I find it ironic that Aleister Crowley thought it necessary to ask for god's (Yahweh) permission before evoking demons. I never use the Bornless Rite myself, and neither did Solomon.

@Georgiominas1 And even if you ARE 100% sincere and honest with your intentions, working with conscious entities is always a crapshoot because, quite frankly, they won't respond if they just plain don't want to. They respond to energy and power and are easily distracted. Try sticking to something more mundane and everyday when you are getting used to casting sigils and forgo using conscious entities as middle-men to achieve objectives that you can just as well achieve on your own time.
@Georgiominas1 Candles and incense don't make spells work any better. They're meant to provide mood and symbolism to help you during the ritual. Lust of result is when you are consciously searching for something to happen and it detracts your mind from noticing what's really going on. So like I said, going thru the motions of a spell isn't the same as casting one. Demons and spirits don't like being patronized anymore than people do, and going thru the motions with no sincerity to it won't work.
@Georgiominas1 Okay, three things here - one, practice makes perfect. Two, sigils don't work from going through the motions of a spell, they work when you alter consciousness, which clearly did not happen in your case because nobody achieves that the first few times. It takes some effort. Three, you were expecting quite a lot to happen your on your first venture and were lusting for result, and that is the strongest distraction of all.. That's why I suggested you start with something pointless.
@Georgiominas1 Sigils can be used by anyone in virtually any way imaginable. They function on the most basic occult principles of the universe and are the "bare bones" you could say. Just about every old magical system throughout the ages - including the Goetia - can be boiled down to being just an elaborate, theatrical form of sigil magic. They all have a set of gods or spirits (functional sigils) that can be evoked/commanded (i.e. charged) by the elaborate rituals and words and garb.

@Georgiominas1 A good tactic to prevent the meaning of sigils from getting into your head is to make a batch of 5 or 10 at once, discard any trace of their meaning that you used to make them, and then stash them away for a few weeks. Come back to them when you've forgotten the meaning. Charging them is where you should do your own reading, cuz there's just too much possibility to go into here. This is where the real fun stuff comes in cuz the more personalized it is, the better it will work.
@Georgiominas1 Sigils are infinitely variable. If you have a spark for creativity, take advantage of it. Next either look up or devise a way to "charge" the sigil. This is the point where you must find that "magical" state of consciousness and focus that attention entirely on the sigil and try to shut out it meanin It's the hardest part of sigil casting because it can be very hard to find that uninterrupted focus at first. That's what rituals are generally used for, to keep the magician focused.

@Georgiominas1 Sure, try Sigil Magic first. It's easy and VERY customizable and works very well. First decide on something that you'd like to be the result. Pick something pointless and forgettable that you won't get emotionally attached to. Next, make an abstract representation of it. Most guides suggest taking your desire written in a clear sentence and making the letters into a picture. To simplify the process, drop repeat letters and maybe vowels if you want. It's just a matter of preference

@Georgiominas1 None of the demons, spirits, gods, etc from any culture have to exist to make magic work. They're just archetypal symbols for your unconscious mind to use to manifest your will. Read Oven-Ready Chaos by Phil Hine if you want a good modern-day perspective on how magic and occultism function. It's available as a PDF for free on the web.
I'll say this much - when I do magic, I see results. Historical/spiritual "legitimacy" is completely irrelevant. Try it! See if it works for you :)

@Georgiominas1 Whenever I've visually interacted with demons or spirits it's usually been via deep meditation or frankly just maintaining strong mind's eye visualization. I've yet to see them manifest in front of me in full physical splendor. However, I HAVE heard them speak to me (yep, as in hearing voices, just like a crazy person :P) and have seen traces of their presence appear and vanish spontaneously. Sometimes I even smell them... for me it was kind of a musty stale burnt chalk smell.

@Georgiominas1 To me it doesn't really matter what if anything about them is "real" or "unreal". Like I said, they're representative archetypes that symbolize the magician's will and intent. To do magic effective you really have to abandon the notion of an objective reality and not think about it so much. What's really important is achieving results. I've made my own "demons" and "spirits" and cast effective spells with those too. But I'm a Chaos magician - that means I mix and match systems.
@Georgiominas1 I've taken elements from the Goetia, Abramelin, the Cthulhu Mythos, Voodoo, Enochian magic, etc. and cobbled them together. Or just made my own system from scratch (I'm still amazed how much MORE effective that can be than sticking to a traditional system). All the ritual garb, the symbols, the demons, all that stuff is to help the magician focus his will and intent. Any perceived reality of these entities is just that - perceptual. They're real the magician for that purpose

Outside of ritual use, they may as well be comic book characters (which, by the way, are also fun to use in magic!). The reality of the entities (i.e. the "illusory" experience) is not what's important - it's that altered state of consciousness itself that brings out the perception of their reality that makes the magic work, not the entity itself.

@Georgiominas1 My friend, the honest truth here is that the only way to know for yourself if and how magic works is to just give it that old college try and see how it come across to you. Everyone perceives it a little differently and that's why we have so many systems today. Start off with something simple and not too convoluted and work up from there. There are lots of magical training syllabuses, both ancient and modern, out there for all manner of taste and preference.
@Georgiominas1 just for the record, I have seen Zeitgeist and loved every minute of it - the first part about the history behind religions is one my favorite parts. Personally, I don't the fact that religions are full of crap invalidates the idea that magical rituals can achieve real results. That's just me, though. This is gonna be long but I will share it with you and everyone else who comes here. In high shcool I began studying various forms of magick and in retrospect I was very novice and naive chaos magician. I had aquaintences from other arts, both of whom I met on the net and never have nor would see them in perso. needless to say 2 of these aquaintences informed me through their scrying and techniques that my current gf was screwing around me. There were days I would come home from school and go to sleep at 6 in the evening cuz I was so depressed and angry that I just wanted to sleep through it and get busy the next day. Any way after about a month of secretly cursing and despising this person (never done a ritual or incantation) she wound up in the hospital with an appendix that was about to burst.
The surgeons performed an emergency operation and said had she arrived an hour later it may have burst and she may have died. If that wasn't enough, about 2 weeks from returning from the hospital I went to visit out of kind heartedness, I found she had to go back for another surgery to remove a secondary infection she somehow aquired. Be careful what you wish for, because a month after that I was boxing at a gym and while hitting the heavy bag I managed to dislocate my ulna at the wrist
When I went to the local doc's office guess what? My now sickly ex's mother had taken a job there and was talkin to me as I waited and informed me that the night before one of their neices (a toddler) had been killed by a bookshelf falling over on her. Strange huh? Or was it all just coincidence?
To me, being there, knowing what went on in my head and what I was studying I can't deny that the 3 months it took to cycle that hate and even to the point it returned to me was the work of some force
Beyond my control, afterall I never really intentionally did anything (methods as you put it) to cause any of this with the exception of having a heart full of rage and burning a picture or two.

This isn't even the whole story, I've had some VERY strange things happen to me when just practicing invocations and what not I even made a friends dog piss itself by just clinching my fist in front of it

if you want to use magick or evocation to win the lottery, you're much better off divining for the numbers and then going and getting a ticket. Trying to force the numbers to change in your favor is essentially working against the powerful collective will of everyone who bought a ticket. I guess perhaps it could work that way if you summon a demon or a spirit for every person that bought a ticket. (millions of people) but nah, I think you should do whatever you would do to divine for the numbers

They respond to energy and power and are easily distracted. Try sticking to something more mundane and everyday when you are getting used to casting sigils and forgo using conscious entities as middle-men to achieve objectives that you can just as well achieve on your own time.

@Georgiominas1 Candles and incense don't make spells work any better. They're meant to provide mood and symbolism to help you during the ritual. Lust of result is when you are consciously searching for something to happen and it detracts your mind from noticing what's really going on. So like I said, going thru the motions of a spell isn't the same as casting one. Demons and spirits don't like being patronized anymore than people do, and going thru the motions with no sincerity to it won't work.

Two, sigils don't work from going through the motions of a spell, they work when you alter consciousness, which clearly did not happen in your case because nobody achieves that the first few times. It takes some effort. Three, you were expecting quite a lot to happen your on your first venture and were lusting for result, and that is the strongest distraction of all.. That's why I suggested you start with something pointless.

Just about every old magical system throughout the ages - including the Goetia - can be boiled down to being just an elaborate, theatrical form of sigil magic. They all have a set of gods or spirits (functional sigils) that can be evoked/commanded (i.e. charged) by the elaborate rituals and words and garb.

@Georgiominas1 A good tactic to prevent the meaning of sigils from getting into your head is to make a batch of 5 or 10 at once, discard any trace of their meaning that you used to make them, and then stash them away for a few weeks. Come back to them when you've forgotten the meaning. Charging them is where you should do your own reading, cuz there's just too much possibility to go into here. This is where the real fun stuff comes in cuz the more personalized it is, the better it will work.

@Georgiominas1 Sigils are infinitely variable. If you have a spark for creativity, take advantage of it. Next either look up or devise a way to "charge" the sigil. This is the point where you must find that "magical" state of consciousness and focus that attention entirely on the sigil and try to shut out it meanin It's the hardest part of sigil casting because it can be very hard to find that uninterrupted focus at first. That's what rituals are generally used for, to keep the magician focused.

@Georgiominas1 Sure, try Sigil Magic first. It's easy and VERY customizable and works very well. First decide on something that you'd like to be the result. Pick something pointless and forgettable that you won't get emotionally attached to. Next, make an abstract representation of it. Most guides suggest taking your desire written in a clear sentence and making the letters into a picture. To simplify the process, drop repeat letters and maybe vowels if you want. It's just a matter of preference

@Georgiominas1 None of the demons, spirits, gods, etc from any culture have to exist to make magic work. They're just archetypal symbols for your unconscious mind to use to manifest your will. Read Oven-Ready Chaos by Phil Hine if you want a good modern-day perspective on how magic and occultism function. It's available as a PDF for free on the web.
I'll say this much - when I do magic, I see results. Historical/spiritual "legitimacy" is completely irrelevant. Try it! See if it works for you :)

@Georgiominas1 Whenever I've visually interacted with demons or spirits it's usually been via deep meditation or frankly just maintaining strong mind's eye visualization. I've yet to see them manifest in front of me in full physical splendor. However, I HAVE heard them speak to me (yep, as in hearing voices, just like a crazy person :P) and have seen traces of their presence appear and vanish spontaneously. Sometimes I even smell them... for me it was kind of a musty stale burnt chalk smell.

@Georgiominas1 To me it doesn't really matter what if anything about them is "real" or "unreal". Like I said, they're representative archetypes that symbolize the magician's will and intent. To do magic effective you really have to abandon the notion of an objective reality and not think about it so much. What's really important is achieving results. I've made my own "demons" and "spirits" and cast effective spells with those too. But I'm a Chaos magician - that means I mix and match systems.

@Georgiominas1 I've taken elements from the Goetia, Abramelin, the Cthulhu Mythos, Voodoo, Enochian magic, etc. and cobbled them together. Or just made my own system from scratch (I'm still amazed how much MORE effective that can be than sticking to a traditional system). All the ritual garb, the symbols, the demons, all that stuff is to help the magician focus his will and intent. Any perceived reality of these entities is just that - perceptual. They're real the magician for that purpose

Outside of ritual use, they may as well be comic book characters (which, by the way, are also fun to use in magic!). The reality of the entities (i.e. the "illusory" experience) is not what's important - it's that altered state of consciousness itself that brings out the perception of their reality that makes the magic work, not the entity itself.
Please keep in mind, this is according to Chaos Magic paradigms

@Georgiominas1 My friend, the honest truth here is that the only way to know for yourself if and how magic works is to just give it that old college try and see how it come across to you. Everyone perceives it a little differently and that's why we have so many systems today. Start off with something simple and not too convoluted and work up from there. There are lots of magical training syllabuses, both ancient and modern, out there for all manner of taste and preference.

@Georgiominas1 just for the record, I have seen Zeitgeist and loved every minute of it - the first part about the history behind religions is one my favorite parts. Personally, I don't the fact that religions are full of crap invalidates the idea that magical rituals can achieve real results. That's just me, though. Magic and religion aren't inextricably intertwined by any means and when it really comes down to it anyone with any set of beliefs or even no set at all can work magical operations

hmmmm some people insist there are entities and others (like myself) feel there is only energy in the ethereal plane but much like a tornado tears through a city and destroys homes yet leaves people living one would say "it was as if the storm had a mind or was a living thing". That's kind of how I see these works. As humans though we try and personify everything so that we can understand it and somehow control it. This is gonna be long but I will share it with you and everyone else who comes here. In high shcool I began studying various forms of magick and in retrospect I was very novice and naive chaos magician. I had aquaintences from other arts, both of whom I met on the net and never have nor would see them in perso. needless to say 2 of these aquaintences informed me through their scrying and techniques that my current gf was screwing around me. After a few weeks I found it to be true.

I was young at the time but this was my first gf, my first lay, the whole shebang. So needless to say I was pretty tore up over it. There were days I would come home from school and go to sleep at 6 in the evening cuz I was so depressed and angry that I just wanted to sleep through it and get busy the next day. Any way after about a month of secretly cursing and despising this person (never done a ritual or incantation) she wound up in the hospital with an appendix that was about to burst.

The surgeons performed an emergency operation and said had she arrived an hour later it may have burst and she may have died. If that wasn't enough, about 2 weeks from returning from the hospital I went to visit out of kind heartedness, I found she had to go back for another surgery to remove a secondary infection she somehow aquired. Be careful what you wish for, because a month after that I was boxing at a gym and while hitting the heavy bag I managed to dislocate my ulna at the wrist

When I went to the local doc's office guess what? My now sickly ex's mother had taken a job there and was talkin to me as I waited and informed me that the night before one of their neices (a toddler) had been killed by a bookshelf falling over on her. Strange huh? Or was it all just coincidence?
To me, being there, knowing what went on in my head and what I was studying I can't deny that the 3 months it took to cycle that hate and even to the point it returned to me was the work of some force

Beyond my control, afterall I never really intentionally did anything (methods as you put it) to cause any of this with the exception of having a heart full of rage and burning a picture or two.
The power of the mind is to be respected, little do we really know the river "Ego" deep and wide.
This isn't even the whole story, I've had some VERY strange things happen to me when just practicing invocations and what not I even made a friends dog piss itself by just clinching my fist in front of it

if you want to use magick or evocation to win the lottery, you're much better off divining for the numbers and then going and getting a ticket. Trying to force the numbers to change in your favor is essentially working against the powerful collective will of everyone who bought a ticket. I guess perhaps it could work that way if you summon a demon or a spirit for every person that bought a ticket. (millions of people) but nah, I think you should do whatever you would do to divine for the numbers
