  • checkk out my bukowski poem i made into song "Friends Within the Darkness"

  • This is the best - Simple and elegant, gets to the point. There are too many people using this piece for really bad videos and music. Shameful!,m and what will happen when they realize their art is a failure? Will they become hateful? What an oxymoron.

  • @SkullKron bad by your standards?? this poem is about you...

  • 17 people are average people

  • Oh this stuff is easy man ,you just get yourself a thesaurus, throw down a few rhymes ,trick your public inta believing what it is that your selling (very important) & um ,oh yeah, i guess you gotta be a genius , yknow like chuck, otherwise,(another important point)

    Dont Try...

  • ...and than they will hate you...their finest art!

  • Like Hitler, Like Bush, Like Blair, Like Murdoch. Like Bruce Forsyth. The list is endless..........

  • beware the average man the average woman

beware their love, their love is average

    seeks average

    (just genius)

  • A real humanitarian.

  • Happy Birthday, Hank.

  • There's a part missing! Here you can hear him reciting the whole poem:

    /watch?v=SOU5WHnRtdw

  • @SybilleNord fuck off fag

  • great stuff

  • This man is fucking amazing

  • talent ? pas seulement ... Genial ? pas uniquement ... Divin ? absolument

  • Wow.....Thanks, Chuck.

  • Did he write this before 1979 and Apocalypse Now?

  • @rbtcurtis

    Lol

  • my favourite

  • There was an absolute genius in this man.

  • Wry, slick, honest, compelling, off-putting.... there is a joy in discrimination, benign and otherwise.

  • Thank you, Barack Obama!

  • his poems always contain too much truth, they almost hurt.

  • @UncaDollas they actually DO hurt...

  • impressive visualization of the need for Wisdom, but he slips up on one word: they will TRY to believe your love is incomplete. I don't know how rude it is, but its definitely wrong to crush people's hope completely.

  • You can always prove him wrong you know, not by negating the effects he left in his words, but by questioning what makes you survive. Buk found a way for him to survive, and I believe when he glanced at all those years back, the movie was worth seeing.

  • @araymviviana I will tell you honestly, he doesn't remember saying those words now. Any question of survival is a moot point. If he remembers anything, it is confusing "trying" with "Wisdom"

  • There is a certain level of genius in hatred.

  • booo to the thirteen ppl that just don't get it..buncha haters!!

  • I don't know how his bitter cynicism makes me feel better, but it does.

  • Perfect! Every word is true. Thanks..

  • holy crap

this guys words all made some sense to me

  • immortal bukowski.

  • In other words.....beware man. Isn't being human wonderful?

  • Ironic 'fact':

"Ask enough people to estimate something, and the average of all their guesses will get you surprisingly close to the right answer".

Nova science, see their vid: "Wisdom of the crowds".

Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881): "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

  • Yeh, I hate people who hate!

  • I spend all day thinking how remarkably disgusting the human condition is.

Then I get home, get drunk, and listen to Charles Bukowski's words.

    And everything is alright.

    All of it is right.

  • awesomely awesome. so true.

  • damn this is good

  • Absolutely brilliant. Perfect.

  • to hear his voice

    read those words

    is

a gift that will never get old

  • Wonderful, just W.O.N.D.ER.FU.L !!!! Charles Bukowski I love you !!

  • Oh, Bukowski. Thanks for teaching me a little more about the Truth.

  • @truedude86 His words are his weapon. Love is the strongest one of all.

  • @CarmenGreer79 It's not fucking love! that's what's wrong with all of us. love love love. love will heal us all. Love is often tried to be used in the same way as Bukowski's hate. beware their love, their love is average

seeks average. I think this all comes from a pre-mortality death of human beings. Once any of us decide that our lack of inner courage and strength should determine what we believe about the world, we lose. Love can be this substitute too. Love doesn't always make you stronger.

  • @jdubs6960 Love is based on personal interpretation. I'm sorry you seem to be lacking.

  • @CarmenGreer79 also read the full version and you'll understand what I was getting at fool.

  • This man is truly beautiful.

  • The average, the mediocre—these are the ones we need fear the most. Incogitant, hateful, and greedy, the true artist, the seeker of light, know their marks.

  • To anyone arguing that originality is dead, please notice that it is both intangible and an unrealistic concept. To truly be original you must be inspired by nothing. the best you as an artist, as a philosopher, as a writer, as a person can hope to do is stumble upon a way to make something, say something, be something that is slightly different from the majority, but a quest for originality in, let's say art, leads to a compilation of mindless tropes. No soul, meaning, or art to be found.

  • I think Bukowski would disagree with the statement: "It's the quiet ones you have to look out for."

  • @ImTestingSleeping haha no no. That's statement was said by someone who was getting ahead with a sharper genius of the crowd.

  • Buk understood the loneliness of an artist as well as anyone i've ever read

  • @vinoberg That's good, let's hope that you haven't read too many then.

  • Comment removed

  • @SISYPHUSECC111 i don't think it's about being "original" either but the original/individual/free aspect to being a creator/artist is how that artists puts their works together. it's about how you combine x+y+z. it's all about the formula and how YOU PUT IT TOGETHER. "The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it

But the way those atoms are put together." -Carl Sagan

  • After all it's about all of us including himself

  • "like a shining diamond"

deepest of all. so depressing to assume the truth!

  • only i find these quotes completely condescending?

i mean if you don't agree with him you automatically become one of those he talks about, but if you do agree with him, which is easy because its a simple language for simple people you just become another mindless follower who thinks hes "unique" and "special" like every other person... its a catch.

  • @Rdfa202 People who agree with him are stll the ones Bukowski tallks about. Wether YOU like him or not does not matter, he will still hate you. One more than the other. I think Bukowski hated everyone.

  • @VikTheBrik Well said.

  • @Rdfa202 Since we're on the subject of simplicity, here's a typically famous quote from a genius, "Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex... It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction." -Albert Einstein.

On to the unique. Solitude. He feels its the ability to hold something as your own and not judge it against the world, unique people don't do that, without the world to compare themselves to, they wouldn't be unique.

  • To thine own self be true or become a rat among the ruins.

  • i agree with this posting.

  • 9 people know this video is talking about them.

  • @cougarflounder Now there are 16. No doubt average American Christian. (obviously you are either not average, or not American, or not Christian. And I salute you!)

  • @cougarflounder more like 936 people pray this isn't about them.

  • @jum401 every other week or so this video needs you to validate it ..

  • I LIKE IT WHEN HE SAYS PURRFECT

  • i got many people angry with this poem before. and the ones i was directing it toward were the ones who got mad. and i didn't even specify who.

  • None of us are righteous, pure, holy, caring or brave and HE KNEW IT.

  • @debknows how can you say that? Think for yourself.

  • He spoke the truth. Absolutely. One of the best. ♥ Thank you for posting.,

  • I was just watching this! So true, isnt it?

  • Bukowski. That's what's up.

  • To me this poem is about religion and the influence it has on society. It's written most perfectly and it's amazing.

  • @righteousrat Then you are a face in a sea of people sir.

  • @jdubs6960 I like turtles.

  • RIP Charles.. You're truly an Inspiration to me.

  • Just watched an hour long interview with Tony Bliar promoting his new book the man who created the average man image. There is something very wrong. Now we have clones of him everywhere Clegg, Cameron.....Obama.Hollow, average men.Far worst than anything in Bukowski's days, poetry saves me and this tread of comments is hopeful, that theres a world free from money, money, money, hollow men.

  • This poem, along with ALL the others Bukowski wrote, are very influential. He was an extremely talented writer, without a doubt. He said things that i only think about. I really do adore Charles. We probably will never have the opportunity to have a poet of his sort.

  • this is one of buk's best poems. this is actually an abridged version, but its just as potent, if not more potent, than the longer version.

  • One of my favorite poems. I can relate to what he says, Excellent.

  • This poem says it all.

  • Holla!

  • I feel, (but this is only what I feel ) that it is my duty as a fan of Bukowski, and as a fan of those people who are aware enough to explore his work to direct you guys attention to two other poems by hank, one is roll the dice the other is born into this, born into this is were accurately predicts the future of the human race i wont say more, thank me later. love you guys.

  • Best one ive heard from him yet without a doubt

    tough motherfucker

  • beware the preachers, beware the knowers

  • @dihydroxyaceton Ironic?

  • @LogInAnders yeaaaah man, TEACH us about Hank, show us the error of our ways. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. ha

  • Fucking amazing. Right in the guts, ouch

  • Oh Hank. He was a genius indeed.

  • so beautiful

  • this piece is like a diamond. gaw!

I think it was maybe his masterpiece...okay..obviously an opinion...and maybe it's just more and more relevant as we sink into the stink of the age of individualism.

  • his best poem,,the greatest thing he ever wrote besides post office and ham on rye....

  • @ROBIBLOOM "beware those quick to praise, for they need praise in return"

It's like shopping at Urban Outfitters.

  • I love this poem... "not being able to love fully...they will believe your love incomplete.."

  • this is the one that got me with him. this and a thing he said about his feeling his chicken shit dad's blood in him when he was un just to women...not sure if he ever wrote than down or it was an interview...

I'm an artist, gettin' smothered by my family, and this was very important for me to hear. I didn't know of him growing up but it's amazing to see his influences still swayed me.

okay and then can we talk about in the movie, the one guy swears that he saw Bukowski actually change size?lol

  • wow..where did you get this>?

  • wow..where did you get this>?

  • Bukowski's hatred was perfect.

  • @eric144144

    At least he knew it.

  • You are missed.

  • This isnt poetry. It doesnt rhyme, its not about flowers made of icecream, or anthropomorphic animals that never take a shit. Its not poetry because it doesnt hide the bloody incisors of reality with an ear to ear tight-lipped fucking grin. What about all the well adjusted successful happy people reaping rich rewards and commanding respect for parlaying a winning hand into a mediocre game? We need to hear about them.

  • @zoobly3

    Right on.

  • @zoobly3 Your opinion is one of the most ignorant I've found on youtube, especially because you clearly position your opinion on a high throne. If you are willing to learn why you are wrong then message me and I will take a great amount of time to explain it to you. But from reading your comment I would guess that you don't want to learn anything.

  • @LogInAnders Given that you entirely missed the irony in my post, and the fact that i am addressing Bukowski's hatred for what he referred to as "rhymers," and that I ever so lovingly composed my response in the style of Mr. Bukowski, you apparently won't be teaching me anything, no matter how much time you devote to the endeavor. Also to be fair, I suspect that English isn't your first language which might explain the confusion; so if you want to talk Bukowski, send me a message. Peace.

  • @zoobly3 my friend, that comment made my whole day, even more than the poem did. I don't know if you've ever tried to get anything you've written published, but you seem to understand, as Hank did, that the more original a voice you are, the smaller your potential audience. even if you become successful, most of your fans will probably be pansy boys who wish they were you. can't tell you how many bukowski fans I know who don't have one hundredth of his attitude.

  • Describes the right wing Tea Baggers perfectly.

  • @vladdycat please give me an example of Hank's love of big government.

  • Yeah, Bukowskis poems like this were knives in the back of liars, of politics... and in the back of the whole fuckin society who believed in liars and politics.

  • This summarizes exactly why I am the way I am. His wording couldn't be more spot on. These are the reasons why the "outsiders" (people with great brains but lacking in political influence) shun common man and humanity, and shriek at the true realization of its existence.

  • This is true......every word of it......

  • Its funny how you find poetry when you need it, or at least I do.

  • It was always interesting to me that he chooses those examples of perfection; examples I would not even think of when faced with the word.

  • I don't know why but I've listened to this poem 10 times and it still sounds as good as the first time. The words flow so easily and they say the same things that are so true to reality.

  • FAVOURITE POEM EVER

  • I keep coming back to this and keep writing comments lol.. it is just so beautiful. I wish I had half the talent this man did.

  • You and me both.

  • i feel so lonely, i have to come back to this video every other week or so...

  • @jum401; Try listening Ben Harper. I've been diagnosed with clinical depression (big whoop) and i often turn to music to help me forget. but after a while you wont be able to forget, so you'll actually have to fix the problem. Ive had the same problem since pre school, and im just now fixing it...

  • @jum401 Agreed.

  • fucking great and fucking true!

  • can someone tell me in which book i can find this poem? looked through all my buk-books and i don't have it.

  • The Pleasures of the Damned. It's very inspirational for those of us who cannot buy art.

  • The Roominhouse Madrigals

  • who is this man with the perfect mind ???? i just heard this poem and...........WOW. i', speechless!

  • hahhah that man changed my whole life baby!!

  • how ?!??

  • if you're just getting turned on to bukowski now... you got a lot of catching up to do. go to it, baby

  • I always appreciate Bukowski after always finding average women.

  • Comment removed

  • :) yea...i know what ur talkin..

  • Tremendously well-observed stuff

  • God, I love this man

  • @willbscene God has nothing to do with it

  • A powerful poem on society.

  • Hey I am 42- years old Bukowski fan: Are there any lonely woman who loves poems of Charlie and beer

  • he was looking for harmony and perfect silence, what more can we ask for.

  • What a genius...simple as that...

  • The ORACLE has spoken.

  • Splendid!

  • Bukowski is truth which i enjoy. He is not correct in his ways, he is not pretty, he is not handsome. he is the rawness that we desire as we do not hold this any longer.

  • i hated bukowski upon exposure a little over a year ago. a friend of mine leant me Factotum the other day. the first few chapters into it, i can honestly say i have changed my opinion of bukowski.

  • What a perfect description of modern American Christians.

  • @mondoman561 And atheists, and agnostics. :/

  • @jdubs6960 Umm...no Skippy, wrong. Atheists and agnostics eschew religion, do not proselytize, nor do they attempt to legislate their particular version of morality. You don't hear about fundamentalist atheist murderers of abortion providers, or fundamentalist atheist terrorists flying planes into buildings. Nice try though...kind of in the same vein as scientifically illiterate Christians referring to scientific facts that conflict with their superstitions, such as evolution, a "religion".

  • that is so completely true. for someone interested in unbound discovery, and breaking free from the pack, and being on the outside looking in at the chaos of their minds hearts and lives....and not being able to lower myself to their level, or raise them to mine...this is completely poetically flawless and 100% true. I guess Bukowski was telling the truth when he said he was where it was at.

  • Unfortunately, that is true.

  • 100 % exactly the truth

    they are all around you

they can only destroy as they can not understand or appreciate anything like love ,art, reasoning.

  • fantastic

  • Comment removed

  • i wonder how many of previous posts have been written by precisely those people Bukowski wrote about...

  • @Forcroi 98% of them.

  • absolutely awesone.

  • My master Bukowski... best poet ever!

The tone of his voice is amazing.

  • fucking awesome

  • His best poem.

  • 100% agree. Does a german translation exist? I would like to read it although you can easibly understand this one.

  • Not me I'm happy go lucky motherfucker.

  • it's funny how a drunk ass Buk can speak to the human heart. don't try.

  • This poem makes me bow my head to the lowest point possible: it humbles me. Thanks for this eye-opening post!!!

  • Did they cut the middle part of this poem out of the video or did Bukowski omit it?

  • they cut it

  • I don't want to like Bukowski, but I always end up adoring him.
