Here's to the lady, Anita! Many more tributes and studies are due our lady, Anita. Damn close to the first lady of song. Anita. And the angels will sing.
A phenomenal singer..great tone and phrasing. Unfortunately, like Billie Holiday, she too had her demons, mainly drinking and heroin addiction. But she lived a long life..1919-2006.
@chetnet Ccould be true (I hear Chris Connor's tone there), but where would any musician be without antecedents? Ray Charles tried to be Nat King Cole before he "became" Ray, Elvis was hooked on Dean Martin - who wanted to be Harry Mills. Nancy Wilson cops her entire style from Little Jimmy Scott. To suggest that any singer grows up in a vacuum without influences is simply not how the real world works. Anita is indeed remarkable, but - who were her influences? I don't know her history well.
This audio track is not from Newport, where she had a small combo, but from the 1958 studio album "Anita O'Day Sings the Winners." The big band is led by Russ Garcia.

One of the all-time greats, who was copied by June Christy, Chris Connor, and now Diana Krall, but none come close to her hipness!!!
