  • Nice one, Steve.

  • KILLER!

  • WhooHoo! Gogo! Haahaa mis u.

  • Hello, I really love your arrangement! That's the best Cooley's reel I've ever heard :). Do you have a mp3 version of that with a better sound quality you could send me?

  • GREAT work

  • HI, I love the way you put a modern twist on traditional tunes. I have been playing the fiddle for a couple of years, and I am gradually learing more irish tunes. chaisegilbert, I am having lessons from a classical violin teacher, and it helps no end with my technique, particularly the use of the bow, which can then be adapted to any type of music., Find a good violin teacher and you wil progress much quicker.

  • Awsome! :) i play mandolin and guitar. Ive tried to learn Violin and i want to play so bad but I just cant get 'using the bow' down. Any tips for me? Id greatly apprectiate it :) Thanks!

  • I just love you for this.

  • Great playing Steve :)

  • @themadfiddler

    Thanks! :D

  • keep going, and good bless your music and violin!

  • Passion is everything: Cool-ey's Reel!

  • cool!!!

  • I am truly impressed. I play celtic music on violin too. excellent job.

  • dude.. that was so cool

  • That is amazing, I've never seen this pedal used on anything other than a guitar. Great use of it, great job. Crap this just made my day. Thank you good sir!

  • wow ur really goooddd!!!

    Michel

  • The tradition lives through guys like you making more out of it - nicely done, sir!

  • I would love to see this in higher quality. Please record it again! I love it!

  • Nice work.

  • Woooow!!Bravo!!!!

  • Impressionante!

  • this is freaking AMAZING!!!!!!!!! do you give lessons!?!

  • Fantastic. But your should be worried. Doesn't the looping feature, where you end up playing with yourself, not make you go blind?

  • Liked it!

  • Very excellent

  • class very good

  • ohh nice song :D

  • Thats really cool!!! What equipment do you use for the loopings?

  • @8Wolff8

Hi, thanks for the compliment! When I made this video I was using a Line 6 DL4 for the loops. After that I move on to a Line 6 M13, and just this week started using a Roland AC 33.

  • That was amazing!

  • Está genial!!

  • How much was your fiddle? OH! and what brand is it?

  • @DarkEvilPoet

Hi there, the fiddle was made by EVL (Electric Violin Lutherie) and it cost me about 1,200 at the time. It might be less, because at the time mine was quite custom. Their line has expanded a lot since then!

  • @DarkEvilPoet brige makes an electric violin like this its about $1,200

  • How much was your fiddle?

  • AMASING!!!! XD

  • Dude, this arrangement surprised me...

You took the best from Traditional reel set and King of Fairies, then assembled both in a single amazing tune.

The "metal" solo was outstanding also...my most sincere congratulations!

  • This is amazing. I wish I had an ounce of your skill!!! Thank you so much for sharing your awesomeness with the world. :D Lá Fhéile Pádraig!

  • Awesome fiddling! Normally I'm very proud of my piano skills, but when I see your talent, it makes me feel small. Violin is the queen of instruments for sure.

  • traditional or not, this is MIND BLOWING! your use of electonix, is amazing, truly showing your mastery!!! OMG!!!!

  • I just started playing the violin in April of '09, and am playing songs I love already. I'm not ready for public yet, but I am enjoying what I am doing. I'm also teaching myself the Soprano Sax, another instument noone seems to think you can learn on your own. With the violin I got interested when I took my youngest daughter to a youth orchestra class. She used a rental, and ya, I learned the basics just watching her class. I bought a cheap violin on ebay, and went to town. Varian, SO HOT!

  • I love Irish music and want to play the violin, but I read that its probably one of the hardest insturments to teach yourself, and that its not advised. :( I tought myself the tin whistle, Irish flute, and have played guitar half my life (nine years)...is it possible to "pick up" the violin? Amazingly awesome playing!

  • Yes, it is one of the hardest instruments to learn, especially teach yourself. It's an instrument that, at least, requires guidance to learn the basic maneuvers and technique. I think that it might be possible to teach ones self to play the violin, but I think it'd be a long and hard road. The tin whistle, flute and guitar are instruments of a completely different type. They'll help in learning the violin, but no much imho.

I'm glad to hear that you like the music! Thanks for the compliments!

  • @Varian128 I have a friend who taught herself the violin and she is actually one of the best fiddle players I have heard. Her name is Hannah and she is in a band called the Dyer Cummings. Youtube them, they do some great folk stuff!

  • @FrantikFilms The violin involves using the bow, which is a very techical thing to do... as far as the teaching yourself to finger music and songs, you can, but learning the stuff with the bow is very difficult to teach yourself... and I am talking from experience

  • bleeping BRAVO!

  • crazy cool. Make an hundred year old tune yours and yours alone. Tres bien!

  • Killer!

  • Hey Varian, you inspire me to learn to play the violin. Ik have on old one from my grandma. I made it playable again. do you have this version of cooleys reel on tablature so i have some stuff to work on? and is your cd out yet?

  • I'm glad to hear that we have another violinist in he making!!!

I actually don't have any tablature for you to look at, but I'm quite sure that you could do a google image search of "Cooley's Reel" or "Coolie's Reel" and you'd find something.

As far as the CD, I'm working on releasing one of the songs for a full listen, and I'm making final cuts for all the songs. I still don't have artwork, so maybe I'll pull something together for myself. We'll see, but I'll keep you posted!!!

    Thanks!

  • Awesome rendition of this trying to find tabs for guitar if anyone can help me thanks

  • But is he The King of the Fairies ?

  • Awesome playing, improv and making this song your own.

  • Killer dude! passed you along to the Loopers list, excellent work.

  • Hey,

    What's the "Loopers list"?

    I appreciate the feedback!!! :D

  • Cooleys is one of my fav tunes. luv ur interpretation and arrangement of it.

  • DUDE!!!...blew my mind man... any chance you could shoot me a link of a website with the company u got the violin from?

  • wow, your really good :)

i've been playing violin since i was about 6-7 ish

  • Loser. Get a fiddle. LOL.

  • lol... it just so happens that I have one, and play it often.

  • MARRY ME

  • the whole thing was great but my fav part was 2:23-3:16...that was wicked man, keep it up!

  • me enamoré de el!!....OMG!! i love you!! xD

  • THat is tiiight..........how did you record multiple times as you play? neat....

  • It's called a "looper" or "phrase looper". You hit a button, and it records what you play, then hit another button and it will 'loop' what you just played. Then you can overdub, stop, start, slow it to half speed or play the loop in reverse. It's a handy tool! I'm glad you liked it!

  • sweet..... that is awesome! In garage band right? Ah.. I don't know how to use it :( I have a mac and garage band but all i know how to do is click record and sing or play and click stop lol :(

Yes! You play very nice keep it up ! :)

  • What a master here! I'm more than amazed! Gratuláció!!! Great!

  • Whenever your cd is finished I'd like to buy a copy. I've seen this video a lot of times and yet I still get impressed everytime. Keep on playing - I love it!

  • You are the master of this instrument xDD The sound quality isn't so good, but in rocks the shit out of me xDDD

  • This is excellent...finally the acid-rock version of Cooley's Reel! Thank you!

I am a big fan of the Electric Violin. Don't mind about the high notes...the distortion was cool!

  • king yeeeh king look like maystro very nise woooooooooooooow yeeehaa yeeee haaa

  • you r so cool

  • this is amazing! too bad the sound quality isn't so hot. do you have a cd? is it available yet? where to get it?

  • Thanks! Yeah, the sound quality isn't good. I have a CD in the works, it's pretty much completely recorded, but I'm waiting for my brother to finish the album artwork. It'll be available soon, when it is, I'll send out a message and maybe make a video with directions on how to get it. Things will be all worked out soon, I hope.

Plus, this song is on the CD, and it's a good recording... better audio.

  • That was brilliant, great stuff! ;)

  • YEAH MAN!!!

    You´re a real fairy king!

    PAN would love you!

  • Wanna join my band?

You just have to move to Sweden, give me 5 000 dollars in SEK and in cash, and worship Satan. Then your in;)

  • Very funny... :)

  • That was S.I.C.K!!!! Best video of 09!!!!

  • This song is in every sense traditional. Think about it, what made the Celts so unique was the different way they did everything. This man simply expressed his own feelings in the songs. How is that not traditional to the culture?

  • Awesome!

  • Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Wanna join a band?!

  • Actually, lately I've sort of fallen away from the mystique of looping and have been looking to join a band... you know someone that needs a fiddler/

  • I honestly do respect your opinion. I'm sorry that you feel I "murdered" two traditional Irish tunes and that I don't know how to play them "properly". I apologize for the offense.

  • Dont loose sleep Varian128. It you really want to play trad Irish music then buy a Michael Coleman cd and listen to a master. He is the father of trad fiddle playing with his Sligo style. A few years ago you could have visited Kate Kearneys pub in Manhatten on a Saturday night and see, speak, drink and play with one of his pupils Andy McGann. Those men were musicians that I wish I could play like but cannot. Perhaps you can!

  • All I can say....

    YOU ROCK!

  • that is so freaking cool i don't even know what to say

  • man, you're awesome!!

  • if the audio was better this would be one of the best versions of this ive seen. great composition and effects

  • buddy, did you win the competition with this?

  • No... I lost to a heavy metal band called the "Cigarette Muffin Band"... sadly. I'd like to have at it again, but this was the first, and probably last competition.

  • This is pure awesomeness !

  • That was soo awesome. You should try playing on Americas got talent. In all honesty, i think that you could win! Best of luck

  • You Genius!!!

  • Thats awesome.

  • very very nice!!

  • I want to be on you.

  • Woah... really nice !

  • i love this lads! I tink its just so delightful! Great craic!

  • awesome. Any chance there is a version in better quality? mp3 or something?

  • I've got some mp3's made... they're meant to go on the upcoming CD demo. Cooley's is among them. I'm working toward a better computer to record with, so soon I'll have something.

  • Okay, cool! Keep us updated! ;) subscribing and waiting!

  • thats cool

    tx man for sharing

  • Really thanks, now I am thinking on a 4-string, as I dont think i need those 3 extra notes, but as I see you have a 5-string model, so what do you think would be best?

  • I use the fifth string a lot... It actually adds four notes, taking it to the viola range: C D E and F. The low C is great if your using an octaver (which I use A LOT) to make bass notes, plus it adds depth and a lot of punch in classical music. Most of my idols, though, play four strings, and five isn't for everyone. My acoustic has four and I enjoy it thoroughly, so it's up to you, but that's some food for thought.

  • Hey man is your violin from electric violin lutherie?? As im looking forward to buy an electric one, Im beetween lutherie or the vivo model from Ted Brewer, please answer

  • Well, I'm naturally going to stand for EVL, since mine is an EVL (and I think it's the best), but I think the Vivo looks nice. However, the Vivo has a factory built pickup, while the EVL comes with either Schatten or Barbera, both of whom are EXPERTS at pickups. Unless Ted Brewer is willing to build you a violin with a custom pickup, go for the EVL. Brewers are more showey, with lights and stuff.

  • yeah very nice, whats that amp you use?

  • This was recorded with a Roland Microcube, but my main amp is a Prime KB30... it's no longer available... sadly

  • hahaha

look at his face while he's playing

  • Yeah, his face is pretty funny, huh?

I'm just kidding, I know I make funny faces, but it's involuntary! Anyway, makes for a good show.

  • The EVIL electric violin is what it looked like at first. good job dude. I like both of those songs.

  • just for a second i thought you wrote EVIL violin ^.-

great playing by the way... kinda puts 'more' into it than most other tunes i've heard ^^

  • awesome violin, is it an Epoch? u are so good

  • Thanks for the compliment! It's an EVL: Electric Violin Lutherie. I've looked into Epoch as well, and they seem nice. I'm gonna stick with EVL, they're best!

  • you are amazing!!!!

  • q wena volá loco!!! saludos desde chile y felicitaciones

  • electric violins!!!

  • yeah really liked your rendition. I love the looping. Are you a fan of Ed Alleyne-Johnson. The guy is truly amazing. We saw him many years ago with New Model Army in London.

  • Ed Alleyne-Johnson is amazing. I love listening to him play!

  • Me and my wife loved it. Its so beautiful.. and you made it on-time, which makes it more beautiful yet. Do you have some website to listen to your music?

Greetings from Chile.. where celtic music is very appreciated (indeed there are some bands here that use to play celtic music)

  • Hey Man that's cool, it looks and sounds so fun.

  • Amazing! Realy Amazing!

  • If you're not doing open mic nights, do some!!! This is perfect

  • Genius!

  • Wow... That was amazing

  • Great work. Thanks for sharing it.

  • steve vai of the fiddle!

  • Wicked man, you've got a great talent there!

  • my balls are truely tickled!

  • My God, this is amazing XD

  • That gave me goose bumps

    amazing!

  • THIS IS FRIGGEN AMAZING!!!

  • Brilliant!

  • freakin awesome dude

  • BLOODY AMAZING!

  • I think 'badass' sums this up.

  • cool, i like the idea of using a looper, i think im gonna have to get me one of those!!!

  • There's always some amount of joy when you watch someone do something they love. You can always tell if they love it, and if they love it, they are usually very good at it. You are awesome!

  • Wow! Very cool.

  • 5 To you Buddy! Good work

  • Wow! that was pretty cool man. :-)!

  • gorgeously played mate,,couldnt be better to start the day with an irish music like this one

    cheers

    ahmad

  • how long have you been playing violin for, Varian128? and have you only stuck to the school music system or did you have private classes as a child?

  • wow :D.. I like it :D

  • Nice one.

  • I really enjoyed this. Fiddling isn't the big deal some people make of it. It's . . . fiddling.

A person with talent is always welcome to advance the tradition. They'd have loved you back in the 18th century even if they didn't have a clue how you did it.

  • wow awesome!

Looper is the musicians best friend/jam mate

  • nice ty

  • Oh crap... Wish I could play like you! (: I have much to learn...

  • really really really good, but as you said, just tad blunt due to the camera.

  • Amazing!!!!

  • Subscribing to your videos...Awesome! You are a great musician! :-)

  • awesome version, loved it

  • p.s the helicore one steel or Aluminium?

  • I think I go with the aluminum, at least I did this time. I've tried both, and they both work just fine.

  • Kool, also thats the cooley's reel just played fast am I right?. I don't get where the king of the fairies come in.

  • Yep, that's just Cooley's... and KOTF comes in in the middle, I play part A and B twice through each, then theres a short interlude where I play the main part of KOTF... it's real short, and I didn't do it very well that time... earlier today I hit it perfectly... I'm thinking about updating Cooley's with my new version, longer and different ending... anyway, that's what that is...

  • Hello, Just a question, how much did you pay for the violin and what strings do you prefer. I play aswell :D and I use the Domnaint ones and I'm not happy with the sound of the strings and I don't know what to choose from. Btw Keep the videos coming!

  • the violin was about $1,200, and I prefer D'Addario Helicore string. I've used Dominants, but they're too sluggish to me. On my acoustic I splurge and use Evah Pirazzi's. Now that's a nice string.

  • great! one of my favorites. However can you get rid of that artifact/spike in the recording at about 1:38? It really prevents me from turning it up and enjoying it when that loud sound just about blows my speakers out.

  • Yeah, I don't know why that's in there... I don't know how to get rid of it... and you know, it startles me every time too. :D

  • wow, loved it. I really loved it. Make a CD! I would buy it!

  • I love you. o.o

I want whatever it is you're using to do the effects because that is freakin' awesome. Now to get an electric violin. >.>

  • I'm glad you liked it! :)

  • WOOT FOR MY BEST FRIEND IRL! awesome steve. keep it up

  • I hit reply this time... ;)

Thanks a lot! And I will keep it up till the day I die...

  • Awesome

  • Though I'm more a fan of classical violin music, this is wonderful! I too am looking forward to a cd:D Keep it up!

  • WOW !...When does the CD come out, no kidding

  • I think I've discovered a local studio that will record my music, and hopefully I can eventually get to that place and get some CD's done. I expect that when I do release a CD, I will send out a notice to my subscribers and friends on YouTube. So, it's becoming more and more imminent.

  • Sooooooo goooooooooooooood...!! Fav'd!!
