  • I'm just wondering why the MLJO played Mintzer arrangements? They are great charts but don't they usually keep it "in-house" as far as the arrangements they play by members of the band and the lineage of Basie band - Thad/Mel band - VJO. Am I just missing the fact that Bob played in the Thad/Mel band?

  • @MarksSax After Thad left and Mel became the band's only leader, he began to add more charts from various arrangers, in order to take the band in a fresh direction.

While the band still played the charts that Thad wrote, Mel also incorporated charts written by other arrangers, including Mintzer and Bob Brookmeyer, into the book ~

  • Aaaaaaah!!! They are the hurricane!

  • Bruce Lee type stuff what a treat thanks

  • Mel Lewis Big Band - carrying on Thad's memory...Gotta love it

  • I love the line Joe pulls out at 2:57...The only way this would be cooler is if everyone in the band were wearing matching Member's Only jackets...

  • Wow...great stuff. Thanks for posting this.

  • This is from that live in montreux album in 1980. All of the charts were herbie tunes arr. by Bob Mintzer. He gave my high school the version of dolphin dance. It is pretty amazing. If anyone knows where I can get the cd of this or is willing to sell it I will buy. I have been looking for it for a long time!

  • It's 1980. And the band is:-

Trumpets: Earl Gardner; John Marshall; Sino Salmenen; Joe Mosello.

    French Horn: Stephanie Fauber

Trombones: John Mosca; Douglas Purviance; Earl McIntyre; Lee Robinson.

Saxophones: Dick Oatts; Steve Coleman; Gary Pribek; Richard Perry; Joe Lovano.

Piano: Jim McNeely. Bass: John Lockwood.

    Drums: Mel Lewis

    (Thanks again John)

    Bob

  • This can't be from '78, Joe didn't join the band until '80.

  • It's gotta' be from 80' - John Marshall and Gary Pribek were still with Buddy Rich.

  • Bob, this isn't 1973, it's either 1978 or 1980

  • Thanx - I'm tryin to get all my clips back up - and rushing it a bit!
