@daffydoug I have heard few mistakes of his as well. Funny thing is, when you watch a video of him playing live, you will sometimes see him wince just a little like he hit a bad note. When you go back and listen, it sounds perfect, but he heard or felt something that was not to his liking even though you'd never know it by listening. He was a perfectionist, and well deservedly so. He could afford to be!
All of Chet's music is beatiful. Glad my Dad raised me on Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Ray Charles, and Elvis, otherwise I might be ignorant to this amazing music.
I've logged 71 years on the planet. I have heard the name Chet Atkins many times and always associated him strictly with country music. Just dicovered youTube, yes , there is hope for us old farts..my father told me years ago he hoped I could recognize a wonderful thing when I encountered it...I have just encountered Chet Atkins, many years too late and now stand in awe of his grace and pure beautiful talent. Dad also said "Too soon we get old, too late we get smart" amen. Heaven has great music
@oldstuffhaus Comments like that make my day, make me feel very good inside, and make it worth my time sharing Chet's music with the world.
I have over 400 of these vids, and I think if you'll give them a listen, you'll see that Chet's guitar could capture ANY kind of musical mood. They always said he could play "Everything from Bach to Rock with every stop in between." (And yes, a little country, too!)
Wow. I am only 22 and I am also in awe of Chet. I feel good.
What is it about his playing? Its way more than just striking notes. It must be something about his attitude that I can hear that is so memorizing. Absolute control...and honesty? Confidence?
Always listen to Dad, Stuffy. Mine turned me on to Chet was he would appear on Johnny Cash's show on ABC around 1970. It didn't quite sink in until I was 18 in '78. I saw Chet, Earl Klugh and George Benson put on a guitar clinic on Chet & Friends, a PBS special. Insane-AND you can catch some of it on here if you look.
@oldstuffhaus Your words were amazing for me. You are right... My dad who is a guitarist and taught me to play since i was a young boy used to reference Chet Atkins. I never really knew Chet's GIANT guitar imagination and his true talent until i looked him up on Youtube. Very GOOD!!
Well I'm only 32 years on this planet. I never heard of him until youtube got popular a couple of years ago. Guess what, I feel the same. Might I suggest you search for his version of 'The Entertainer" and Mr. Bojangles. They are beautiful.
@oldstuffhaus I'm only a couple of years behind you but had the good fortune to find Chet (and to recognize his versatility) in my teens. I;ve played (at) the guitar for years but never really seriously until the last few. (Yeah, really late.) Couple of years ago I found Chet's protege Tommy Emmanuel. Look him up on YouTube or elsewhere and I think you'll find Chet's legacy alive and well. And he's a really nice guy. Met him & took one of his seminars. But, Chet's still the greatest ever!
@oldstuffhaus I had the good fortune to find Chet in the 50's and recognized his immense versatility even then. A couple of years ago I found one of his proteges - Tommy Emmanuel. Ave Maria, Gratia plena, Dominus tecum, Benedicta tu in mulieribus, Et benedictus fructris ventris tui, Jesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora pro nobis peccatoribus, Nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae, Amen.
I'm not surprised you said that because Back in the forties when Chet was first on the radio, he was accused of being two people when it was just him. They always said "That Chet guy is pretty good, but who's 'that playing along with him?

Yeah, I was kinda hoping it was a solo, but enjoyed the arrangement nonetheless (well, maybe a little less). He produces one the cleanest sounds of any acoustic player ever.
y everyone has to be so political ?i bet Chet never had in mind tat he's "proud to be American"when he's playing Ave Maria.i tink at some point he might forgot he's an American coz music is music n music is for all n fuk those who said Chet doesnt noe to shred.if u don like Chet js fuck off elsewhere.y care2view Chet's stuff? u like shredin go search4shreddin idiot.. i luv COB those stuffs too bt Chet is Chet .don ever try to make comparison when it comes to music ..unless u dono wat music is ..
thanks .... everywhere just people who say "our music" is 'better' an al that stuff... please listen to "your" musik and let the other ones listeh to "their" musik.
musik is something to enjoy and not something made to fights about whos the best! (sry 4 bad englich im austrian ^^)
Obviously you made a mistake by clicking on this link.
The music performed by Chet in the guitar is almost 200 years old. Millions and millions of people were move up to tears by the Schubert Ave Maria. In this arrangement for guitar, Chet succeeded in getting so much emotion by heavy soft slowness and his rope fingering.
A music for heaven and forever, not for hell !
But youre undoubtedly too young still to feel such emotions. May be in 20 years !
I was referring to the original poster of the text within my quotation; not Mr Guitar. It would seem as though you replied to myself - I was lambasting the moronic poster who questioned Chet's ability.
I am glad that I'm not the only person who fights the corner of fantastic music with such vigour!

If this is music, I'm the King of Siam. Man, this guy plays turtle slow. Quick search will uncover a hundred ROCK guitar players who could run circles around your beloved "Mr Frickin Guitar" any day of the week!
Where's the pyrotechnics? Where's the fire? Where is the true dexterity that ROCK players have in abundance, as this guy makes you want to just sleep with this poor version of elevator music.
It's supposed to make you cry right? OK Boohoo. Wah. BARF!!!
You're clearly a moron and I no longer wish to debate this with you.
I like Music, not bright light and fire.
Why don't you go put a Nickelback album on and fuck your sister? Again.
Anybody who has studied the guitar will realise Chet Atkin's influence on the development of modern technique.
I'm a fan of Rock music, because I appreciate all musical styles. Whereas you're probably sitting there, typing this in your oil-stained denim, occasionally glancing at your mother thinking "Mmmm..."
Chet always admitted that in every genre of music there were better pickers than himself.
BUT, nobody did as much diverse music over more time and as well as Mister Guitar. He loved to play and was kind enough to share his passion with us. Thanks, Chet!
The reason Chet said that is he was such a humble man. But every guitar player worth their salt have all given it up to Chet. but no arguement with you. I miss Chet alot. What a hero we lost in Chet.
I looked up "gänsehaut" in the internet "Free translator" and it said "Goose-Struck". So either you got a "bird-strike" from a flying goose, or perhaps you were so "touched" by this tune your body hairs stood up on end... a phenomenon we call: "Having Goosebumps". Thanks to daffydoug for posting all of these.
You apparently have no taste for good music and further more he is no idiot, and yes he can shred. Bet if you attempted this tune you would screw it up ass hole. Long live Chet !!
Actually on some of chets earlier recordings has has used sweep picking techniques(known as the chet super lick) way b4 ANY shred guitarist was born into the music business.
This is Chet atkins you're bumbling about. This man never did anything to deserve the F word said negitively in the same sentence as his name. no1 from GB can even touch Chet's playing. Go listen to your fag rock leave the greats to us who realy love music
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I was replying to a poster that put "Can't this idiot play with any speed? Can he shred?????" .... but then being a typical fat American fool you'd be too dim to see that.
And "no1 from GB could play like that ??" haha, again Mr typical fat American fool, your stupidity shines through. America had NOTHING to do with his playing.
No wonder the rest of the world hates you idiots.
Try reading and understanding a post before you attack the poster...
well morrsmiths. you're absolutely right on two counts. It's a shame that so many Americans put their foot in it by opening their mouths before engaging their brain (a common problem, that's why the rest of the world thinks of them as they do, but that plum Bush doesn't help). I understood what you meant perfectly well (from the UK) and I'm sure many Americans did; shortynshoni is just a thick, illiterate twat - even if, like we, he appreciates Chet's music. Cheers, Les
What's even more amazing is so many europeans thinking so much of themselves. You dumbasses haven't even figured out how to bathe on a regular schedule and long ago gave away any semblance of freedom. So, while you sit in your friggin' pathetic little "flat" stinking up the world around you just remember we don't think a whole hell of a lot more of you than you us. Pathetic fuck.
Talking of stinking up the world, perhaps you might take yourself back to your illustrious record in places like Vietnam. Your sort of American sure knows how to make the rest of the world stink. It pains me that I have American friends, and then cunts like you open their mouths and give the impression that all Americans are a waste of space, as you clearly are.You really are a sad fucker, who needs to get a life, instead of spewing crap.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Vietnam?
Are you referring to the same Vietnam that was screwed up by the problem child of Europe that is France?
The same country that America, no did not fix, but tried to help gain free elections?
The Vietnam that is located in an area that has been constantly screwed over by Europe for "trading purposes" ever since a few idiots figured out how to cross the Himilayas?
Are you perhaps from the same England that is notorious for arming the minority in an area and letting them do the fighting for the government?
Look at India, the Middle East, Africa, all of these areas have had minority groups armed by the British because Brits knew that if the little guy didn't do what they wanted them to, then they could just take away the guns and arm someone else, and let the minority get its ass kicked.
Even more so, yes, America did have and is currently having a hard time in Vietnam and the Middle East, respectively, but that's because it takes a hell of a lot more work and more people getting their hands dirty to clean up the mess then it does to make it.
It pissed me off to hear Tony Blair say, the day after Baghdad fell, that America took the city with help from British forces.
America was already knocking on the gates when British troops were sent.
At the time, Germany was the only country letting America use their airbases because Brits wanted nothing to do with the war, until they thought they could be wrong. Then France chipped in because they're England's little hand-licks.
So yes, thank you for the crappy, disorganized world we live in because England wanted to spread it's fingers.
well, I'm an American and I like Chets playing, but as far as no one from great britain being able to play like that? No...I'd say Julian Bream could smoke him.
I hear Jingoism and stupidity in all of you clowns. Drop it.
shortynshoni, You're right about Chet, of course, but why the homophobic reference? Live in the deep south, do you? You know, where they wear funny white suits, pointed hats and kill n****rs & gays. Shame on you for showing your prejudice in the same sentence as mentioning Chet - a genius AND a nice guy.
Can he shred??? Thats like asking if you are a dumbass with no taste in music. this version has so much heart but you would no nothing about that. Dont be so careless with your coments next time. you're talking about an american icon and alota ppl's hero including mine....punk
Michael Lucarelli's version is much better!

Did Chet ever record the 'other' Ave Maria, the one by Bach/Gounod? The version
of it by Karen Carpenter just brings me to tears every time I hear it. The Bach
'accompaniment' with the Gounod melody would have been a natural for Chet
Atkins' style.
I liked the Version 1 and Version 2, no matter what. Thanks.

In the meantime continue sleeping!

OK Boohoo. Wah. BARF!!!
This "music" is a freakin joke.
hardsell08 3 years ago
You're clearly a moron and I no longer wish to debate this with you.
I like Music, not bright light and fire.
Why don't you go put a Nickelback album on and fuck your sister? Again.
Anybody who has studied the guitar will realise Chet Atkin's influence on the development of modern technique.
I'm a fan of Rock music, because I appreciate all musical styles. Whereas you're probably sitting there, typing this in your oil-stained denim, occasionally glancing at your mother thinking "Mmmm..."
x00acoustic00x 3 years ago 2
Chet always admitted that in every genre of music there were better pickers than himself.
BUT, nobody did as much diverse music over more time and as well as Mister Guitar. He loved to play and was kind enough to share his passion with us. Thanks, Chet!
irsaysbuddy 3 years ago 2
The reason Chet said that is he was such a humble man. But every guitar player worth their salt have all given it up to Chet. but no arguement with you. I miss Chet alot. What a hero we lost in Chet.

great tune, chet!!!

What word is this"chore" you mean CORE as in hardcore?
cast390 3 years ago
I looked up "gänsehaut" in the internet "Free translator" and it said "Goose-Struck". So either you got a "bird-strike" from a flying goose, or perhaps you were so "touched" by this tune your body hairs stood up on end... a phenomenon we call: "Having Goosebumps". Thanks to daffydoug for posting all of these.

Actually on some of chets earlier recordings has has used sweep picking techniques(known as the chet super lick) way b4 ANY shred guitarist was born into the music business.
cast390 3 years ago 3
This is Chet atkins you're bumbling about. This man never did anything to deserve the F word said negitively in the same sentence as his name. no1 from GB can even touch Chet's playing. Go listen to your fag rock leave the greats to us who realy love music

Pathetic fuck.
trebor166 3 years ago
Talking of stinking up the world, perhaps you might take yourself back to your illustrious record in places like Vietnam. Your sort of American sure knows how to make the rest of the world stink. It pains me that I have American friends, and then cunts like you open their mouths and give the impression that all Americans are a waste of space, as you clearly are.You really are a sad fucker, who needs to get a life, instead of spewing crap.

Are you perhaps from England?

Are you perhaps from the same England that is notorious for arming the minority in an area and letting them do the fighting for the government?
Look at India, the Middle East, Africa, all of these areas have had minority groups armed by the British because Brits knew that if the little guy didn't do what they wanted them to, then they could just take away the guns and arm someone else, and let the minority get its ass kicked.
Ever hear of Sunnis and Shiites?

Do you know who backed the little guy?
Merry old England!
Had to send German mercenaries to fight the revolution in 1776 because, oh yes, England didn't want to use the money.
Why did they have such easy access to Germans?
George III was a Hanoverian.
Why was German George the first put on the throne to begin with?
The countrywide persecution of Catholics!
Yes, America has bad press for Vietnam and the Middle East, but that's because these are among the first highly reported conflicts.

"The sun never sets on the British Empire"
You know why they'll never be slaves?
Because they enslaved most everyone else.
enough ranting.

well, I'm an American and I like Chets playing, but as far as no one from great britain being able to play like that? No...I'd say Julian Bream could smoke him.
