also be delineated."
