  • Actually, these micrometers can't be zero'd. They come with the spanner so you can reference how far they are off. I've disassembled and reassembled them, and there's no adjustment on harbor freight micrometers to line up the zero mark. I tried. You just reference how far it's off against the spanners and add it to your measurements. According to what I googled and read, that's actually a standard practice.

  • umm, why are you writing how much off the micrometer is?

there's a spanner wrench included to zero out the micrometer if it's off

  • hi, i think the wear is 14 10,000 of an inch not 14 000 of an inch.. please advise it is (3.3474 - 3.3460) gets .0014 . you can see this at 9.58 run tim of ur show. I may be wrong, pls comment. Second to go with digital guage, i assume you just change Dial guage with Digital guage and use same adapter, avnils etc. is that right.

  • @sivucit Yeah, but it's written on the white board correctly. :) I'm thinking, talking un-scripted, writing, working with both hands and a white board while operating a camera and concentrating on staying in the shot. I think I can be forgiven this time. :P

Yes, you can change it out to a digital indicator. The one I have is a .0005, not a .00005 like this dial-type. I use it like that on Blueprint 106 because it's easier to read (and shoot), and bores don't require .00005" accuracy.

  • @sivucit good catch! See other reply. I know YouTube only notifies you on one reply even when you get two.

  • bought all the tools at harbor freight eh??

  • @MrTurbo4G63T Not the bore gauge, but otherwise, YEAH! I'm still hunting for used Mitutoyo .0001" outside micrometers in 1-2", 2-3" and 3-4". Like the bore gauge, I can't justify the expense of buying them new with how little they would get used.

  • You use the telescoping bore gauge, measure it with the micrometer then zero the dial bore gauge in the micrometer and use it for reference to see what the size of the bore is.

  • When you going to do a video on the tear down on your motor.

  • @adamryanclark Actually, my computer is on the workbench 4 hours away from finding out whether or not I need to put it back together and shoot it all again. I'm showcasing the "new" 6-bolt first so I don't have to explain the process while tearing the 7-bolt down.

Geek version: I learned that when you delete a symbolic link from a disk via. command line, it wipes out the reference but leaves the symbolic link in place.

Laymans' version: I deleted it. Hopefully the utility I'm using works.

  • @adamryanclark failed. I think I'm more distraught over losing the videos than I was when I broke the GSX. Silly, I know... but breaking the GSX just took 12 seconds, and losing the videos cost me almost 30 hours of work. More than anything I know they were awesome, and I really wanted to share them with you guys. I hope I can recreate them at least half as good as they were.

Time to put it all back together, and shoot it again.

  • Thimble... I love that. Is that a technical term or are my machinist friends going to bust my chops for talkin' like a Brit? :D I suppose I have the google?

If you watch it in HD, you can see them. Hopefully YouTube's video compressor didn't wipe 'em out. This camera does a great job, but its close-up ability is very lacking. Better suited for sports photography than anything but I'm not complaining!

  • Wow, this was brilliant, just like I was back at college learning my Toolmaking trade. I was always going to make a video like this once upon a time, but never did, I still have all my Mics. One snag, I needed to see the thimble up close to see the graduations on the Mic, I couldn't see them, which means if I was a complete beginner I would struggle a little. Its only my opinion. I love this topic, I could go on... ha ha Great video, 5*

  • I just learned a lot! Thank you!

  • Jafro its me again. The guy from the clutch adjustment video. Just want to thank you for this one! Could not have come at a better time. My car overheated the other day and boom goes the head gasket. Spark plug wires are melted into the head. So I am assuming the head is gone. I'm going to be ripping it apart soon and checking it out. Just haven't had the time. Cant wait for the next videos!

  • @bpk1337 Glad to hear you're taking this one on yourself! Fortunately you can use any 1.6L or 2.0L DOHC head from any Hyundai or Mitsubishi with a 4g63 or G4CS engine. Just swap the cams. The turbo/non-turbo heads are the same. If it's a 2g, don't bother cutting corners, get another 2g head. If you have to spend money fixing a 7-bolt block, you'll really enjoy what is soon to come.

  • jafromobile engine building 101. Great stuff.

  • This looks like the start of an engine building series.. go jafro.. looking forward to it!

  • Good stuff!

  • I have the same exact micrometer set, but I've never figured out what that double sided hook is for? it's the weird piece by the 1" and 2" reference rods.

    Thanks

  • @aleks138 If you look at the base of the micrometer, that little ratchety-thing... there's 2 holes in it just below the handle. It's a spanner wrench that fits that hole so you can tighten/loosen it. If it works, it's pointless really to remove it as far as I can tell... but if it keeps coming loose then you can honk it back down with that wrench.

  • you got wyotech,UTI and the school of Jafro.....FTW!! :)

  • @gdizzle530 You noticed! Bless my sponsors! I'm grateful and very flattered to have them on my page!

  • great stuff in here.i have learned so much from watching your videos.... thanks.

  • High quality video, Jafro

  • I tried to find a digital gauge when I was doing my build and it would have been invaluable, but I had to purchase the Micrometers, Board gauge, and digital calipers all at the same time. Great explanation on how to zero the gauges. It took me hours of searching and reading to figure out what you taught in 10 min.

FWIW there is an event (Import shootout) at Virginia Motorsports Park this weekend. Come by if you are around. I will be trying to scratch my way to the winners circle.

  • It's a shame to zero your most accurate tool to your calipers. Would be nice to have a set of 3-4 mics, but you could measure out the attachments with your mics and add them up. Though that gets messy.

  • @DrJerryrigger I see you seeing me feeling this.

Measuring them separately is pointless, in addition to messy... because the gauge has a floating zero based on how deep into the handle it's clamped. Even if I had a 3-4" Mic, it would still be graduated in .001" :\

Fortunately because most of these measurements are relative, I can still calibrate one-off-the-other for cams & cranks and still nail my oil clearances with it to the .0001".

  • @DrJerryrigger Just re-read what I typed. Worst post I've ever made.

The dial gauge zeros differently based on how deep it's clamped... I think you followed me.

The 3-4" Mic would be AWESOME, but I can't afford one more accurate than .001, so I still have the calibration dilemma even with the 3-4" Mic.

I felt like an idiot taking the measurement with the calipers. I don't know how well that conveys in the video, but truly a sad embarassment.

  • @Jafromobile You can get some cheap used mics at flea markets or ebay. Just get a good brand (I like Starrett), and you should be able to measure to +/- one tenth (that's 0.0001) with out any problem.

I guess you could zero it with your mic's and a short probe and just switch in a longer one. Still not ideal, but maybe a little better.

  • I had a quiz today on micrometers in auto! Weird coincidence, we measured brake rotors, a cylinder on a Honda block, and tons of other random stuff! Well explained and as always great vid!

  • @iexploderacoons thank YOU. I've had no formal training with any of them. :D

...but the informal training... it was GREAT!

  • @Jafromobile I find that I learn faster and better methods and techniques when I experiment and learn on my own. Auto isn't fun for me anymore because just a few people in there work including myself.

  • Oh damn. I see big things coming. It's a huge commitment. I wish you luck, I just started a video of installing a Saturn 105 amp Alternator in a DSM. I got about to the point where I was shaving little by little to get it to sit flat on the bracket and I stopped recording. Though I have most of the footage complete. I gave up as the car is a DD and needed to be finished. It takes a lot of effort to make these videos. Thanks for your DSM contributions.

  • @theboxmodder I was intending to make that exact video. One of my friends just did it, and I love the idea of replacing the Mitsu alternator with a high-output GM unit. So would anyone else who's replaced as many of them as I have. Always 1 day out of warranty, too.

  • @Jafromobile Indeed. Even for a refurb autozone alternator. Lifetime warranty you can't beat. The gentleman told me that as long as I kept the alt in good shape after "Machining" it to fit. He could pass it off as a normal one and do a free replacement. Can't beat that.

  • Temperature.

All tools and parts must be at the same temperature around 20°C.

they are at the factory and they should in your shop.

otherwise you will never have a consistent and accurate measurment.

important to remember when you work in a garage or if your parts are stored outside......

  • @michaelovitch You are 1000% correct. I actually intended to include that. Really I did. Sometimes when the camera starts rolling those thoughts don't turn into action? After all, I do have a thermal expansion video up here already. I know better. I left the last sentence in the description for brilliant subscribers such as yourself to correct me when I get spread too thin.

ALSO: Never set your parts on a concrete floor. It's always colder than the room.

  • @Jafromobile

    Thanks but i'm not brilliant.

i'm just a random dumbass who try to go a bit further.

i've visited a machining shop and talked a bit with the cool owner

temperature is an important part but often forgotten that' why i made a comment on it (and the winter is coming so...)

Happy to know that you have a thermal expansion vid it's very interesting yet.

the problem is you don't know as a viewer what it's prepared or what vid will follow.

  • Jesus , its about time, i was wondering if you were still alive! Good video man, look forward to seeing more from you, and id love to see that colt running! I have a question for you, any idea how to get the diagnostic codes out of a 2003 carisma, it should have a 16 pin eodb plug but i cant find it, its a 1.3 petrol engine, 5speed manual, maybe you can shed some light, i would really appreciate it!

  • @TrueBlueEG8 I'm actually re-making the videos I had already made. I lost 3.5 hours of footage clearing space for an export. I also lost my fileserver which has all my original projects on it. It's been a tough month for me technology-wise. Sorry 'bout the wait.

  • @Jafromobile Aw, you made me feel bad then, i was just kidding with you! Sorry about your technological problems, your poor eclipse included, hope shit starts to look up for you soon!

  • @TrueBlueEG8 meh... it's all good. It's not the first time I've lost all of my most valuable data. The sun still rises and sets.

Now all my video projects are with my 9,000 pictures of my GSX builds through the years, up in data heaven. I'm glad they finally got a chance to meet each other. But the stuff I'm recreating now?... That's because I threw it out like an idiot last night. You'd be watching it right now if I didn't.

  • nice :D

  • Dude, No Homo but i love you! These videos that you're about to make are going to be so educational for me and the rest of the world ! Great Job!

  • that was a nice video. need more of these
