Severe dislike. When will white musicians stop taking over every bit of black culture and getting more credit for it than blacks do? I really enjoy Ben Folds's music, but not this shit. It's not irony, it's not satire, it's just a cover. People don't even bother to learn what actual irony and actual satire are any longer. Not to mention allegory and conceit. These things use to be literary concepts with important meaning.
And you don't understand how that makes it more insulting? I'm not black. I'm not affected. I just consider it a really lame act on Ben's part. Make your own music. Don't mock or steal culture from black people. Their music has been stolen and used by whites to become wealthy for more than a century now, and *white people* don't even get it. Like you.
@Username93611 I do get it bruv. I just don't consider it stealing. This is the 21st century and if you are still categorising music as white and black then you have the problem. Not Ben Folds.
@Username93611 Maybe he wasn't covering it to be ironic and hilarious? Maybe he just thought it would be a fun thing to do? You should probably talk to Ben, man.
@LeshaAnn There's no conspiracy here, the Dr. Dre version has about 7 times as many views. Because of that and the fact that age restriction is from user-reports it would lead to the conclusion that the reason is simply because it hasn't been 'reported' enough.
@LeshaAnn Because when black kids hear these songs, they run around shooting people and impregnating other black kids. When they hear the Ben Folds version they just chill out, play dominoes, and drink malt liquor. lolz
I wonder if it's actually serious. I mean, he has some really good sounds. Maybe it's to put emphasis on the lyrics with Dr.Dre has produced, which are extremely misogynist? What do you folks think?
@doctorbadwolfrose - Well, I think on a political basis, yeah. He has some pretty politically-aimmed songs. So, using that history, I would guess that it's political satire. However, I'm not sure. Would be cool if he answered this so I could know!! lol
If I were Dr. Dre, I'd be amused as hell by this production. If he didn't take it in stride and see it as a compliment, then he's much less cool a guy than I took him for. Peace.
A bunch of people at my school have just discovered the original version of this song, so now I'm debating whether or not to troll them and tell them that this is the original version
@colorgaurdjunkie Ummmm... This a cover of Dr. Dre's song Bitches Aint Shit feat. Snoop Dogg on The Chronic. So, technically, it's not original, but it's still good.
@TASTYNUGGETSS Easy there, buddy. Maybe some of us don't like this song because Ben Folds, with all his smug irony, completely obliterates the meaning of the original. Dre tells us how awful it is in the hood; Ben Folds mocks him.
Dre's version says: "being black and poor in America is awful; drugs, crime, misogyny, powerlessness, it's inescapable"
This version says: "ha ha, listen to these lyrics, aren't these "gangstas" so funny and ridiculous? enjoy my lovely piano arrangement and laugh."
@esiotrot17 You are reading WAY too far into Dre's version. Except for the misogyny... that part is there. Although, the song is pretty much celebrating it, so in that way you're wrong again.
@thepiperad I'm reading "WAY too far" into it? It's a song. With words. You're supposed to read into them. Fuck you if you think Dre's version doesn't deserve 400 characters on a YouTube video comment.
With respect to the misogyny, you know this song is actually about a guy, right? Eric Wright (also known as Eazy E) and Jerry Heller completely screwed over everyone in N.W.A., and Dre uses the "bitch" trope to make a comment on where loyalty and respect fit into his world
Have you ever needed to express your anger? Have you ever been the victim of institutional racism? Me neither, but I bet it makes you wanna swear like crazy.
@bwood21390 what about country music they definitely do not have the most insightful lyircs all the time "She thinks my tractor’s sexy, it really turns her on, She’s always tearing at me, while I’m chuggin’ along" and i can give you more if you want, does tht make country not real music since theyre are some artist wh make songs with stupid lyrics because for every rap song you give me with bad lyrics i can give you one with amazing lyrics or i can match you with a country or rock song tht suks
@Hippiegeekful I get frustrated when people call other music types "illegitimate" or allude to them being a lesser form of music than others. I personally am not a fan of rap. That does not mean that it's less legitimate music than, say, jazz.
@DasBlitzKrieg1337 Firstly, you're thinking of bebop. Secondly, I was just pulling a genre out of my ass. I never claimed jazz to be the ultimate form of music. In fact, I'm pretty sure I claimed it to be equal with every other genre of music. From country to trip-hop to reggae. Now, I hate country in all of its incarnations, but that doesn't make it any less of music than anything else.
@1138IJ77GGDOS5 your a racist...your trying to use a straw man to give some sense of validation for you lack of sensitivity...racism on a base emotional scale is just another way of using words to intentionally hurt someone....if i called your mother a cunt...am i Not being an asshole...i rest my case
