I saw them open up for REM on the Green tour. It was the last "official" date on the tour in Macon, GA. Only time I got to see them but I was third row and have been a fan every since.
I saw the post about The Feelies... best guitar band ever!!
Pylon is one of those bands that I wish I had seen during their lean, hungry early days. I feel that way about a lot of bands. I simply don't want to see them after a certain point, it sort of ruins their perfect time in my mind. r.e.m, is another (anything before Life's Rich Pageant). I stayed in Athens for a week in 1987, just exploring the town. I still have the hand drawn map of downtown made for me by Ort.
Great band. Saw them at Hurrah's back when...a crazy time. Hurrah,s I think, started the MTV trend. While the bands played, you followed them in the TVs hanging from the ceilings. If they kept those tapes complete, they are sitting on a treasure of great music: The Feelies, The P.Furs, Polyrock, and so many more.
@graciaraul Damn if you don't know how to drop names, hahaha! Every band you've mentioned was influential to me back in the day. I never heard of Hurrah's before. Where was it and when was it open? I am thinking it was in Athens, but could it have been Atlanta or even NYC?
I got to see their last show at Maxwell's before they broke up in '83. Vanessa was very friendly and cool. I was excited to see they reformed and then of course Randall Bewley died. No one sounded like these guys!
@jehouse Oh I know, and was hoping to see them again. I have corresponded with Vanessa a few times through her MySpace page. I was shocked when Randy died!
I love this song! I used to dance in a "go-go bar" (remember this was the 80's and that is whay they were called, not erotic dancing) and we could bring in our own ;music and I always brought in this to dance to--people used to ask wow, what is that song! Cheers
@ariamne1 What a coincidence. I used to spend all my paychecks at "go-go bars" in the 80's. Maybe I tucked a bill or two into your garter? hahaha! Love to talk to you about your experiences. I wish I had met you, all they played at such establishments in the 80's was Michael Jackson, Slayer, etc, when it wasn't a country and western tune.
@Circumpunk - its a possiblity if you were in the Philly area tucking those bills into g strings! Actually, laws were strict then and no pasties or "strings" going up the bottom were permitted if the place sold liquor. Most places were like that you described, but this one place let us bring in our own music and play it. Me and a few other girls were in the philly punk scene and bands like Pylon were a nice compromise! Would love to tell you some great stories from the era
@ariamne1 Sounds like a much more classy establishment than the ones I used to frequent in Birmingham, Al. Now all that is illegal here too, pasties required though they still wear butt floss. hahahah Haven't been to one of those places in years. Regale me with your tales of the old days my love!
@TheRoseanne58 This band started out with REM in Athens, Georgia (USA) on the club scene in the 1979-1983 era. Athens is a college town and these people (Pylon were atr students who traded pencils for instruments and microphones..thank God they did or we would have been without thier creations. Your are welcome..
today's musical climate makes me realize that someone must construct additional pylons
