  • I tried this and it didnt work at all!

  • Also try using the strike part on a matchbox, it works great to keep the blades sharp, but still trying to figure out how to extend the lubricant strip, in my opinion the strip matters.

  • Totally works, but I wouldn't carry away too much with the "months" estimations that people gives

  • @ageslave lol I'm native American but my facial hair is weird in the sense that I get small patches of where beard wants to grow and it looks dumb retarted so I just shave 1 every 2 weeks lol

  • im asian so i only have to shave like once a month lol

with this method i can prolly keep a razor for a year lol

  • @ageslave - I bet you can go 15 years or more on one blade at once/mo!

    I get 6 mos easy once/day - that's about 180 times... that's 180 mos = 15 years!

  • You kids should get into wet shaving. Real money saver when you're paying ten cents per shave, if that.

  • wait...so its a bad thing when the blades get rusty and dull??? SHIT!

  • How do you get rid of the gunk in between the blades though? (the hair etc.)

    That's my biggest problem always.

  • @LarryBundyJr I use a squirt bottle that has a stream setting, I use a solution of 90% water 10% simple green all purpose cleaner, also I make sure to only buy razors with an open back, so it wont pack in between the blades.

  • does this spoil the jeans?

  • Thank you for the information. Anything that could help people not to be scammed in buying overprice razor blades at retail stores is a good idea. Even with your tip razor blades still need to be changed after a while! One good place online where you can found good quality blades at affordable price is ZiloStore.

  • Awesome! Now I can double the life of my blades. Just watch, they will try to come out with some kind of blade design that prevents people from being able to do this... corporate greed :(

  • yeah same thing going both ways

  • That does not sharpen the razor it cleans it and hones it.

  • This totally works!!

  • Going up the pants, and down the pants the way you are doing it, is the exact same thing.

  • also I would spray it with rubbing alchohol to keep bacteria away. Never store the razor in a cup of oil gram negative bacteria grow this way but you can wipe it with oil to keep the conditioning strip working longer. Its always good to keep a little bottle of rubbing alchohole in a spray bottle it has so many wonderful uses especially in the bathroom. just look it up ( rubbing alchohol uses)

  • Stay away from the Gillette maffia and learn how to shave with a good old safetyrazor. It will safe you a lot of money!!

  • Nice tip. You kan also keep your razor in a cup of olive oil to extend the life of the razorblade! I use a safetyrazor en keep my blade also in a cup of olive oil. It stay's sharp for a long time!

  • The Gillette mafia will put a horses head in your bed.

  • I'm just glad you got adsense money for saving me money. Cheers to you!

  • COOL THNKS TOYOU

  • 8 people work for disposable razor companies

  • do they have to be blue jeans can any other colour jeans work as well

  • @lokalllize gotta be denim.

  • i use a lether bocket its very good but i buy a belt or somethink but thanx for this amazing tip

  • Does it have to be blue jeans???

  • Hank Green sent me. You have changed my life for the better forever. Thank you, and DFTBA!

  • Does this ruin your jeans? O.O

  • @Gondorian9 Well, as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't... Actually, I always have couple of clean ones in the closet (I mean, Jeans), and, as far as I can tell you, the thing that more ruin 'em are stuff like cigarette packs, and lighters, or keys, that I carry in the pockets when wearing 'em... the traces of stuff like that are more evident on jeans, then backwards stroking of disposable razor cartridges, that is actually a sort of ironing effect...

  • @Gondorian9 an important detail is to push your razor in *the opposite* direction you would on your face. When Mr. Robinson says to move it both ways, he is still pushing the razor up, not pulling it down and shaving his jeans.

  • Using this method for more then 6 monts now (shaving beard and head 3 x a week), and it really does work perfectly. I'm very grateful to you for this video. But, while I do agree that lubricating strip is, actually, of no importance, I must say that microfins strip, that's below the blades (i.e. like in Mach 3 cartridge) has its purpose, at least to keep proper angle of blades during shave, which changes when such strip's worn out - a process that honing speeds up. Any comments on this?

  • Vlogbrothers anyone?

  • @101TheShaggy NERDFIGHTERS!

  • @Kaythanksbye DFTBA!

  • we wana see your face!

  • @chronic0149 hmmmm, i'll have to think abou tthat! i have a face for radio ;>)

  • I think that the stupidest gimmick the shaving industry ever came up with was the idea that a vibrating razor gives a better shave. giving them excuse to make the blades cost more. that's why I went back to disposables. they work just as good and cost alot less.

  • @roybotnik cog in some evil corporate machine....lol

  • woot hanging blue jeans in my restroom thank you

  • Gillette is like FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • im definitly using this technique i have a proglide fusion and im not tryin to spend 17bucks for razors hell no lets see how this works....

  • Wait...u HANG your pants O_o ??? How big is your closet?

  • I get the idea for this video - is to sharpen the blades. But when its come to using that blade which was just stocked on a jean which has not been washed for quite sometime.I dont think its a good idea. I have a senstitive skin and i wouldnt want my jean dirt to stick to my blades (even though you wash the blades still) and use it on my face....I cant think of doing it.

  • @uzayrathlete Bahahahahah - ok, i can maaaaybe see your point if you are OCD or something... if you put a clean pair a jeans on a hanger and you wash your razor which has just been on your face... how 'dirty' can a pair of clean jeans be? or if you're that sensitive - wash your jeans... really, you face is safe!

  • or we can all use safety razors and get double edge blades that cost around $.09 cents and shave, wet shaving is an art,it takes patience but the rewards are too many to make an speech here, give it a try folks,am sure if you all do it and persevere you will be rewarded,I did.enjoy your shaves with the 5 blade behemoth and goop in a can lol.

  • I suppose am not going to ever wear the jeans that am going to use for the sharpening?

  • @jaketrobinson How often do you sharpen the blade? Once a week? Once every 6 months? I would like to try this method, I use a double or triple bladed razor and would like to keep each at least 6 months or longer.

  • Afilar las hojillas, las Gillette Mach 3 estan MUY CARAS!

  • buy 99Ct store razors

    12 @ 99ct

    then do this!!

    poor working class rule!

  • There is another method that definitely works. Just keep the blades lubricated. That will prevent rust and corrosion. A drop of 3-in-One machine oil will do the trick. Whiskers are no match for steel, but rust is.

  • Does an actual razor strop work - the leather and canvas ones?

I've got a small bunch of 100yo straight razors, but somehow never thought to use the strop for my god-forsaken MACH3 or Fusion...

Either way, you've just saved me a whole buncha money. Thanks.

  • i simply learned to shave with shitty blades. always dry them carefully and everything, never have any huge problems except a little more pull, but its still a close shave

  • as a bearded man, i resent this video

  • I have found that rinsing the razor in warm, not hot water can extend the life. Going to try this trick though. Thanks!!!

  • About a week?! I use those blades for at least 8 weeks before I change them...

  • @porterism100 <-- has baby facial hair

  • @Pewiie123 Honestly, I don't, but then I only shave 2x a week, so if you work it out it's approx. 16 shaves

  • @porterism100 then you, my friend, are set for life!

  • Saw this video on the Lew Rockwell website. I'll definitely try it out.

  • Um, stropping, yeah, been around for what 100 years?

I love all the clueless comments and claims it bs...this shit is obvious, but of course...Ignorance is louder than logic online.

  • IMHO those razors are a total waste of money. I use a double edge safety razor which is a lot cheap and seems to shave better. Good tip nonetheless.

  • I'M NOT BROKE ANYMORE

  • He's just pushing forward both times, right? He's never actually, "Shaving" the jeans?

  • @Xillaw correct... I only go both directions because of the diagonal pattern of the threads I just believe it can't hurt to 'evenly' strop the blade...

  • Razor blade companies HATE you!

  • @caseytheloring yeah, and what's ironic is I just got a $160 check for adsense advertising... and Gillette is the biggest advertiser! So, in this case The Man is getting busted twice...

  • sweet thanks.

  • Now Gillette is going to find some way to design their razor cartridges to prevent people from doing this.

  • As a former cook, I know that blades tend to 'fold' before they go dull. Straightening the blade (with a pair of jeans in this case) just uncurls the delicate sharp edge. This wor

    ks!

  • i learned how to do this in county jail many many many many years ago.... lol... i didn't know people yearned for such common knowledge... time for some prison tutorials lol

  • this is the concept of a "strop", traditionally a piece of smooth leather.

  • As a former cook, I know that blades tend to 'fold' before they go dull. Straightening the blade (with a pair of jeans in this case) just uncurls the delicate sharp edge. This works!

  • A friend of mine tried and did it the wrong way.. he now has a giant hole in his jeans. Lolololol

  • @RhinoSanderson This was uploaded on the 20th of August, 2009.

  • Do you know if a honing stone would work?

  • @Zolio6 i kinda doubt it... the blades plastic body tends to sheild the blade from a hard surface... the fact the jeans are soft and pliable allows it to make contact... but give it a try and report back... i could be wrong...

  • Possibly the best 30 seconds I've spent on youtube. Thanks!

  • the reason this works is because it isnt actually sharpening the blades, but rather honing the edge.

the edge on a razor is so fine that it bends easily after use, so it isnt dull, it is misshapen. this is the same concept that is used with a honing steel for kitchen knives...and why they used leather straps on old-school straight edge razors.

if it were being sharpened, then part of the original blade would have to be removed by some sort of grinding.

  • @furbyoats yeah, you are correct... "sharpening" is just a common term most folks are familiar with...

  • @RhinoSanderson i loled sooo hard

  • Wow, I never would have though of that... im totally trying this! thanks for the vid!

  • @OneManShowShow listening comprehension ftw

  • @ThePandaMovement Explanation? I am not going to rewatch the crap vid that I disliked in the first place. especially because I use electric razor.

  • My last name is FORBES.

  • This works, I LOVE YOU

  • it cant be that easy,

  • @Nckdaman well, if you really have a hard time with this method come on back and we can give you council...

  • Essentially you're "stropping" the blade. I use a canvas finish on my straight razor in a very similar fashion, after I am done honing it on leather.

  • just tried this on a pretty old razor. It works!!!!

  • I'll have to see how long I can use the same razor

  • "the threads of the jeans run in a diagonal so switching directions allows for an balanced approach to fine tuning the blade's edge" this is actually inaccurate - to properly "balance" the diagonal you should do up-to-down then left-to-right - a mere 180° flip doesn't change the interaction with the diagonal (a 90° rotation will though)

  • now every one has a use for those old jeans with holes in them. instead of just tossing them in the trash.

  • I just bought a crazy expensive gillette today and i've already been looking for ways to keep the blades as sharp as possible.

one thing i read suggested using some minneral oil on the blades to keep water/air off the blades. It'll also help smooth your shave like the aloe strip would since minneral oil is a natural lubricant.

  • Great video! I blogged about it and another method since I get these pricey razors for FREE all the time! Thanks!

  • At the time of WW2 when all those Razor Blades was made from hardened steel and they did have that bluish color. Or was it in WW1. In our day's they are soft and they wear out easily. Don't throwe those razor's away. Use this method.. Thanks for this video.

  • Mama used to sharpen her scissors by cutting dads sandpaper with them. They stayed happily married inspite.

  • tomorrow I am gonna try this!

  • One of the most useful tips ever :)

  • This totally works but I wondered why so I pulled out my 10x eye loop ( for examining gem stones) and examined 4 used blades over 1 year old before and after sharpening them. You can see that the leading edge of each blade is shinier after sharpening. The edge is maybe 1/128 of an inch but it is definitely sharper.

  • @CaptSteveCPA Wow- thanks for the 'hard evidence' as some has speculated the only benefit was 'drying' the blade - but I had always believed it actually sharpened it... thanks for your imput

  • @jaketrobinson I think the actual term is "Strooping". You also can use leather to stroop as well.

  • A dull blade has never been my problem it is was always the lubricating strip drying out of eventually tearing apart......guess denim cant save my blade :(

  • The reason this is working is because when a blade gets dull it is because the edge is so thin it bends (actually rolls) at the point of contact. He is merely unrolling the bent edge, and not to a very straight edge.

I didn't read all the comments so please pardon any redundancy. I use a double edge safety razor and blades for the whole year cost me maybe $25 (i could find cheaper blades).

  • It is keeping it dry that keeps it shap I use a towl and just dab it on the towel right after I use it and they last for months. I heard that trick on clark howard and it really works

  • ca marche....

  • Would you say with 100% certainty that 'stropping the blade' does not have any positive impact? I do agree that drying has a positive effect but I will not go so far as saying the drying is the ONLY reason... cheers,

  • @jaketrobinson Well, first off your not "stropping" the blades. your using denim and a poor quality denim at that. If you want to sharpen the blade you need to use a leather strop, and you need to be able to sharpen both sides of the blade. All your doing is drying the blade thus extending the life.

If you REALLY want to save money on razors. Learn how to use a straight edge or double edge razor. Double edge blades under $2.00 for a pack of 10.

  • @headmouse Well, first off it's "you're" not "your," and second off, learn to spell before correcting another person's spelling mistake.

  • @homertone for some reason it wont let me post a url, but do a search for Muphry's Law.

    this.

  • @homertone First off no one was correcting anyone spelling mistakes. In fact I spelled it the same way he did. Second learn to read and comprehend someone's comment before you reply. Nice try though. :)

I was saying that unless he is using leather then he is not stropping.

  • @homertone you should be a teacher...

  • @subtenk0 thanks for that!

  • @jaketrobinson lol 2 months later..your late! haha

  • @stupidjunk978 As I hope you know, there is a difference between sharpening and honing. I suppose you are familiar with a honing steel, which, when used properly, keeps your kitchen knife blade edges true. It is not a sharpener however as sharpening requires grinding metal and using special stones and technique to put a new edge on a knife. Honing straightens out the edge of the blade which acquires tiny irregularities, dents and bent places from use.

  • @stupidjunk978 Why the downvotes on his comment? He was right. How does it even make sense for a blade to be sharpened when it's used more?

  • @phazenator why do barbers strop their straight razors? I shave with a straight razor and I strop it before every time I use it and it's not to dry it. I'm trying to keep it sharp.

  • @jillybooty Razor strops provide a flat, smooth, continuous surface to shape the blade. The jeans provide an uneven rough surface, so it's hard to imagine they would be able to efectively serve to sharpen the blade. To be honest, though, I knew far less about the strops when I posted my original comment.

  • @phazenator My strop comes with one leather strop and one linen strop. The linen is rougher, so its mainly used to touch up the blade when it starts to tug. I've never stropped on denim but I imagine it would at least work in a pinch.

  • @phazenator yeah, but jeans are soft compared to the blade... and if you look close your will see 'lines' of threads that each are putting light pressure on the blade... but hard to argue with results...

  • Okay, personally I use a double edge razor and blades are like .10 cents a piece. Anyway, this video is hilarious. I'm not gonna pick on it because I've haven't tried this yet, but I gotta' give the guy props for resourceful thinking.

  • I've been using the same blade since June but unfortunately had to change four days ago because the connection(which connects to the shaft) broke. Otherwise this method is great.

  • @jin37uk hey thanks for the feedback - glad it has benefitted you!

  • this actually works, my blade is still very sharp 1 month later - brilliant video!

  • Or you could just never shave and grow a long beard... saves the most money and time...

  • @SuperNonothing Usually you still gotta sharpen those things.

  • Good question... i do it both before and after...I lather up.. then I give it 20 strokes in both directions (this gives time for lather to soften beard) shave, then give it 10 strokes both ways and then put razor up... just my habit...

  • How often do you do this? Do you do it when you're done shaving or just before?

  • weird, maybe you have discovered you can do it both ways.. never even considered it..have to investigate...

  • careful with the both ways! :P

  • and here i am again :) this will sound weird, cause it turned out that all this time i 've been sharpening the blade in the wrong way! i was actually shaving my trouseres and then i was pushing the blade away. nevertheless, it also works this way :)

  • Yes, this is a cross-gender equal opportunity money saving idea!

the angle will not be so crucial - you want to turn handle up enough that the 'back' of the blade makes as much contact on the denim as possible... you will be 'pushing' away from the cutting edge.. this idea should work on almost any disposable blades.. please tell your girlfriends! (and all others!)

  • What angle should the blades be held in relationship to the jeans? (Yes, I'm female, in case anyone wonders. Women should know about this too. It should work on our razors)

  • Wow, i am really flattered... thanks so much for coming back to make the comment! Please send the link to this video to your friends! cheers,

  • i had to come back again and say that this is probably the most useful thing i ever found on the internet :) and it's gonna save me a lot of money. i haven't changed the blade since i left my previous comment and that's saying something, cause i have to shave like every 2 days and after about 8 shaves the blade's usually dead, but not this time, still sharp and smooth!

  • this is a cool idea. but to late for me ive given up on modern Gillette i now use either a straight razor or a 1930 Gillette double edge razor

  • Dang, someone gotta ManCrush on me!

yeah, check it out and you're gonna love me for life, bro...

your blade will be sayin "Don't Change Me Bro!"

  • I also have a gillete fusion. The head blades are a bitch to replace at almost 4 dollars per head blade where I live. Does this technique really work? If it does, I love you for life man.

  • demim is denim, so any color will do... cheers,

  • sorry if this sounds stupid but do the jeans have to be blue or can they be any color? thanks

  • dude, that's an awesome comment... LMAO..thanks,

  • I'm a lumberjack and I've been using blue jeans to keep my axe and chainsaw sharpened for years but I never thought of using it on my razor. But then again I don't shave because I'm a lumberjack.

  • @MOV13M4ST3R were you a lumberjack just like your dear old dad. wearing high heals and hose.

  • @MOV13M4ST3R

best comment ever, begun and ended with "I'm a lumberjack"

  • @MOV13M4ST3R Lumberjacks don't shave for a reason. Most of the lumberjacks I have met are made from such tough stuff that shaving once with a blade is enough to dull it to uselessness. Electric razors, straight razors, safety razors, three bladed razors, it doesn't matter. One shave and the blades are done for. It's simply more cost effective to grow a beard than to keep buying 365 blades a year.

  • @tf2whackyengineer But you still can shave with an axe, shovel, practically anything that have a sharp edge!

  • @MOV13M4ST3R I think you should be a comedian AND a lumberjack.

  • @MOV13M4ST3R

I have been on youtube for about six hours straight....best comment I have read so far! Not to mention you wrote this a year ago.

  • @MOV13M4ST3R lol

  • @MOV13M4ST3R

Do you like to wear woman's clothing?

  • @MOV13M4ST3R and that's okay

  • @MOV13M4ST3R wow 1000 people like your comment

  • @MOV13M4ST3R You, sir, win the internet.

  • @MOV13M4ST3R you know you have the highest thumbs up in youtube history right?

  • @MOV13M4ST3R you have the highest rated fucking comment on the youtube history !!!!

  • Can I do this while wearing my jeans? I think you could sharpen your hedge clippers with a pair of corduroy pants couldn't you?

  • yeah, you could sharpen while wearing your jeans... but you hedge clippers - good thing i know you and i know you're pulling my leg ;>)

  • is this working?

  • What'e the point of switching directions? The blades are still being brushed from the top to the bottom no matter which way you go.

  • if you look closely at a pair of jeans you will see the weave pattern runs in a diagonal direction... to get a balanced contact to the blade it doesn't hurt to go in the opposite direction.. hope this was helpful - good question...

  • bravo dude, bravo :), i hate buying new heads

  • Thank for the nice comment - cheers

  • Everybody hates buying new heads.

  • i use phenom power, works perfectly! :)

  • Comment removed

  • Doesn't work for me :( In fact it was even worse. I've used wilkinson sword with two blades.

  • Can you explain why it is not working for you? you are the first person who has had any issue with this... it's simple and shouldn't harm your blade at all

btw, i use a FOUR blade and it works great...

are you sure you are doing it right? Make sure you are stropping away from the blade edge...

  • I'm sure I'm doing it right :)

Maybe I have to try something other than wilkinson or it was too old.

  • yeah, maybe it was too old... blades rust very fast - you can't really tell with the naked eye but the first time you use it and it gets water on it the edge of the blade will look like a rollacoster under a microscope... so you need to do this from the very first use... try a differnt brand...cheers,

  • I think that it works only if you do it with a new head right from the beginning. kleku says his head was old. Thank for the tip-off.
