bakshi's animation begs for detourning like this. his movies are just appropriations of better artists' (crumb, bode, etc.), then he makes their "static" (though infinitely more lively) art into animations. but they don't mean anything, and become better with the right music. the krautrock band, german oak, takes these musical ideas into even darker corners of a faceless nazi soldier's unconscious mind as the war accelerated until germany collapsed in disgrace. drowsy demons being poked awake.

Someone asked if there is more than one version of this song. This is the version from 'Wolf City' (1972). There is a different version from 'The best of - 1969-74'. 'evoking swirling gusts of icy snow and the emergence of an ancient Frankenstein monstor from some Transylvanian cave as the... voice of a demented Hitler shrieks garbled nonsense into the wind' (Greg Shaw, Phonograph, 3/73)
Of course they couldn't, but the guy who remembered to cross the sound over the images sure deserves an Oscar. His sense of aesthetics equals his dark sense of humour. Congratulations! (Lina Baby Doll, was that you?)... and Hail AMON Düül 2 for all eternity!
female voice is renate. thats correct. male voice on otopia is meant to be rolf zacher hehe ...one ov thee blackest sheep amongst thee germen actors ;-))
Nepal is the land of warriors, german wants to place its general in land of warrior( conquer nepal) but fears that they will be defeated. nepal and german(west german) had a great relationship of friendship during 1980's
I Love this song, I remember that I first heard it in 1973 or something like that (I was 15 years old at the time) . Now I like to play the main riff on my guitar.
The translations offered above are all crap. Here's a better one: "A general was standing at my cradle, Said, 'He's a fine child; He'll be a man after my own heart: Maybe Governor of German Nepal.' I was born in the land of warriors*; Try very hard to be a hero, But the victories are a long time coming. Maybe the general was wrong." *This word sounds more like "Kriege" (wars) than "Krieger" (warriors) in the Wolf City version, but is "Krieger" in Utopia. Coughing etc. omitted.
I wonder why you asked in the first place. If you don't know German and if you don't read any slanderous commentary (which you seem not to have read at all), why assume that a song "on" Nepal might be anti-nepalese?
Why Nepal? That's exactly the point of the song:in fact, there is no connection between Germany and Nepal. But in the "schizoid" mind of a nationalist, his country should own everything everywhere, even Nepal, that lies thousands of miles away from Europe. The usage of Nepal is just symbolic, and the song stands as an excellent irony of this way of thinking.
schizoid is a mental illnes, is not a character flaw. It is an illness; just as diabetes, cancer and glandular fever are illnesses. A person suffering from a mental illness is not lazy for simply not "snapping out of it" or "cheering up", just as with any illness help and support is required to overcome mental illness.
People like you they do that the mental patients could not join our society. Those that they cook people in the ovens are not mental patients, are healthy demons.
You 've started an argument about mental illness, which is irrelevant to the subject of the song meaning, without even noticing that, in my first comment, I used the word "schizoid" with inverted

Thank you for posting the translation! I've been wondering about it ever since I first heard this circa 1971. I speak halfway-decent German, but misheard some of the words, for example "Governour" as "wer war nur" (who was just) and "Krieger" (warrior)as "Friede" (peace). Your way makes much more sense.
a general sat on my cradle said: "he is a beuatiful child he is going to be a man, as i love him, governor, maybe, in deutsch nepal!" i was born in the land of warriors, ah..warriors i´ll take great pains to be a hero but the victory-ah is to be waited, ah- waited! maybe the general was whrong general, general, general!
I thought the animation came from a 70's cartoon version of "Lord of the rings". A brave venture that just about got 1/3 of the way through. Unlike contemporaries Hawkwind, AD, despite line up changes, are the same excellent proggers as always. I saw them in London last year.
I don't know. Maybe. But artistic signature of R. Bakshi is reckognizible. Rotoscoping use animation over existing movie shot, by projection of frame on special table. So artist on rotoscopy (animator) have artistic freedom to change or adapt frame (and movie) depending of his inspiration and make maybe new piece of art.

Deutsch Nepal is on Wolf City. And also... it's on Utopia, which is now listed as an Amon Duul album, though originally it wasn't. Wolf City is a great album. Utopia is a bit jazzy.

no, this one is the original version from the lp wolf city.
perhaps you heard the alternate from the lp utopia first, which had a different lineup and was made, when the band broke the second from many else times later.
Nope, neither of those. It's from a feature animation called "Wizards" which Ralph Bakshi wrote as well as animated.I synched clips from it more or less to this song by Amon Duul which seem to fit.
no, they only colonized the gdr ;-) this fictive story goes like this : a general stood beneath my cradle. says : it is a beautiful child he becomes a man, how i love him i was born in the land of the warriors maybe gouvernor in german nepal i was born in the land of warriors endeavour myself to be a hero but the victories keep waiting for maybe the general was wrong
Thanks to Kalliyah for translating this rant. It used to haunt me back about 73. That throat clearing particularly unsettling. Though knowing what that guy is saying does decrease the forboding. The Nazi clips have rarely been seen to better effect.
I thought it was 'Lord of the Rings' at first and then I saw the Evil wizard from the other Banshki movie called 'Wizards'. I'm not sure if it's that same movie, though it is intresting to see it in colour. The version I have is for Canadian television would be in colour on a Canadian telelvision, but I'm in Australia.
I am quite fond of Bakshi's version of "The Lord of the Rings". I saw it some years back, and i thought it was surprisingly successful at capturing the overall atmosphere of the book. Too bad its so undderated, tho.
bakshi's animation begs for detourning like this. his movies are just appropriations of better artists' (crumb, bode, etc.), then he makes their "static" (though infinitely more lively) art into animations. but they don't mean anything, and become better with the right music. the krautrock band, german oak, takes these musical ideas into even darker corners of a faceless nazi soldier's unconscious mind as the war accelerated until germany collapsed in disgrace. drowsy demons being poked awake.

Actually, I used the original recording from the album Wolf City to make this video.I don't know of any other recordings of this song in existence.
actron 5 years ago
no, this one is the original version from the lp wolf city.
perhaps you heard the alternate from the lp utopia first, which had a different lineup and was made, when the band broke the second from many else times later.

Sorry...it IS Fire and Ice...my bad!
Syntox 5 years ago
Nope, neither of those. It's from a feature animation called "Wizards" which Ralph Bakshi wrote as well as animated.I synched clips from it more or less to this song by Amon Duul which seem to fit.

sorry wrong again its Wizards, and i love the movie, i have it on dvd

I'm pretty sure this clip is Lord of the Rings...and I have also heard a version of this song where the voice is more high pitched!
Syntox 5 years ago
It's from the move called "Wizards" which was animated by Ralph Bakshi, the same guy who did the LotR cartoon

great, now that we have the lyrics in English, lets have them in German!

Thanks to Kalliyah for translating this rant. It used to haunt me back about 73. That throat clearing particularly unsettling. Though knowing what that guy is saying does decrease the forboding. The Nazi clips have rarely been seen to better effect.

A general stood at my cradle
And he said, "he´s a beautiful child
He´ll become a man, how i love him
Governor perhaps, of German - Nepal
I was born in the land of warriors
Eh- warriors
i must try to be a hero
But the victories -eh- let them wait, eh - wait
perhaps he was wrong
The general -general- general

I thought it was 'Lord of the Rings' at first and then I saw the Evil wizard from the other Banshki movie called 'Wizards'. I'm not sure if it's that same movie, though it is intresting to see it in colour. The version I have is for Canadian television would be in colour on a Canadian telelvision, but I'm in Australia.

I am quite fond of Bakshi's version of "The Lord of the Rings". I saw it some years back, and i thought it was surprisingly successful at capturing the overall atmosphere of the book. Too bad its so undderated, tho.

I've always loved Bakshi's animation, and this was a real treat for me
Marcman2020 5 years ago
Bakshi's best rotoscoped work is definetly Fire and Ice! In callaboration with Frank Frazetta, they were a formidable duo.

Freaking sweet animation!
Rotorvision (I believe that's the style) is a lost art.
FlippytheSkinhead 5 years ago
True, its just not the same when done digitally.Ralph Bakshi mastered it, to me anyway.

when i took classical animation in 1992 we called it rotoscoping... bakshi was the master!!! anyone have a copy of wizards by chance?
