haha i can actually understand the words. Bernard Sumner has a "unique" voice that makes some of the lyrics somewhat difficult to understand. Both versions are great in different ways but it is hard to match the exuberance of the original.

Reminds me of Ricke Lee Jones except a little higher. Has style, groove the blues, the sunny days as well. Nice balance of texture and feelings. Makes me feel like I think I might feel if I were in Paris on a rainy after noon. Missing my love and having a love to miss will make me feel warm and sunny.

There's been about 200 acoustic guitar renditions of this song - all of which have exactly the same arrangement. The only two that are worth anything are the 1989 version by Devine and Statton and the 1992 version by Aussie band Even As We Speak. None of the others are much cop.

@sleepysson I understand why you wouldn't like her (those are her worst covers, believe me). But Nouvelle Vague's got come pretty great covers of other songs, like Too Drunk To Fuck and A Forest. In a Manner of Speaking is perhaps, their best one. I don't see anything really pretentious about Nouvelle Vague, it's just a new twist on singing alternative songs. :)
