  • The Easy to be Hard Soloist

    Cheyrl Barnes

  • That is the most patient little kid I've ever met. I know too many kids who would want to run off to the playground while their mother is singing about their sorrows.

  • Oh, hell! What happened next? You included 2 mins before, why not 1 min after the song?! Thx 4the up ~

  • ah, this breaks my heart. such a touchy scene/song.

  • wonderful.

  • Oh, and Lafayette, Jr. is adorable, I just want to hug him till I start cryin' Ya dirty hippies!

  • I forgot how much I love this movie! This has to be the best scene of them all and this song and her voice just sends chill sup and down my spine! <3

  • This woman is the hero of the entire movie. She perfectly sums up how I feel about the whole 60s "counter-culture" movement.

  • @clemdane

    Indeed, agreed... dirty hippies...

  • My Friend sang this song..and when ever I hear it ..I get all chocked up!!

  • IIRC, she was a housekeeper at the hotel where the musical director was working and she was singing in the background, and the director asked her to audition and sing this song. She got the role easily.

  • the small black boy is f°°°°ing cute!!!!

i love this song, so beautiful :D

  • 5:03 - lil guy doesn't get the situation :)

  • Cheryl Barnes is Phenomenal!

  • Mrs lafayette needs to shoot her worthless man

  • 13 heartless people

  • May Father come on! Apu gyere vissza! Kérlek!

  • Good

  • This packed theaters in DC Dupont Circle at release. The surround sound on this song was the best sound for the best perfrormance I have ever seen on screen. It literally drained everyone in the theater but there were still spontaneous cheers at it's end, sometimes earlier. This song cuts glass.

  • I know a better version : /watch?v=2ZHRc8tcoTU

    great cover :)

  • LOL, please pay attention to the woman in the bench, she appears and disappears at will... pretty fcking funny. I do agree by the way, that this is one of the best vocal performance in the history of cinema .

  • @vereda61 lol guess she couldn't be there for all the days of shooting. or she got fired. lol

  • Not just freakin' talented, but a genuinely beautiful woman. No plastic surgery, Botox, or anything. And she's even got all her clothes on. Sighhh, I miss those days.

  • I don't know why she didn't want to continue acting and singing with such natural talent.

  • Chills. My favorite song from this movie.

  • How about the injustice done to the little boy who has just been deserted by his biological father. Hopefully he will get a real father.

BTW I never saw the movie or play. I thought it was just cashing in on the whole Woodstock/Nam thing.

  • @TheGranule The little boy is NOT deserted by his father. He has a real father. ... Watch the movie.

  • Supposedly she knocked this out in one take----At the end of the movie, shouldn't the gravestone say Claude Hooper Bukowski instead of George Berger since they traded places and all.

  • I had an opportunity to be in a stage production of Hair. Was one of the most memorable experiences in my life. I have since bought the DVD and revisit it regularly with people in my life. This song has always stuck in my mind and I catch myself singing it at certain moments.

  • Amazing song. Amazing voice. Check out the woman sitting on the bench in the long shots. First shes there, then not there, then.....there again. Made me chuckle.....

  • It is a pretty amazing song. It helps the musical show both sides of the movement, not just glorify it. Sure, there's peace and love for the world, but taking care of the rest of the world can equal NOT taking care of your own little corner (at least, when you've gone to the extreme like these kids have). Gotta love the depth, here.

  • I think I'm a little bit older than most off you, I had the LP, there were no CD's....

I went a dozen times to see the movie...No Video too....

Now I have the Movie on DVD, and I still cry at the end!!!!

This is a good movie to see there is no difference between people....

    No colour...religion....sexuality...and HAIR!!!

And most off all...WE DON'T NEED WAR!!!!

  • What a woman, what a voice! Certainly the highlight of the movie, this song and its interpretation goes deep into my heart. It really plucks my heartstrings like not many other songs.

  • Great song!

  • what can you say, real class

  • I love this song because it's so true. How can people be so cruel and unfeeling towards people they personally know, when they claim that they want justice and righteousness for society? If you can't get your own life in order, shut your fuckin' face. Real acts of charity and kindness towards individuals we actually know is so much more important than our political policy and will be a true step towards the wider social justice we all yearn for. Peace and love, to *everybody*.

  • I read that when this part came up in the screening (for reviewers, industry types) they gave this a standing ovation. So cool. My fave part.

  • What a voice-her pain was just so heart breaking. What an actress.

  • I haven't seen this movie in a while, but I think that this might be the most important song in the musical. Kind of reminds me of how the intellectuals of today can content themselves with the fact that they "care about social injustice," but they are still cold and cruel. Apathy is more evil than ignorance. This song is powerful because it is always relevant.

  • Fantástico momento do filme "Hair"!!!! É um blue maravilhoso como todo o filme!

  • That's beautiful

  • Her only acting role. She wasn't even a professional when she was chosen for the role.

  • How can people be so hard. Hmmmm Think about it, be good to eachother.

  • I absolutely love the soulful version of this song... she sings it with so much heart, so feeling. I know I feel what she is saying... and I Love It!

  • Well the book and lyrics were written by James Rado and Gerome Raghi.

Galt MacDermot wrote the actual music.

    (:

  • How could he not love a woman like that the way she deserves?! Shit, _I_ love her!!

  • Christoddur and Drystyx, I agree with both of you. This performance brings tears to my eyes every time.

  • She looks like Sidney from En Vogue

  • @markiss1nonly I think she looks kind of like Aretha Franklin. :)

  • Her voice is amazing in this song. She pulls at every little emotion.

  • Great song and a killer performance.

I always found this one of the most poignant moments in that movie. There were all kinds of people dropping out of life and joining the counter-culture for various political and personal reasons, both selfish and respectable, but this was the one moment when the story focused on how dropping out affected the people they were abandoning in the process.

  • You know there are cases, when you have to say out loud obscene words ... well this is a case like that. WTF ?! That's incredible!

  • PAINING and Beautiful song!!

  • Three Dog Night did this song the best,

but this woman has a beautiful voice.

    Gives me tears every time.

  • 2:19 that´s the cutest little boy EVER!!!

  • I can watch this clip time and time over, this is the best quality posting I've seen, many thanks.

An interesting aside, regarding continuity, watch the users of the park bench, they are there then gone then back again and see the woman in the brown coat walking towards shot, then we then see a gentleman, finally the woman again, perhaps they were all on something in the cutting room, I can't see any reason not to have put these shots in a sensible order. It doesn't distract my enjoyment.

  • I wish I was half as strong as she. She doesn’t cry for herself while I´m crying just watching her.

On the other side she says „You know I'm hung up on you.“ I wouldn´t want to stay with a man who was able to scream such things, push me etc. My brain may forgive a rudeness, but my heart and body may be never „full of love“ again. Maybe I am stupid, but I am afraid I can’t change it.

  • Always loved this song, but she performed it memorably. The little boy, with tears, staring silently after his father is a heart-breaker moment. Thank you!

  • Love that song

  • what a voice!

  • This original "Hair" musical song is so full of soul and feeling. This talented singer/player really nailed it.

  • @agape4tube She & the song are great. However the arrangement if "over-trilled" vocally. The movie Fame came out that year too.

  • This is the GREATEST EVER character entrance in film history. Awesome.

  • shot on a beautifuly cool day in washington sq. park!

  • 1) How did she not even get an Oscar nomination for this - hell, she should have WON!!!! This is the single greatest musical vocal performance in the history of cinema!!!

    2) What the HELL happened to Cheryl Barnes. This, then several years later she won Star Search, then she disappeared. She could have been bigger than Whitney Houston!!!!

  • Jag vill dela denna vackra sång till min bror som dog nov 2009. I want to chear this song with my brother who died nov 2009.

  • Show me someone on "idol" who can nail this song, and then there will be a true winner.

  • That Lil guy is ADORABLE!

  • 1:27 . that's when the tears can't be held back any longer

  • 05:20 wow!!!!!! perfect high TUNE, just TALENT

  • What a REMARKABLE performance! Wow! Stunning!

  • I have loved this for years and I still get goose bumps everytime. Wow what a feeling.

Don't be cruel and heatless people. Peace Imij

  • @rvhawkeye your an idiot

  • I am still stunned after 30 years<3<3<3

  • Her name is Cheryl Barnes.

  • easy?

too hard for me: i had to take my leave of those who engage in LIES

  • @bettiebangs Actually, Three Dog Night covered this song which is originally from the musical.

  • @bettiebangs This is the original version. 3 Dog Night made it a commercial hit.

  • This is before them.

  • This Music is part of my life and this great

interpretation score until today, my life

    Music .... excellent!

  • the incomparable Cheryl Barnes. i could listen to her sing all day.

  • great voice .. j'adore !

  • She is AMAZING

  • social injustice....PLEASE GIVE ME A DAMN BREAK! hippies bullshit

  • Layfayette Jr. is soooooo cute!! : )

  • She is amazing. Great musical and movie. She is not singing while she is looking at the camera... she pretent to sing... it's a studio recording.

  • @evilunixuser1 You'll love it. Its a great story.

  • Can ou imagine how difficult it would be to just stand there and look at a camera and sing with such emotion and depth. Absolutely amazing.

  • she kills that song- in the good way

  • Thanks for posting this, amazing song with a amazing voice......

  • lordbooty you took the words from my mouth

  • Pretty good!

  • Omygosh I have to sing this O-o'

  • Lyrics by James Rado & Gerome Ragni

    music by Galt MacDermot

  • Stumbled on these HAIR excerpts...Hope to see the whole film, looks like a very entertaining movie.

  • great song! does anybody know who´s the composer?

  • James Rado and Gerome Ragni wrote the whole show.

  • @kaya528 The composer is actually Galt MacDermot, James Rado and Gerome Ragni wrote the lyrics.

  • @kaya528 And Galt MacDermott

  • @alcacerquibir I do know that "Three Dog Night" made it popular in '70?

  • Amazing song...

  • The story I heard was that Cheryl Barnes recorded this on the first take - and performed this on film - perfect on the first take.

  • Yes, this is true - she was really fenomenal even she was JUST A COMMON HAIRDRESSER withou any music education.

  • @rymicka She sang in church - they got a pretty good musical education in church choirs. See Little Richard's "Didn't It Rain" on youtube

  • Absolute chills! Every time. Never fails. One of the best directed scenes in any musical. Cheryl Barnes, you are underrated. Golden pipes.

  • The story I heard - was that Cheyl Barnes recorded the song - first take- and performed this in the film - perfect on the first take as well.

  • This woman can definitely sing. I love this song. The stage version is different, but this scene is touching and definitely makes a statement about what it must have been like to have responsibilities and then just walk away.

  • This woman could really teach some of these American Idol contestants a thing or two. This woman should have been a star. One of the best musical scenes ever.

  • Kippenvel!! Elke keer weer!!

  • I like the film version of this musical more now than I did 30 years ago. This is a masterful scene, clashing the stereotypical controlling Black male ego against the "peace and love" vibe he tries to maintain with his friends. He is shamed, she calls him on his shit, and his new friends are left not knowing who he is.

  • holy shit. so good.

  • @LiteraryWriter...I TOTALLY AGREE!! i love her singing and pride so much

  • @LiteraryWriter i couldn't agree more twith what you say about this woman.she is amazing in everyway.i've seen this film hundreds of times but always failed to find out what she is called.can you shed any light on who she is for me please.thanks.

  • @LiteraryWriter Absolutely beautifully expressed!

  • @LiteraryWriter The Diamond??? Sounds like she NEEDS someone!!!

  • @sweetredredwine yea, her diamond needs a setting to hold her up,, she's so proud, today's black women would have beat the shit out of the white chick and then gone after the dude. lmao. regardless, she's a amazing singer,

  • @LiteraryWriter i know what u mean, but if u listen to the song, she is tellin him she needs him, not that proud. lOL I would have told him to shit in his hat. that does not take away the fact that she is a amazing performer

  • what a voice!! incredible... wonderful...

  • tout simplement magnifique!!!

  • Caissie Levy is currently singing this song in the Broadway revival of "Hair", and she NAILS IT!

  • @har9020 Totally agree! I saw it a couple months ago. Caissie is amazing. Thought it is a completely different context and executed in a much different way.

  • She really does do a phenominal job of it! I was blown away when I heard it.

  • The only thing I will say about this scene is that if this your wifes(?) reaction to you possibly impregnating someone else...you really shouldn't yell at her...so few people I know react this well...

  • this is one of my fav movies in the world

  • 2:30

  • I love how this movie portrays both sides of the hippie movement, the good and the bad. And this scene is perfect. Fantastic performance, I can barely believe her voice!

  • Must approve with all my hands!

  • igen, yes, ja, da...its that i always talk about-thats why i love this movie and saw more then 20 times and never got bored :-) and yes, i love all the characters, but C B 's voice is fantastic

  • im all wet on my face and deep deep deeply touched everytime i c this part and song!!!!!

  • Beautiful!

  • The best ever. What a performance.

  • per me il brano più bello di tutto l'album!

che voce ! era il "79.

  • I realize that in movies they almost always lypsinch the songs but still, just standing there perfectly still and showing such emotion is amazing.

  • Cheryl Barnes is good, but I vastly prefer Sharon Redd's understated version

  • Pure, unadulterated talent - no flash, just vocals that shiver the spine every time I hear this song. 5/5 stars.

  • makes me cry every time..

  • It took ONE take to film this...Classic!

  • Comment removed

  • @stylishsid

every time i see that scene i also start crying, it is by far the most important and moving scene i have ever scene in any movie, she is amazing, i just say it on direct tv . i have the same reaction for over 30 years. best movie of all time. period

  • @stylishsid

You're not the only only one... :)

  • beautiful saxophone in this song!!

  • I was a teenager when the original Three Dog Night version came out. That sounded like nothing compared to this woman. Whe I first saw this movie, hearing this song was like being hit with a bolt of lightning. I never get tired of it. And she does it without chewing the scenery - she just stand there & lets it rip. Amazing, incredible voice & performance.

  • What beautiful song!

  • what a beautiful song sung well and a sad scene for both women and the little boy i heard this song last night in church and i agree with annasala many for get there own family but charity should begin at home..

  • It breaks my heart when the little boy starts to cry because he doesn't understand.

  • the band Golden Smog does a great cover of this song.

  • Cheryl come back to us.

  • i guess this version of the song works, but i prefer how it is in the stage version with shelia singing it.

  • i can relate to this scene so well..

how is it that especially those who say they care about others forget about their own family???

a friend of mine just told me I should not fall in love with "metaphysical men" any more lol

beautiful scene - love the singing

  • Cheryl Barnes is great. This scene, this song and the way she sings it gets to me every time. Without even saying a word, the little boy is a class act too.

  • what an awful dad! :(

  • man, I was born too late...I loved that whole time!

  • One of my all time favorite movies!! seen it at least 20 times!

    this song is amazing!

  • amazing...that after all these years.....i still can watch this..over and over again...Cheryl Barnes...is wonderful....stunning performance....and yes...my favourite song from Hair......

  • My favourite song from Hair!

  • Try this version by 3 Dog Night

    /watch?v=kVUoO--DsG4

  • Try the version of this song by 3 Dog Night

  • I thought that the movie had all of the best versions of the songs from Hair.

And that is after having over 10 years of numerous artists doing covers.

  • Could the boy get any cuter - is that possible? Adorable - and fantastic song and vocalist.

  • dear god how is it possable to sing like that im stuned and amazed 2 thums up
