I was wondering, how do you come up with the picking patterns? I've never had lessons but I've been playing guitar for quite a while now and I'm learning fast. I'm working on fingerstyle guitar but I don't really know where to begin. I mean I'm working on songs like Classical Gas, just because I think it's great practice since it's got a lot of speed and stuff.. But I don't know which "chords?" to use with fingerstyle guitar.. hope you can help in some way. Btw you're awesome!

@sailxonxmusic the brief synopsis of how I made this arrangement: 1) figure out the key. I figured out it was in Cm. this is not an easy key to play in, so I put the capo on the 3rd fret so its in the key of Am. 2) figure out the chords. just using my ear and some trial and error. Am, C, and F 3) learn the melody. 4) play the root of each in time with the melody 5) add thumbslap on beats 2 and 4 when possible

@guitar2adam and finally 6) make it sound cool. i added 7ths to the chords a lot to make them more open sounding. so Am7, CMaj7, FMaj7. add more bass notes to fill in the groove. through in some harmonic slaps. etc.

@azazaz333 some basic knowledge of theory would help...but if you listen to the chords the first one of the three is sort of the "home" of the key because it is stable and other chords resolve to it. so by trial and error I went up and down the neck of the 6th string and by listening found the root to be C. give it a shot yourself listening to the actual song and you'll see what I mean. Cm is hard because the chords would be Cm, D-flat minor, A-flat minor. Those are all bar chords.

@96Katal Yes I do. I first heard this song last night, and arranged it in about an hour. Recorded it this morning. This one's pretty easy because the entire song is only 3 chords! (Am, C, and F)
