Hey man, I dont know if you remember me, but I contacted you a while ago asking about what you used with the loop pedal as 'Joeltgrainger'. Anyway, I've just uploaded my first video of the loop stuff I do at the moment. Just click on my channel, and let me know what you think! Thanks, Joel
Hello, I really love your arrangement! That's the best Cooley's reel I've ever heard :). Do you have a mp3 version of that with a better sound quality you could send me?
HI, I love the way you put a modern twist on traditional tunes. I have been playing the fiddle for a couple of years, and I am gradually learing more irish tunes. chaisegilbert, I am having lessons from a classical violin teacher, and it helps no end with my technique, particularly the use of the bow, which can then be adapted to any type of music., Find a good violin teacher and you wil progress much quicker.
Awsome! :) i play mandolin and guitar. Ive tried to learn Violin and i want to play so bad but I just cant get 'using the bow' down. Any tips for me? Id greatly apprectiate it :) Thanks!
That is amazing, I've never seen this pedal used on anything other than a guitar. Great use of it, great job. Crap this just made my day. Thank you good sir!
Hi, thanks for the compliment! When I made this video I was using a Line 6 DL4 for the loops. After that I move on to a Line 6 M13, and just this week started using a Roland AC 33.
Hi there, the fiddle was made by EVL (Electric Violin Lutherie) and it cost me about 1,200 at the time. It might be less, because at the time mine was quite custom. Their line has expanded a lot since then!
Awesome fiddling! Normally I'm very proud of my piano skills, but when I see your talent, it makes me feel small. Violin is the queen of instruments for sure.
I just started playing the violin in April of '09, and am playing songs I love already. I'm not ready for public yet, but I am enjoying what I am doing. I'm also teaching myself the Soprano Sax, another instument noone seems to think you can learn on your own. With the violin I got interested when I took my youngest daughter to a youth orchestra class. She used a rental, and ya, I learned the basics just watching her class. I bought a cheap violin on ebay, and went to town. Varian, SO HOT!
I love Irish music and want to play the violin, but I read that its probably one of the hardest insturments to teach yourself, and that its not advised. :( I tought myself the tin whistle, Irish flute, and have played guitar half my life (nine years)...is it possible to "pick up" the violin? Amazingly awesome playing!
Yes, it is one of the hardest instruments to learn, especially teach yourself. It's an instrument that, at least, requires guidance to learn the basic maneuvers and technique. I think that it might be possible to teach ones self to play the violin, but I think it'd be a long and hard road. The tin whistle, flute and guitar are instruments of a completely different type. They'll help in learning the violin, but no much imho.
I'm glad to hear that you like the music! Thanks for the compliments!
@Varian128 I have a friend who taught herself the violin and she is actually one of the best fiddle players I have heard. Her name is Hannah and she is in a band called the Dyer Cummings. Youtube them, they do some great folk stuff!
@FrantikFilms The violin involves using the bow, which is a very techical thing to do... as far as the teaching yourself to finger music and songs, you can, but learning the stuff with the bow is very difficult to teach yourself... and I am talking from experience
Hey Varian, you inspire me to learn to play the violin. Ik have on old one from my grandma. I made it playable again. do you have this version of cooleys reel on tablature so i have some stuff to work on? and is your cd out yet?
I'm glad to hear that we have another violinist in he making!!!
I actually don't have any tablature for you to look at, but I'm quite sure that you could do a google image search of "Cooley's Reel" or "Coolie's Reel" and you'd find something.
As far as the CD, I'm working on releasing one of the songs for a full listen, and I'm making final cuts for all the songs. I still don't have artwork, so maybe I'll pull something together for myself. We'll see, but I'll keep you posted!!!
It's called a "looper" or "phrase looper". You hit a button, and it records what you play, then hit another button and it will 'loop' what you just played. Then you can overdub, stop, start, slow it to half speed or play the loop in reverse. It's a handy tool! I'm glad you liked it!
sweet..... that is awesome! In garage band right? Ah.. I don't know how to use it :( I have a mac and garage band but all i know how to do is click record and sing or play and click stop lol :(
Whenever your cd is finished I'd like to buy a copy. I've seen this video a lot of times and yet I still get impressed everytime. Keep on playing - I love it!
Thanks! Yeah, the sound quality isn't good. I have a CD in the works, it's pretty much completely recorded, but I'm waiting for my brother to finish the album artwork. It'll be available soon, when it is, I'll send out a message and maybe make a video with directions on how to get it. Things will be all worked out soon, I hope.
Plus, this song is on the CD, and it's a good recording... better audio.
This song is in every sense traditional. Think about it, what made the Celts so unique was the different way they did everything. This man simply expressed his own feelings in the songs. How is that not traditional to the culture?

All I can say is you murdered two trad Irish tunes. Why not learn to play them properly first, play each note and sound it out, not just running over it as you do. I am sure you are talented but its sad to see music been played in this way. I am a lousy fiddle player myslef but thats my bit of advise whatever its worth.
I honestly do respect your opinion. I'm sorry that you feel I "murdered" two traditional Irish tunes and that I don't know how to play them "properly". I apologize for the offense.
Dont loose sleep Varian128. It you really want to play trad Irish music then buy a Michael Coleman cd and listen to a master. He is the father of trad fiddle playing with his Sligo style. A few years ago you could have visited Kate Kearneys pub in Manhatten on a Saturday night and see, speak, drink and play with one of his pupils Andy McGann. Those men were musicians that I wish I could play like but cannot. Perhaps you can!
No... I lost to a heavy metal band called the "Cigarette Muffin Band"... sadly. I'd like to have at it again, but this was the first, and probably last competition.
I've got some mp3's made... they're meant to go on the upcoming CD demo. Cooley's is among them. I'm working toward a better computer to record with, so soon I'll have something.
Really thanks, now I am thinking on a 4-string, as I dont think i need those 3 extra notes, but as I see you have a 5-string model, so what do you think would be best?
I use the fifth string a lot... It actually adds four notes, taking it to the viola range: C D E and F. The low C is great if your using an octaver (which I use A LOT) to make bass notes, plus it adds depth and a lot of punch in classical music. Most of my idols, though, play four strings, and five isn't for everyone. My acoustic has four and I enjoy it thoroughly, so it's up to you, but that's some food for thought.
Hey man is your violin from electric violin lutherie?? As im looking forward to buy an electric one, Im beetween lutherie or the vivo model from Ted Brewer, please answer
Well, I'm naturally going to stand for EVL, since mine is an EVL (and I think it's the best), but I think the Vivo looks nice. However, the Vivo has a factory built pickup, while the EVL comes with either Schatten or Barbera, both of whom are EXPERTS at pickups. Unless Ted Brewer is willing to build you a violin with a custom pickup, go for the EVL. Brewers are more showey, with lights and stuff.
Thanks for the compliment! It's an EVL: Electric Violin Lutherie. I've looked into Epoch as well, and they seem nice. I'm gonna stick with EVL, they're best!
yeah really liked your rendition. I love the looping. Are you a fan of Ed Alleyne-Johnson. The guy is truly amazing. We saw him many years ago with New Model Army in London.
Me and my wife loved it. Its so beautiful.. and you made it on-time, which makes it more beautiful yet. Do you have some website to listen to your music?
Greetings from Chile.. where celtic music is very appreciated (indeed there are some bands here that use to play celtic music)
There's always some amount of joy when you watch someone do something they love. You can always tell if they love it, and if they love it, they are usually very good at it. You are awesome!
I really enjoyed this. Fiddling isn't the big deal some people make of it. It's . . . fiddling.
A person with talent is always welcome to advance the tradition. They'd have loved you back in the 18th century even if they didn't have a clue how you did it.
Yep, that's just Cooley's... and KOTF comes in in the middle, I play part A and B twice through each, then theres a short interlude where I play the main part of KOTF... it's real short, and I didn't do it very well that time... earlier today I hit it perfectly... I'm thinking about updating Cooley's with my new version, longer and different ending... anyway, that's what that is...
Hello, Just a question, how much did you pay for the violin and what strings do you prefer. I play aswell :D and I use the Domnaint ones and I'm not happy with the sound of the strings and I don't know what to choose from. Btw Keep the videos coming!
the violin was about $1,200, and I prefer D'Addario Helicore string. I've used Dominants, but they're too sluggish to me. On my acoustic I splurge and use Evah Pirazzi's. Now that's a nice string.
great! one of my favorites. However can you get rid of that artifact/spike in the recording at about 1:38? It really prevents me from turning it up and enjoying it when that loud sound just about blows my speakers out.
I think I've discovered a local studio that will record my music, and hopefully I can eventually get to that place and get some CD's done. I expect that when I do release a CD, I will send out a notice to my subscribers and friends on YouTube. So, it's becoming more and more imminent.
That was bloody alrite.. well done!

There's always some amount of joy when you watch someone do something they love. You can always tell if they love it, and if they love it, they are usually very good at it. You are awesome!

how long have you been playing violin for, Varian128? and have you only stuck to the school music system or did you have private classes as a child?

Nice one.

I really enjoyed this. Fiddling isn't the big deal some people make of it. It's . . . fiddling.
A person with talent is always welcome to advance the tradition. They'd have loved you back in the 18th century even if they didn't have a clue how you did it.

p.s the helicore one steel or Aluminium?
javabart 3 years ago
I think I go with the aluminum, at least I did this time. I've tried both, and they both work just fine.

Kool, also thats the cooley's reel just played fast am I right?. I don't get where the king of the fairies come in.
javabart 3 years ago
Yep, that's just Cooley's... and KOTF comes in in the middle, I play part A and B twice through each, then theres a short interlude where I play the main part of KOTF... it's real short, and I didn't do it very well that time... earlier today I hit it perfectly... I'm thinking about updating Cooley's with my new version, longer and different ending... anyway, that's what that is...

Hello, Just a question, how much did you pay for the violin and what strings do you prefer. I play aswell :D and I use the Domnaint ones and I'm not happy with the sound of the strings and I don't know what to choose from. Btw Keep the videos coming!
javabart 3 years ago
the violin was about $1,200, and I prefer D'Addario Helicore string. I've used Dominants, but they're too sluggish to me. On my acoustic I splurge and use Evah Pirazzi's. Now that's a nice string.

great! one of my favorites. However can you get rid of that artifact/spike in the recording at about 1:38? It really prevents me from turning it up and enjoying it when that loud sound just about blows my speakers out.
mpa342 3 years ago
Yeah, I don't know why that's in there... I don't know how to get rid of it... and you know, it startles me every time too. :D
Varian128 3 years ago
wow, loved it. I really loved it. Make a CD! I would buy it!

WOW !...When does the CD come out, no kidding
cmillay142 3 years ago
I think I've discovered a local studio that will record my music, and hopefully I can eventually get to that place and get some CD's done. I expect that when I do release a CD, I will send out a notice to my subscribers and friends on YouTube. So, it's becoming more and more imminent.
