oooo also im also really excited about Astonishing tales but i hate how they put in that MojoWorld, even though its funny, it takes the seriouslness out of the other stories.
Well 4 a $1,maybe you're right, but i have 2 tell u...l was put off way back when,Jose opened 2 the midway point of PaxRomana and revealed two pages of TEXT(eh)
Myself, l don't want 2 pick up a 'graphic' novel and feel like l'm reading WAR&PEACE!
l purchased the beautifully illustrated Frankenstein, drawn by Wrightson, but l could barely get past four pages of text.
ln what is suppose 2 be a sequential artform, l just don't get it.
Mike Carey didn't come up with that trick of lots of text from a "book" in a comic. There was a brilliant book called "Thieves and Kings" from the mid-nineties from I Box publishing, I can't emphasize how good a book that was but because it was self published not many people know about it. I definitely recommend tracking down back issues or the trades.
The Unwritten reminded me a lot of Thieves and Kings or The books of Magic and was a feast of a book where so many books are just a little snack
aw man, you're REALLY missing out. i honestly felt the same way about the first trade..and was still even unsure for the second, but by the third, you can see that that epic is building. and if the fourth book doesn't sell you, then that's when you should stop.
Honestly, if a series doesn't sell me by the first trade, it's not worth my time. I understand that with first volumes creative teams are often coming into their own and big series like that almost always get better as they progress, but I've read so many first volumes that *did* do a great job of pulling me in and that even count among the best individual volumes that I've read (Sandman, Astro City, Transmetropolitan) that "Oh, it gets better in a few volumes!" doesn't really work for me.
love sandman and tranmetro and i deem them to be classics of graphic novels. fables also gets built into an epic like those book. but i can understand. oh well. yer loss my man.
If Fables doesn't start being as good as those books until volume 4, then it's nowhere NEAR as good as those books. Good books don't take 2-3 years to start being good.
New Avengers is in it's 5th fucking year and that book has never been good. Not even close. At least Fables got there. I'll take more books like Fables any day of the week.
Well sure, Jose, but just because Fables is better than a shitty book doesn't excuse its lukewarm start. But I have to defend this same basic argument constantly whenever I tell people I only read the first paragraph of a novel before I decide if I'm going to keep reading it or not. There's just too many things for me to read to bother with stuff that starts weakly.
ya but i didn't say the 2nd and 3rd book weren't any good, it's just that you come to appreciate them more later as they are set-up to a greater tapestry. you may not dig them as much as yer reading them, but...ah whatever.
fables will always stay in my (and thousands of people's) top trades of all time list. do what you please.
Oh fuck, you've got me. If thousands of people think it's great, I take back everything I said and am out the door to my LCS RIGHT NOW to pick up every trade they have! Hell, maybe I'll buy TWO OF EACH!
Thanks for helping me correct what could have been a GRIEVOUS MISTAKE.
Okay, maybe that was a bit unecesarily caustic, but I kind of take offense at the implication that there must be something wrong with me if I can't on board with a book that everyone else likes. I thought that was kind of the whole point of these videos and boards.
never said there was anything wrong with you. i just REALLY and TRULY enjoy the fables saga and thought i would share my opinion. that is all. it's a free country dude.
and IMO, fables is amongst classic graphic novel literature. that's the only point i was trying to get across.
yeah true, for me to keep a comic it has to be good as a comic BY ITSELF- even if there is a good character piece or story explanation - the comic has to stand up on its own.
Happy to hear you guys liked it. Like I said on the other video, I liked it but didn't *love* it.. it just didn't really grab me for some reason, but it was definitely very well done. I liked that it was a complete story and was amazed at how much was actually there for $1.00. I've read $15.00 trades that took me less time to read than this thing.
I'm a huge Vertigo fan, and this pricing thing is just one of the many things I love them for. I make a habit of picking up any new book from them.

I also need to read Fables I have been hearing good stuff about that.

I thought the first Fables trade was decent but not great, and haven't felt particularly motivated to read anything past that.

The unwritten seems like watchmen a bit, where it has those comic strips and also has a sort of Book feel to it with just words.
My thoughts I am buying it ASAP, Vertigo is one company I love.
